What bothers me is one section of society is forcing their religion privilege to take away choice from other parents and students. It's clearly homophobia in the guise of religion.
I think they understand that kids will be kids and they can't control what their kids read so they want to take away the choice for everyone. Professionally educated librarians that use the American Library Association recommendations and freedom of choice be damned. It's all about what they think is morally acceptable.
I've seen this before. When the world goes made and you can't discriminate or control much, go after the homosexuals because that's still socially acceptable because the Bible says so and the Bible much be forced as the law of the land.
I'm disappointed. I really thought millennial parents would be the generation that ended homophobia and raised their kids better, but I was naive.
I disagree. Although I cringe at Bible thumping everyone has a right to their beliefs.
Imo, LQBTQ books are perfectly fine and should be available to everyone but why do they need to be so explicitly sexual? If but for the sexual descriptions I would tell these parents that although they have a right to believe in what they wish, they can't use it to take away someone's choice.
Have to note they are asking for the book to be removed from the school library not removed from circulation. If people still want to read these book they find them online or at a library.
As LBBTQ people have a right to be who they are, other people have a right to believe what they want, providing that it doesn't cause harm to anyone else.
Unfortunately in order for everyone to be free, even bigots have the freedom to be bigots. As much as LGBTQ have the freedom to be LGBTQ. Let the bigots look bad it only makes them look dumb.

I haven't read the book but doubt it's sexually explicit and Mediaography. The description does deal with unpleasant topics like prostitution. But clearly a teenager could deal with that story line and or sexual topics and persons of different sexual prefrences.
I'm sorry if you're taking my quote as that I don't think they have a right to their religion, their opinion, or their bigotry. I'm too much of a libertarian and American for that. My objection is them forcing it on others and taking away choice.
Christians schools certainly can have their choice about books that focus on Jesus. But to expect a public school system to indoctrinate other people's children into their religion is what I object to.

Nicely articulated!

I don't believe religion should be pushed either. I don't think any personal choice should be pushed. I quotes some excerpts from one of the books somewhere. I think on this forum. I'll check and repost when I get the chance.
I didn't think you were saying they didn't have a right! Of course you wouldn't think that, you're Tweety and you are a nice person!! ❤

You don't believe there is a difference between these parents and nazis? Or just loosely associated by book burning? As your comment suggests?

As you can see, I was commenting upon the suggestion that books should be burned and whether or not burning books is sometimes OK.

Burning books is stupid.
However, parents burning books is no where near comparable to nazis burning books. My initial comment was in reference to your comment associating the two. Both are bad one is evil.

I didn't associate book burning with Nazis...but you may have.

What they don't like is they feel that the LGBT people are "forcing their lifestyle down our throats" and they'd rather the community be invisible. What the LBGT community is trying to do is come out of the closet and underground and be represented, that we are part of the human race, that we exist and demand equality.
What they are trying to do is force the Bible as the law of the land....that their Bible dictates that LGBT community can be discriminated against. Is demanding that we not be fired from a job based solely on sexual preference "shoving it down your throat" or is that just asking you do to the decent thing?
I was fired in the 80's for "not being manly enough" I.e. because I was gay. I remember when gay bars were raided simply because there were gay patrons there and they were harassed by the police.
Christian attitude gave rise to the acceptance of bullying of feminine boys that were different. Christian attitude lead to children being homeless, prostitutes and drug addicts (apparently the subject of that book). Why should teens and young adults be shielded from this reality. It's a way to break through and end the cycle of bigotry.
For some of us the way to ending such things is through representation. It's very important that the LBGT community not be erased from school libraries just because some Christians are uncomfortable with the idea of equality and lifestyles and gender identities that are different. It's not Mediaography when a boy kisses a boy.
End of rant.
Alabama man pleads guilty to bringing molotov cocktails, five loaded firearms to Capitol on Jan. 6
QuoteCoffman packed a cooler with Mason jars he filled with gasoline and melted plastic foam to produce a dangerous “napalm-like” explosion of sticky, flammable liquid, he admitted in a two-hour plea hearing in Washington.
In his red GMC Sierra truck, the Army veteran also brought a rifle, shotgun, two 9mm pistols and a .22-caliber pistol — all loaded — and carried two of the pistols with him as he walked, he admitted.
I wonder how, where and by whom was he radicalized.

When you said....
"Isn't that what not learning from historical lessons looks and sounds like?".
Were you not suggesting the historical lessons were nazi book burning"?
If not, I misinterpreted your comment and I apologize.
