What would you do?

Published

Hello everyone i have a tough decision i was wondering if i can get an input from others that might have been through this to.

The issue is the following:

1) I am a new grad. After countless applications handed in i decided to apply out of town for full time or at least 3 days a week but the issue is the job would be about 2 hours away hours away.

2) 1 day of training for about 30 residents and it would be pretty much call in

Would you make a try for this 2 hour driver + 8 hour shift + 2 hour back home drive just for experience

or should i wait it out and just keep applying locally?

Ooohhh, yuck. That's a lot of driving :( I know some people do commute for work, but that's not worth it for me. I have a family at home, and the gas and time it takes out of my life just isn't worth it. Good luck!!

Any chance you can move closer to this job?

Personally I wouldn't do a 4 hour per day commute for pretty much anything, no matter how badly I wanted the experience. There are others out there who've done it, but they must have a higher tolerance for lots and lots of driving than I do.

Uhh, no way. That is waaay too far away.

No way, just because of one day of training and you are a new grad.

The drive is too much... and maybe I misread this but 1 day of training (orientation?), that sounds a bit scary for a new grad...

Can you move closer? Get a small studio or a roomate.

If your commute is over 50 miles (one way) it's tax deductible. Would I do it? No, way too far. One day orientation for new grad, oh h**l no !!!

I wouldn't do it, for a 1 day orientation and on call. I am a new grad too and I have looked at hospitals 2 hours away, I would make the commute for a string of 12 hour shifts and stay in a cheap hotel, but do a daily commute of 2 hours is way to much

I would keep applying locally. Some of those 8 hour shifts will turn into 9, and then you still have 2 hours of driving which would eventually get very tiring. And as a new graduate there will be days where you will stay more than 1 hour extra because of the unexpected events that are hard to handle for only because they are new.

Keep on trying for the closer job. It will come.

oh heck no, I won't drive more than 15 minutes to work. But then I live in a big metro area.

Good luck in your job search.

Nope. Not for the commute, but the one-day orientation for a brand new grad. That means they're willing to use you up and throw you under a bus if necessary. Hang in. Dress nicely and walk into every LTC in your area with a resume and copy of your lcense in hand. When asked what you want say whatever you've got. You'll be hired.
