I went into nursing to do women's health/neonatal and I am getting so impatient trying to get in! It doesn't help that I hate my current job. I am so close to that 1 year mark, but I am being filtered out because I do not have the 1 year experience most hospitals are looking for.
So what should I be doing to beef up my resume? I am having a hard time finding NRP classes in my area that aren't for hospital employees. I am also considering having my resume professionally done.
I just know this is where I belong and I know I can do it! Thanks for any suggestions!

I had my resume professionally done by Sears, several years ago and he keeps it on record so he can update it prn. You just talk to him about your experience and he takes notes and comes up with a GREAT resume in 2 or 3 days. Think it might be around $100 initially. Check it out! :)

I too spent a year+ on med/surg. knowing all I wanted was OB. My suggestion, if you haven't already done it, get ACLS, NRP and maybe look into taking a basic fetal monitoring course. Also you could join AWHONN- all these things show your self motivated and know where you want to end up. I have finally moved to OB and I love it! Hang in there and good luck!
Thanks, I'm hoping for no more than a year of this also! I did join AWHONN recently so would I be able to take an NRP or EFM class through them?

I am in a very similar situation. I am SO TIRED of searching for OB jobs, SO TIRED of applying, SO TIRED of not even getting an interview. Then, the one interview I did have did not land me the job. I am getting so hopeless. I just did the NRP course and have ACLS. I tried to purchase the intro to fetal monitoring course through AWHONN (member of that, too) and can't take it because I have a MAC and it is only compatible with PC.
Just wanted to say that I feel your pain. Unfortunately, I can't offer any suggestions because nothing is working for me. I feel so unwanted! And I also HATE my current job. Strong word, but true.
Best of luck to you. Sorry to be a downer.

I feel your pain. What area are you currently working in? I am in a similar situation where I actually am working postpartum. I love it! I however dont love the state i moved to to take the job. I'm way to homesick. Is moving an option for you? You may do better with it than i did. If moving is an option send me a PM and i'll let you know of an area that really needs nurses and does have an ob opening.
what2donow- no problem, just glad to know someone out there understands! I dont think it would be so bad if my current job wasn't so terrible!
jennifers-I'm in cardiac/vascular,cardiac isnt so bad,but vascular, yuck! I guess its just the way we get treated by patients, awful! I have been looking out of state recently, I'll PM you!
I applied today to be a NICU cuddler volunteer, I'm excited about that, but there is a waiting list. I think I'm just going to emerge myself into reading and learning everything and anything about the field. I was looking through the sticky about OB books and think I'll pick up some of those. Then I'll really be prepared if I get a call!

If you want to get into OB badly enough (and are in a position to relocate) consider applying in and moving to a medically underserved area where they will be more willing to train you.
I did that back in the '80's by moving from the Balto/Wash area to the middle of the Navajo Reservation in AZ.
It was a shock in many ways (some quite humorous in retrospect) but well worth the time spent and unlike some who can't adjust to the new area, I fell in love with the desert and can't stay away!
At any rate, if you can commit yourself in your mind to staying 1-2 years you can get trained and have the experience under your belt to go to an area you prefer.

Don't give up. It can happen, I just got my official offer a week ago in OB.
Congrats!

Never give up. Keep telling everyone your goals and keep your ear to the ground. Volunteerism is often a route that opens doors for you. People get to k now you and see your willingness to do anything you can to achieve your goals.
I wish all new grads the best and hope each of you realizes your goals and dreams. Hang in there. We need you.
Thanks, its positive reinforcement that keeps me going!
