What do you use to transport your books?

I bought a rolling briefcase type of thing to bring my books back and forth to class. I did this mainly becasue I have 3 of my 4 classes on the same days (plus a lab) and there are 6 books I wil have to transport most days. I am 34 and did not want a back pack because it would be very heavy for my back. My 16 year old son says they are going to make fun of me for having a rolling briefcase. Will they? Not that it matters (I told him I am going to learn, not make friends) but I was just wondering if I will stick out.

A lot of students at my school have rolling backpacks, including myself. I finally gave in and bought one last semester because my back was killing me from carrying around all of those heavy books in a regular backpack. I have not had any of the other students make fun of me, if they do then o-well. My A&P instructor did however make fun of them in general and doesn't want us to bring them into her class. I'm going to anyway though, she will just have to get over it!!

Why wouldn't your A & P instructor want them in the class? That's stupid!

My thoughts exactly:angryfire She thinks that they take up to much room and that there is no need to bring all of your books with you to each class.

First of all, they are no larger than a regular backpack. Secondly, I am not making a trip to my car between classes. Like I said, she will just have to get over it.

She looks like a man more than she does a woman. I have to get over that. (I'm a make up artist so it drives me nuts) So I figure we are even.:p

Ok, cuz some of those rolling backpacks look like crates and take up A LOT of space! No one will laugh at you, however, first semester many of us ran out and got these huge backpacks we never used. First day teachers told us we DID NOT have to bring any of our books to class.:chuckle So, point is, make sure you ask your teachers. Sometimes you don't really even have to cart around those heavy books!!:p

My school rents out lockers to students for a small feel. Maybe you can look into that at your school?

In our nursing classes we are discouraged from bringing our books at all except once in a while when they tell us ahead of time to bring a certain book. I've seen people throughout the school with little rolling backpacks or even small suitcases!

I can't believe that you would listen to and consider your son's immature opinion! Rolling bookbag. I am an RN who is in a health information management program. We have classes in the same building with the nurses and dental hygienists. I'd have to say at least half of the students have some sort of wheeled transport because of all the books they have to lug around. We have to lug our medical coding books with us to every single class. Our backs would die if we had to carry them. Most of the instructors use rolling bookbags or briefcases with wheels as well! I'd tell my son that if I ever hear of him laughing or making fun of someone using something with wheels to haul their books around, he was going to be visiting the moon. Pow!

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

I use a regular backpack, since i'm part-time, i don't have as much to carry.

Some of the younger students (I'm 39) in my class made fun of me for bringing in my ...yes, my small suitcase on wheels filled with books. Guess what? The next day there were four others. Cool? Who cares?

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I used airport-style luggage (a bag on wheels).

I'm not considering his opinion. I bought the rolling briefcase. I said in my OP that I told him I was not there to make friends so I do not care what others think. I was just curious. I figured college would be full of those things.

Oh and by the way, he would NEVER make fun of somebody for ANYTHING because I raised him right. He has, however noticed other kids in high school making fun of those with rolling backpacks and that is why he said I would be made fun of.

Specializes in Telemetry & Obs.

I used to have the rolling backpack thingie, but found it was a LOT of trouble when I had to climb stairs, etc. Now I use a nice leather bag I found at TJMaxx that even has an umbrella storage section :p

I only have one nursing class this semester (did I mention it's my LAST?!:balloons: ) and most of the lecturers have powerpoint presentations with handouts so our book is optional for lecture. I read before lecture, listen during lecture taking notes as necessary, and read/highlight in the book *after* lecture. That way all I need for class is my notebook, highlighters, and pens.
