What do you want to be when you grow up??

Am I the only one that nearly runs screaming in terror when L&D or NICU is mentioned? I've seen 3 births (haven't done L&D rotation yet). Thank you very much I'll pass.

I'll take ER/Critical Care. I don't mind missing body parts, copious amounts of blood or vomiting stool (just not on me).

Your career path keeps changing all the time.

When I first started out, I wanted to go into nursing administration. After finishing nursing, I tried different areas. I started to studied OR nursing, but hearing horror stories I decided to back out.

I have done community nursing, camp nursing, worked through agencies, and worked on a medicine floor.

I have recently decided to go into the ICU - ER is definitely not the place for me.

After the ICU, I haven't decided. Maybe I will end up in nursing administration. I like the idea of becoming a nurse clinician.

You can do so much in nursing.

I really don't think I am cut out for the ER, either!! I started out wanting to do peds, but now I am leaning towards OB, or even home health (despite the horror stories i've heard). I'll probably work in medsurg for a year or so after I get my license, then decide after I get a little experience (or "a few battlescars" as a nurse that I know says).

It is normal to not know exactly where you want to be or have any idea at all even. I have a few classmates who still don't have a clue and my classmates and I will be graduating in May.

The beauty of nursing is you have plenty of options and if one area does not make you happy then find another area.

Right now for me my interests like in OB and NICU. I am also interested in doing Pediatric home health including babies who have been discharged from the NICU but I will work in a hospital setting first of course.

I work in the ER and also on med/surg. I love ER! The thought of the challenge is wonderful! Never knowing what is going to happen next and having to make split second decisions is great. As an ER tech, I am actively involved in almost all aspects of the ER (except pushing meds), this includes traumas all the way to the wheezes and sneezes!

If they don't have any openings there, I will opt for the new CCU/CICU unit they will be opening the year that I graduate. Guess I just can't live without that adrenaline thing....even at my age!! :eek:

for now, it is still ed. we have only been on the med/surg floor , last semester, with mostly medical patients] and i know this is not what i want nor do i wish to work ob, oncology, nursey, etc.]

i must say today i did get a "kick" out of learning about reading ekgs!

After starting school this week, all I really want to do is pass microbiology. If I do that and make it to clinicals, I'd love to be a peds nurse :)

It's good to know that I'm not the only one who has these feelings, but the more I think about it, critical care is what I'm leaning for......I think the only thing that we're all sure of is where we don't want to be...............good luck to everyone this semester!:kiss

I have been a nurse for 9 years, I am 36 years old. No one told me I have to grow up!!! :) I want to be a retired traveler when I grow up!!!

Let's see... hopefully if everything goes well then I will be working in an ICU unit after graduating for a year then getting into a CRNA program somewhere.
