PC or Macintosh? Desktop, laptop, PDA?
I'm getting a computer soon - just wondering what everyone liked and preferred as a nursing student.
Thanks!
I'm really curious to keep reading and see what ya'll have to say, especially about Dell's. We are considering trying to get a new one so that I have something that isn't so ancient for school in the fall.
We actually have three Dells; two desktops and a laptop. My DH is a programmer/systems analyst and also handles the computer equipment purchasing for the company he works for. He wouldn't consider buying anything but a Dell.
I love my iMAC, EXCEPT that I can not open my instructors posted lectures or any documents they have compiled with microsoft...I can open the online resources just fine, i.e. text books, tests, case studies...no problem.
A new development this week, I emailed my resume & I was notified that THEY could not open my appleworks document! so...
we also have a Dell, we got it 2 Christmases ago and got the deal where you get a flat panel monitor instead of the huge regular ones. I love our Dell, we haven't had any trouble out of it at all.
If you are wanting to get a computer at a discount, try http://www.overstock.com they sell refurbished computers and computers that maybe don't have the newest components (like say a pentium 3 instead of a pentium 4) I actually have my eye on a IBM thinkpad that's like $500.

I have a 3-year old HP which is periodically lazy and tends to crash whenever something important is around the corner. However, it only cost me $700 for everything (printer too) and then another $59 for memory upgrade since 256 MB wasn't enough (not to mention I have twice that much available on my digital camera!) HP customer support is great. If I could do it again, it would be a Dell laptop with wireless internet. I drag my work-owned 20-pound dinosaur laptop around with me since it has Word and Powerpoint and my HP 6738 doesn't. Only bad thing about my laptop (besides it's old age) is that I can't exactly buy a replacement keyboard...last week my keys on the left side stopped working. I've taken them off and replaced them, and no matter what I do they refuse to comply. So if I have to write a paper that requires the use of the characters 1, q, a, or z, I'm SOL.
I've heard DELL is #1 and that's all we use at my work...in 3 years I've had two computers there and NO problems...so they would be my choice.
l've lost count on how many computers l've had,, l only buy brand names now, as generic computers l've had troubles with... One brand name "Packard Bell" l had gave me plenty of stress, l ended up calling it "Packed in Hell"......... My fav pc is the IBM, had 3 IBM'S now and could never fault them.
Also look at HSN website. I have bought several computers from them, when I was living in the US.................they have great service and great software already pre-loaded. Packages were usually much better than what you could be direct from the manufacturer. Just depends on what is available when you are ready for a purchase. And they have technical support available 24/7 and FREE, if you need it.

Dell Desktop and another dinosaur Gateway in my daughter's room. I'm thinking of investing in a PDA and laptop (both Dell) for nursing school. If I order soon, I can order through my school's website and get a 10% student discount.
