What smells?? ER!

Nurses General Nursing

doctors firing nurses??? :(

what the heck was on er tonight? carter gets to decide how much money to spend on security measures, and then is going to fire three senior nurses to pay for it??? when did docs have anything to do with the unit budget, and when did they start firing nurses?? tell me this is not normal practice at any hospital...please.

i have had it. i know they have a medical advisor- does this guy have delusions of grandeur? does he need a psych consult, or one of those metal charts upside the head? someone on this board suggested an episode from the nursing perspective- let the docs take the background for an hour. i love that idea.

let's start a revolution...i'm off to find a feedback link, and i expect all of you professionals out there to send in letters.

back in a minute.

what about the part where abby gave the guy 400mg of demerol instead of 150mg? that showed her on the front line..didn't it? she took initiative and knocked that guy on his a$$.

I gave up on ER a LOOOOOOONG time ago. For entertainment value, I guess it's ok but I am only gonna suspend belief so much. I can watch CSI cause I know NOTHING about crime scene processing. Not such a leap for me to suspend belief there. Anywho...to each his/her poison.

canoehead, let's be realistic about this. it is tv. a chief resident would never be allowed to fire RNs. and if the chief resident was like carter - rich, a contributor to the hosptial, he would NEVER become involved in the day to day operations of the staff - he would sit on the finance committee of the board of trustees. remember - this is entertainment for the masses. do not get your resume together yet - frankie:D  ;) ;)

I think the show did the best job it could communicating all that the general audience could handle.

I have a question: Do ya'll think this is getting to the end of "ER"?

 :sniff: :crying2:

I hope not burntout! I have laughed out loud at the absolute absurdity of ER more times than I can count. I've also been ticked off a time or two about the portrayal of nurses BUT it's my ONLY television addiction and I love it! I just can't help it.

I have NO clue to what I will do with my Thursday nights when (GULP) this happens!

No biggie- those are the ones I almost posted too.

I think that people watch ER and believe it is how a hospital really runs. We all know nurses are much more than pill pushers and doctor's maids- but the general public doesn't. If the only point that gets across is that the nurses are responsible for day to day running of the unit and major decisions I would be extremely pleased.

If we allow the public to go on seeing nurses as they are portrayed on ER we will not be seen as professionals, able to make judgements about staffing, workload, and hospital resources- because that's not what they "see" nurses doing in the media.

Yes, OBNurseHeather it 'is entertainment' but it is not good for nursing's public image! And that is why it is important to respond to this. Time, the show's writers get a reality check.

Nurses public Image....hmm. Maybe E.R. is far fetched at times. But doen't the nurse catch the Crap quiet often?.Maybe the ''PUBLIC" needs to see that being a nurse IS NOT all glamour, goodlooking doctors, and their patients who ador them.

YEP! the public NEED to see that,.. we get sh*t on quiet often(literally):chuckle: That we work hard, under insane stress levels and YES hopefully soon E.R. will get all that on an episode HUH?

I didn't see a whole lot of nurses anywhere. It seemed Abby was the one sought out. Malik asked ONE question and was told "not now Malik."

I took Carrie's comment as rhetorical. She will have to include the number of employees she "wants/needs" in her budget request. Personnel would probably find slots for the nurses laid off.

Yes I think it's about at the end of a run, a good run though.

Just like the entertainment industry will never understand the plight of nursing, we will never completely understand the entertainment industry and the ratings game.

Show me ONE SHOW, that portrays ANY profession accurately. If they showed it how it was, th general public would either be bored, or wonder why we put up with all the crap we do.

I think nursing has bigger issues to deal with then the Thursday night line-up of NBC.

I prefer to work on the public image of nursing one patient at a time. I don't look to do it in the media, I just don't think it will ever happen.
