So maybe I'm a bit old fashioned, but I think there is a way to act while one is at work and a way to act elsewhere. I was interviewing someone for a management position in my building. The first 2 interviews were held with the administrator. Then I took this candidate on a tour of my building. We were walking down the hall and he asks "Is that a dragon fly on your leg?"
"Yes it is" I said wondering why he would comment on my leg. Then he asks, "Were you drunk when you got it??"
What?!?! I know I don't look my age or act my age but come on....you're really asking the DNS if she were drunk when she got a tattoo?
I'm offering the guy the job because I think he'll be really good in the position, but I'll have to tell him to keep the questions about people's tats to himself.

Unbelievable!, Yes I would definitely inform him that personal and/ or judgmental remarks like that are unacceptable in your facility.
Unless there is a policy otherwise, he should keep his opinions on tattoos (or any other such subject) to himself.
What does how you look or act and if it is "according to your age" (not sure what that means ;-0 ) have to do with anything????
I would keep an eye on this one!
Oh and I would jump- better a bad trip than a bad trip (if you know what I mean) a broken leg can mend, but removing a tattoo is PAINFUL!!- (no Osteoporosis to blame...)
I jumped out of planes in my youth, took up scuba in my middle age, I think I will get my first tattoo when my granddaughter gets hers...she's almost 6.
I might have looked at him and said..."are you drunk now???"
I snurffled my iced tea when I read the "bad trip" comment...this urban legend keeps marijuana illegal which costs our government lots and lots of money every year.
I hope this story doesn't give away my 'true' identity--One of my best friends was turning 65 and for her birthday wanted to do something she had never done before. Trouble is she's done lots and lots of things. So we narrowed it down to 3 things: Skydiving, smoking dope in the woods, or tattoos. I said I wouldn't ever jump out of a plane---osteoporosis is my excuse. I offered to try to get some marijuana to smoke but she was afraid she'd 'have a bad trip'. So off we went to the tattoo parlor. There were 3 of us...all nurses. We went a week before to make sure the place was clean and his technique was sterile. Except for the pain it was a gigantic hoot! And, no, none of us was drunk.
I got a tattoo before becoming a nurse, and I'm now very curious. I know [most] places use sterile needles every time, but what about the ink? Is it sterile? Is the red they're using for me only? Know what I mean...?
I got my nose pierced at 45....thinking about a belly ring this summer and still want a tattoo- I always wanted the Rolling Stones Tongue. When I am in the Nursing Home they will say "Wow! That Old Lady must've rocked in her day...nose ring, belly ring, and Rolling Stones Tattoo...and maybe I'll grow special medicinal "herbs" in my little therapeutic plant garden.....no seroquel for me...just daily visits to the "herb" garden...hehe

I dont know, his acting inappropriate doesn't give her license to do the same, in fact role modeling proper behavior was the best course of action.
I love it when my staff let slip remarks that show their true colors, lets me know exactly what I am dealing with!!

I agree...however, I am not always "nice" or "proper" in-spite of what my patients and families may think. I certainly wouldn't suggest someone else behave in the same fashion as me...we each walk our own path...but his question would not have amused me and he would have had an uncomfortable moment because of it. Not sayin I couldn't do it better...just sayin...
I am certain that there are tons of professionals who frequent allnurses who would handle it more appropriately than me. Heck, I even act in a proper fashion most of the time...

i don't have a tattoo. when my goddaughter turned 18 and was about to begin her sophmore year in college, she called and asked me to lunch. we had often acted as substitute parents and when she was
a high school senior, she lived with us briefly, until she and her parents worked through some problems.
i was expecting some new problem had arisen, but suddenly she blurted out, "aunt kathy, i'm going to get a big snake tattoo.
it'll wrap around my neck and end at my waist." i almost spit my iced tea on the poor woman sitting at the next table!! she was dean's list and had plans to either go to med school or become a marine biologist and all i could think was that a tattoo that large could interfere somehow with that. she was adamant.
we finally made a deal. i would pay for and one, two, or three small tattoos and i would choose the tattoo shop. she begged me not to tell her parents (her mom is my older cousin, but she has always called us "aunt and uncle") and hard as it was, i didn't.
i did a lot of checking and finally found a place i could live with. she was much braver getting them than sissy me would have been. she got a penguin, a frog, and a cat, and all can be covered up while working. she's almost 30 now and still remembers that day fondly.
her parents found out about that day and were simply relieved i'd headed off that huge snake.
