Hey everyone! Just thought I could start a thread and see what fields on nursing you guys would like to get into. My goal is to become a geriatric psych nurse (Praying). If not that, other specialties I am interested in is neuro ICU and the operating room. How about you guys?

I would love to work in labor and delivery post-graduation. I ultimately want to be a CNM. The other specialties I'm interested in are NICU, ER, and PACU.

Most new grads, by far, find that the first job they have after school is the one they can get, and it's probably not the one they dreeeaaaammmmmmed about. And most nurses are not working in the jobs or specialties they fantasized about as students. This is not to say they're living long lives of disappointment and mourning lost opportunities-- it means they fell in love with something else along the way and found a niche for themselves they didn't know existed when they were students.
An open mind lets new things fall into it.

I hate this question and I get it a lot since I graduate in less than 2 months. I hate it because I don't have a nursing dream job. I love that there are so many areas that I can go into, but nursing school clinicals just gave a tiny taste of each area and I need more before deciding :)

Well i can say from my own experience that geri psych is quite interesting! Never a dull moment. Good choice😊 I worked in a state psychiatric hospital for a couple years and worked in geri, but mostly adult and adult-forensic. As far as specialities go, I would say im most definitely trying to get in on a hem/oncology floor then later PEDS hem/oncology! Psych was and is my passion still though, it was one of those things I just knew I was meant for(read alot of college level psychology books at a young age). Good luck in your nursing journey !

ICU. It's what I have always wanted and going through school just confirms it. I am not overly picky of the type of ICU though I believe I would like CTICU or SICU most.

I am starting nursing school in January, so I am sure my mind will change once I see the real deal but right now I am most interested in labor and delivery, NICU or I would like to work for a plastic surgeon!
Again, where you work will mostly depend on where you can get a job, any job. When you poll nursing students and most of them say, "ICU, NICU, L&D, NP school, or CRNA school," you have to wonder who's going to take care of everybody else. Answer: Lots of them are. Not everybody will be doing those very limited specialties.
Don't plan on a specialty now, really. Keep your eyes and ears open, and something will pop up when you least expect it and in a way you couldn't possibly foresee. Any nurse who's been at it for more than a year or three will tell you that's what happens. (My specialty didn't even exist when I was in nursing school!)

I honestly feel like I would be a jack of all trades and try everything until something sticks. L&D, ICU, ER, OR, NUERO, PSYCH, GERI, AND ALL OF THE ABOVE. I think I would probably be the only person who would enjoy floating around and trying everything.

I really enjoyed my psych clinical but honestly so far I am loving med surg. I didn't go into nursing school with my mind set on anything really. My mom worked telemetry/med surg and she raves about it. So far I've had clinical for geriatrics, mental health, and med surg 1 so things may change but I'm definitely loving the hospital med surg floor. I'm looking forward to ER and trying the other specialties though :)
