Hi, I'm trying to find out at different nursing schools what nursing class has the most people to fail. At my school, there is a high failure rate in med-surg I. Most people at my school do not pass med-surg I the first time.

I also heard that it is MedSurg at our school :uhoh3:

Med-Surg has the highest failure rate at my school.

We've had 11 people drop pharm so far our of 115, and we don't have our HESI and final for 2 more weeks (combined 40% of our grade). However, some may have left the program entirely and about 15 people were already retaking it from a previous semester, so perhaps some of them are realizing they might not be cut out for this (at least for this program). Pharm has a really tough reputation, especially w/2 other classes in 10 weeks. No one I know is gone yet, so it's not anyone who answers questions in class or is too talkative in general. I don't think my program loses too many people overall, but some do have to repeat a class/semester (we're allowed 2 or we're out).

We started out with 40 students in fundamentals and pharm and lost 11. We picked up 9 for med-surg I and in my med-surg I class, out of 38 people we lost 28 and only 10 advanced to med-surg II. I was one of the 28 that had to re-take med-surg I over. In the med-surg II class only 3 failed. When I took med-surg I over, out of 40 students only 5 failed this time. This time I passed !!! I start med-surg II on Monday, so hopefully I get through it....

We work in semesters, not classes. By far the two most difficult are 1st and 3rd semesters. Third semester was the hardest though. We started out with 36 and now have 22 going into our last semester. 3rd semester consists of Psych, Gerontology and Med-Surg III. First semester we lost 6 but only 2 were due to failing. The others were due to realizing they weren't meant to be a RN.

Fundamentals first semester and med/surg the last.

It gets REALLY hard to keep going by the summer semester. You are in the classroom or on the clinical floor while everyone is out enjoying the summer. A lot of folks want to take time to enjoy the nice weather on the weekend. DON'T DO THAT! Stick with your study schedule, because in a lot of programs, there are more NCLEX type questions added to exams each semester.

We lost 20 out of 72 during our 4th level (Critical Care/Psych). Our program usually loses a lot during MedSurg too.

Our director swears she can do this with a list of NLN scores, and personal references, she also requests your attendence in all classes, not just the grades :uhoh21: this is the first year our college has admitted 24, usually incomming ADN is a class of 12 out of the average applicant pool that's probably equal to your entire starting class, gotta love small town USA :lol2:

This wouldn't happen to be SFCC would it?

Specializes in med surg, school nursing.

We lost 1 in fundamentals, 1 in medsurge and 2 in ob/pedi.

Last year our school lost 20 out of 60 to pharmacology class...

So do you think something is seriously wrong with all nursing programs if people fail like this????
