I could see how some "lay" people would be offended by our comments..... but hey.......sometimes you gotta laugh or go completely insane.........
coping through humor is one thing....a comment that is outdated and sounds uneducated/racist is another... :stone

I left once because they kept pumping me full of steroids for a migraine AFTER 4 different kinds to no avail. I never asked for narcs but felt like shooting myself I got such bad adverse reactions so I left Against Doctors Advice. I'm sure they thought I was holding out for narcs though. Coping skills of a flea? Nope, just felt like they were making me sicker.

So z...
Are you saying that you go to an ER 30 times in 2 months, and..
At least 4 times in a week, and...
Have had social services intervene, and...
Have had ever counseling agency in the county at your doorstep, and...
Free meals delivered daily, although you smoke like a chimney?
If so, then I think your coping mechanisms are out of whack.
If not, you are not who we are talking about.
By the way...do you work anywhere near an ER?
Just asking.

Well I can't say that my coping mechanisms are out of whack. I didn't read the post carefully enough. :imbar
I grew up literally surrounded by nurses...i know its not first hand experience and wait until I get 30 plus years under my belt THEN talk to you but I'm just shedding light on my side and how I see things. I still can't wait to start nursing school and find myself discouraged by some of the stuff I'm reading here ,but c'est la vie!

I was responding to ER nurse's coping mechanisms in general. Which you have to admit, can be a bit morbid at times, hilarious at others. We have an ER nurse that acts as charge at night. She is in her 80's (believe it or not!). Old flight/trauma nurse. She was running in the hall the other night squirting people with water from a sryinge. :chuckle We were packed to the gills, people in the halls on carts. They were all laughing, too.

gotta say something here.....I find this statement offensive. smacks of racism to me. I don't see what her being a woman of color had to do with anything. :stone

Sorry I was not trying to offend anyone, just stating the facts that she was big and scary. Last thing I am is racist. Black women are just a bit more intimidating, especially when she is 6ft and you are 5 1" she weighs in at 200 and you at 125. I have a tall dark drink of water at home, if you know what I mean.
Would you like a shovel? Just asking.

I am a lay person, never been a nurse but I have worked in heathcare at a hospital for several years. I am NOT trying to say that means I know as much or more than any nurse on here. I will adamently say that my knowledge pales compared to y'alls.
I did want to comment on that quote tho. From all i have read here...and I have been reading for the last few weeks...It wouldnt cross my mind to be offended at all. I realize you are talking about the worst of the worst patients...and you DO have to laugh to keep from going insane, I bet.
Reading the complaints about patients...actually makes me feel GOOD. I can now say I was the model patient each time I was hospitalized. I guess that comes from being raised to give respect.
So NAW you arent offended anyone...just telling the God's honest truth.
Keep it up!!!
PS If someone were to say that ALL patients are trouble then I might be offended but I havent seen anyone say anything like that.
Keep up all the good work you people do day in and out. i am very impressed with all of you.....and I hope im lucky enough to get a nurse like y'all next time I have surgery or are hospitalized for my chronic pain.

Never tell an ED RN that you dont like them
You will either get someone worse
or you will piss her off and really give you reason not to like them
