What motivates you to go to work every day?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

In this tough economic time I'm so grateful to have a full time job. However, there are just days like today I rather stay in bed. I often have to remind myself of the rewards of working and things I can do with the money I will make. Here are just a few things that gives me that extra motivation to get up and get ready for work:

1) I need to work to first pay my bills

2) I'm getting married in 6 months and have a TON of things to pay off for the wedding

3) There are so many new grads and experienced nurses without jobs

4) I actually like helping people

Okay, so what gives you that extra umph to roll out of bed and get to work?

Specializes in Med/Surge, Psych, LTC, Home Health.

Mortgage. Food. Bills. Debt.

Otherwise I just wouldn't be working, I don't think. At least not as often as I do.

Specializes in Telemetry, Case Management.

Got to have that insurance to pay for my stupid expensive medicines.

Specializes in Dialysis, Long-term care, Med-Surg.

Not working is not for me. I recently had 1.5 months at home in between jobs and I nearly went crazy. Going off to work sometimes keeps me from arguing with my husband, spending too much money, or thinking about problems. Work is a world I go to where I can put off my laundry list of errands and turn my brain off to everything outside of the hospital walls.

Specializes in General Internal Medicine, ICU.

The paychecks for my bills, rent, food, car, student loan and leftovers for indulgence.

lol! thanks for this.

Specializes in geriatrics.

Bills. Yes, I enjoy my residents, but if I could work 6 shifts a month and travel the rest of the time, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Specializes in Labor and Delivery, MS.

Lets be honest! I love my job but I would not be doing it if I didn't have bills to pay.

Specializes in LTC.

me too!

Specializes in CNA.

Seeing the residents/patients. Many light up when they see me arrive to my shift. I get hugs and pats on my hands after I have helped them out.

Specializes in NeuroICU/SICU/MICU.

I work, in general, to pay my bills. On a day-to-day basis, though, what motivates me to get out of bed and go to work is a desire to not leave my coworkers working short (or in a bind to find a replacement charge nurse, because there aren't many of us on nights).

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

Tequila.

Seriously...I go because I am never bored--I never know what each day will bring and I learn something new every day. I'm in a great specialty and I'm fortunate to be working in a great facility. And the pay helps. What's not to love?

(and for the record, I can't drink tequila)
