Hello everyone i have a tough decision i was wondering if i can get an input from others that might have been through this to.
The issue is the following:
1) I am a new grad. After countless applications handed in i decided to apply out of town for full time or at least 3 days a week but the issue is the job would be about 2 hours away hours away.
2) 1 day of training for about 30 residents and it would be pretty much call in
Would you make a try for this 2 hour driver + 8 hour shift + 2 hour back home drive just for experience
or should i wait it out and just keep applying locally?
if you decide to take the job, know that many deal with the same situation. we do what you have to do to gain experience these days. i commute 1.5 hours every shift and have done so for over a year. there is no chance of that changing any time soon due to the local economy. i also work with people who commute further distances.
the ones who commute further also choose to room in a motel or rent a room locally for the days (in a row) that he/she works prior to driving home. so that may be an option too. i am told by those who rent rooms or studios that it is equivalent to paying for gas if he/she were to commute both ways every shift.
as for the 1 day of orientation, that is unacceptable!! you should not take the job for that reason alone. you probably will not lose your license; rather you may lose your job pretty quickly.

I wouldn't work next door for one day of training, even now with my experience.
As a new grad you not only need more orientation, you deserve it.
You worked hard to get your license, do not let any place of work disrespect it.
I hate to say this but just keep trying.
And Good Luck, a good job is out there.
