  1. Thank you, I think I've let emotions run away with me. Our family has been in crisis for 5 years and I'm seeing small glimmers of hope. I just need to take it slowly. The right job will come at the right time.
  2. No, it's a private school. I get that it could be their policy, but in less than 24 hours they put a "hold" on hiring for the position, but updated in their career opportunities as an available position.
  3. I know that know one can actually give me legal advice, but I just want to know if I should take this farther, so it doesn't happen to someone else or let it go. My child will be attending a new therapeutic day school. The building is actually new, not just a new school for my kiddo. Anyway, it just so happens they're hiring a PT school nurse. I've been on an extended leave of absence due to this child's mental illness. Now that he's going to this school I thought it would be an awesome opportunity to work and earn money again and be able to be on his schedule. Most nursing jobs aren't that flexible and my husband travels. When I submitted my application I got a phone call within 10 minutes. This is a very rural area and I'm sure qualified candidates are few and far between. I had an amazing phone interview with HR. She said I was a promising candidate and set me up with a virtual interview with the director and principal for the next afternoon. Five minutes after accepting the invitation I get a phone call from HR stating they can't interview with me at that time, due to my license being inactive. I was upfront with my license current status and that I am acquiring CEUs and will then promptly submit reactivation application promptly. She said without a current active license they couldn't interview me. Well student and graduate nurses interview all the time, so that isn't accurate. I asked if I should call her once my license is reactivated, she said no. So I thought this must be about my child being a student there. I didn't try to hide it, but I didn't disclose it either. I wasn't asked. I decided to send the director an email myself, since we have already spoken on matters regarding my child. Explaining why I thing I'm a good candidate and how I would still appreciate the opportunity to interview. Her response was the position has been put on hold. I went to the listing and it's been updated today still open. This is a school full of children with ADHD, autism, bipolar, DMDD. They open next week they have to have a school nurse. These kids are prone to hurting themselves more than the general population plus some have medical needs as well. There's no hold on the hiring. I'm sure this is because I have a child attending the school. Proving it would be impossible I'm sure. But to just shut down the interviewing process for this reason feels wrong.
  4. I am from the Midwest and the facility I work at is just as you have described. It is scary, but also has made me a stronger nurse, IMHO. As previously mentioned, when a crisis occurs all hospital staff have to be a part of the team. I'm not sure however, if this is backwards. Rural community hospitals do not have the luxury of endless resources as do larger facilities. Our facility provides a service to women that can't afford to travel for prenatal care or birthing services, as many of our patients do not own reliable transportation. We also have patients who choose to deliver with us due to the holistic approach our midwives offer.

I had a true knot with one of my own children, born in 2006. It was not previously detected and caused no complications. I had a vag delivery.

Like many of you here, becoming a labor nurse is my dream job. For me it became a reality approximately 6 months ago at a rural facility, which averages around 240 deliveries annually. Lately, since I am to be off orientation soon, I have been unsure of even being a nurse. I graduated at the end of 2009 and most of my experience has been med/surg. I love what I do. Teaching moms and families about newborn care, assisting with breast feeding, the look on parents' faces when they see their infant for the first time. These things are what I come to work for. I feel so inadequate and unsure of myself as a nurse though it scares me. I feel I've been adequately trained but maybe I'm just not meant to be a nurse. As this is a second career for me I don't know where to go from here.
  7. So, how do you go about meeting and e-mailing nurse managers when hospitals will not give out this information?
  8. I will be starting NOCs myself tomorrow, but I have younger children, so not being a day person on my days off is really not an option. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to adjust to rotating? We do have self scheduling as well and I'm wondering if it's better to knock out three shifts in a row or space them out.
  9. And don't forget to check out hospitals on the Illinois side. The pay is comparable.
  10. Well my experience, having recently graduated, is around $20/hr base pay for new grads. You do get shift differentials, but many hospitals are no longer offering bonuses or loan repayment for new grads at this time.

Don't give up. It can happen, I just got my official offer a week ago in OB.
  12. Congratulations!!! I hope everything goes as well for me. Are you starting in L&D or postpartum?
  13. The interview went really well; however, this job is in another state so I'm applying for licensure by endorsement and I'm afraid by the time I get a temporary license it will be too late. The recruiter called me back, and said they're hands are basically tied until then. The NM e-mailed me too and wants me to keep in close contact with HR and let them know as soon as I get my temporary license. So I've not been given an official offer, but I think it's promising. I'll post when I get an official response.
  14. I received an e-mail today from nurse recruiter saying she spoke with the NM and to give her a call at my earliest convenience tomorrow. I hope this is an encouraging sign. I too have toddlers and teenagers, and I found a daycare provider should I be given the offer. I'd still like to shadow on the floor before making a final decision, but I had a peer interview as well as the one with the NM and I felt comfortable with the staff I met. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I'm on pins and needles with anticipation.
