What do you think about Mount Sinai Beth Phillips for ABSN?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello Everyone!

I need your input.

I'm currently taking nursing pre-requisites at Queensborough Community College in NY, and am looking into the Mount Sinai Beth Phillips School of Nursing's Accelerated BSN program. (I have a BS in Graphic Design.)

My question is: Has anyone here on allnurses graduated from this program? I know it's very new, and I would like to hear what everyone has to say about their experience there. Tell me about how intense it was, how the 15 months is broken up, and whatever else you think I should know.

I am attracted to finishing my BSN in 15 months as opposed to taking two years at Queensborough for an ADN, but I'm also worried about the pricetag. Not as steep as NYU's Accelerated program, but still pretty up there compared to public college. Your input will help me decide if it's worth it.

Plan B might be finishing at Queensborough with an ADN, by some miracle landing a nursing job with only an Associate's, working for a couple of years, and then applying to one of Stony Brook's MSN programs (which you can apply to with just an ADN as long as you have a BS/BA in some other field, but might be tougher to get into because you need to hand in a Clinical Portfolio with your application).

***Some background on what I've been able to handle in the past: I have all A's and one B for my pre-requisites thus far, and a 3.6 gpa. At one point in my graphic design career, I took 21 credits in one semester, and did fine in all except one. I feel that because of this experience, I can probably handle a heavy load- but more like 18 credits, and not 21. All the while having one, and later two small children at home. Still nervous about what I can or can't handle in nursing school. Please advise. Thanks so much!!

Program literally has just begun accepting students, so don't see how anyone can have graduated yet.

Private programs in New York are always going to cost more than CUNY or SUNY, that is just how things roll. It also explains whey the latter two are bursting with applicants/pre-nursing students.

As for any program being "worth it" over another, that is something only you can decide.

Some have tired of waiting to get into Hunter-Bellevue and applied, got accepted, graduated and licensed in the two years or so they could have spent cooling their jets at Hunter "hoping" to get in (or not).

Phillips-Beth Israel School of Nursing as a very good reputation far as their ADN graduates go. Many have gone onto obtaining their BSN/post graduate degrees and are actively involved in the profession from many areas including education and clinical.

Wow, thank you so much for the quick response. You are absolutely right that the program is so new... for some reason I thought they might have had one or two graduating classes by now.

Queensborough has a partnership with Hunter College (as well as York College and the online BSN program that CUNY offers) where you can apply to finish your BSN during your first semester of nursing school at Queensborough. If accepted, you have a guaranteed seat waiting for you when you finish your ADN. It's pretty cool considering how tough it is to get into the program at Hunter directly, however, in my situation I feel as though a full four years is long when I have the opportunity to do it in less than two.

Thanks for sharing that article! I'm going to the Phillips-Beth Israel School of Nursing open house next week, and reading this has made me even more excited!

YW, best of luck!

There was some worry as to what would happen to PBSON when Mount Sinai purchased Continuum Partners (parent company of Beth-Israel hospital), but for now they seem to be on board with keeping the school open.

Talk began circulating in NYC at least a few years ago (pre-merger) that PBSON would be offering some sort of BSN program, and it looks as if they went with second degree instead of undergraduate. With nearly all major NYC hospitals/healthcare networks wanting the BSN for new grads if not all nurses, Beth Israel Hospital School of Nursing had some decisions to make. For instance don't think Beth Israel Hospital has promised or whatever jobs to that school of nursing's ADN graduates in years.

One good thing about MSPBSON is they still operate in many ways like the hospital diploma programs of old. The application process does include an interview portion which gives candidates a chance to shine, explain certain things, and so forth. Weight is also given to the required reference letters (two IIRC), again which helps.

Hi,

PBISON is one of the schools I will be applying to this summer for the 2018 season. There are few threads on AN about this school and I have read them all. To sum up, so far people have said only good things. From the top of my head, the school requires GPA, entrance exam as well as interviews. The process is very intimate just like the program itself. The school select, I believe, very few candidates which, I think is great. Small class size feels intimate and teacher to student ratios will play in student favor. Anyways, if you want to learn more about the school you can search it on AN. Also, go to the school's website to learn about tuition, scholarships, and course listings. If you wish to attend an open house, the school offers a few dates this coming semester. I have registered for one, I believe in the first week of February.

Thanks for the info! Yes it does seem to be a very intimate school, which I like because I feel that learning happens best for me when there is more of a connection in the classroom. I'm going to the Open House next Wednesday which should be fun– I'll let you all know how it goes!

Hey, thank you so much! Take as many notes as you can! Also, ask as many questions as you can. I do not know how you plan to pay for your tuition, but I heard the school gives some sort of a scholarship/grant. So, inquire about it! Enjoy!

Hi there! I am interested in applying to Phillips for the Fall 2018 and was wondering how you felt about the school so far (assuming you started there)? Also, any advice on where to take Math for Medications? And what kind of Ethics course did you take, was it specific to health professions or just a general course? Thank you!

Hey! I just submitted by application for Fall 2018.

I was also curious about the Math for Medications so I spoke to them and they said it wasn't actually a requirement, that you could just match up any math class that you've taken in the application form. I also just took a general Ethics course, but mainly because the Biomedical Ethics course was filled.

I would also love some input on the school overall if anyone is willing to share!

Thanks- Kat

I am also applying to PSON for summer 2018. I did my math for medications at BMCC and I also did an ethics class there as well.

Have you gotten an update on your application?

Have you gotten an update on your application?

No not yet! Have you? I recently had to fix my application because of a problem with a transcript so I'm not positive they have started going though it yet :/
