What are the item(s) you need most for nursing school?

Published

I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.

I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???

Thanks for your input!

This is the watch I have, I got it at a uniform store but it's on the allheart.com website, it has the military time and a second hand...

If Merrils and nursemates dont work for you maybe you should try Earth. www.earth.us the problem is that if you start wearing them you cannot wear regular shoes again because they have a "negative heel" that helps people with knee, back or heel problems and when you put on a regular pair of shoes you feel propelled forward. I have the Harvest shoe and the Picnic shoe and they are perfect and I NEVER find shoes that feel good.

My school "forces" us to buy a kit with stethoscope, tuning fork, scissors, hammer, etc. It's issued during orientation. So, before you start buying all this stuff, make sure you aren't going to be buying it twice!

As for the stuff I did buy that I think is indispensable...rolling book bag and laptop...oh, HOW COULD I FORGET...a jump drive! Preferably one that hooks to your keyring.

Clinicals---I cut a couple of pieces of paper into a manageable size, staple the pages together to form a little notebook, and then throw it all away after my careplan is done. We don't chart at the hospital, but we have to "chart" in our careplans. The disposable notebook has been quite handy and it's quite functional/cheap.

Best of luck, hanpat

i recently bought an old pdr (2001) for homework around the house at a used bookstore. its great...a little old but still pretty up-to-date to go with the book that came with our kit. also, i got really thick ankle socks from the scrub store, they are great! my feet feel so cushy! and a little clipboard that opens up and has all these little cubbies inside to hold pens, penlights, nametage, etc. inside. i picked that up at walmart for $8.

Book Stand!!! My husband built me a heavy duty table-top book stand after my jr. year in nursing school. My back and neck were killing me from stooping over my text books.

Hello! I have so enjoyed this thread and everyone's input! I start my ADN progran on January 11th. I made a list of many of your ideas and will begin purchasing/implementing them today!

Also. thanks to the thread on PDA's and your wonderful input, my husband bought me a Palm TX for Christma. The Palm TX is not as expensive as the Dell or Ipaq. It has wifi and Bluetooth. Per your recomendations, I downloaded Epocrates free software and Diagnasaurus. I will download more soon. I love my PDA. I use the alarms daily for various tasks personal and business. I use it to record information that I don't want to lose. I am very pleased with it. Thanks again everyone! Happy New Year!:Melody:

Wow! Thanks guys for all your input, I start the nursing program Jan. 17th, and the list of things they gave us didn't have alot of this stuff on it, alcohol wipes, pockets on labcoats, etc. Lots of help! Thanks for all the help

Things I couldn't live without were: A large desktop calendar-so you can see everything that is going on that month, small monthly calendar - to carry around with you, multi-color pens so you can write in a different color for each classes assignment on your calendar, PDA (is great so you don't have to lug lots of books to clinical...but not a necessity), good shoes - Merrell was the shoe that was the most comfortable for me, Saunders & HESI book- help to put things in simpler terms. We had to have lots of Change available to copy PRs/ teachers notes for class.

I think a small bible will also help.
