I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.
I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???
Thanks for your input!
One word of advice when purchasing supplies, be sure to check the validity of a company before ordering on-line. As most of us are students, we don't have money to get ripped off on the internet. I would highly suggest staying clear of Reasons Medical. i ordered a stethescope on-line in September and my credit card was charged but I have never received this item. They do not respond to phone calls or rarely e-mails.
Welcome to AllNurses.com, and thanks for the warning.
I've never heard of that company. Has anyone else had any good or bad experience from them??????????

Then go to your credit card company and file a chargeback on the item citing fraud on the part of Reasons Medical. Then go to the BBB and file a complaint there.
I've been in ebay business for 6 years now, so I'm a pro at how to go about getting your stuff or money back with people that don't deliver. ;-)
I just got my acceptance letter for the nursing program yesterday!! I start in January and this thread (and website) is great!
I've been on the site before, while I was doing my pre-reqs, and found it a great help. I once again find myself thrilled to have found (and joined) this site. All the experienced nurses and students that come on and give advice and explanations are a God send that I'm sure I'll need over and over again. Hopefully, I'll be able to contribute to helping others soon, too!
Thank you so much!!!
Congratulations, good luck and welcome back to AllNurses.com! :balloons:

For PDA software, epocrates.com has a FREE version of drug calculator and lots of other dosage, and diagnostic tools. My sister is a new MD and said that it was invaluable, especially being free. :-) I start an LPN program in Jan, so I haven't actually used epocrates myself, but it downloaded and installed easily. It's available for Palm and PocketPC. www.epocrates.com
Now that I have only 2 more tests and I am done w/ my first semester, I feel like I am now qualified to reply to this posting!!!:chuckle
Supplies that really came in handy this semester included:
Good notebooks and folders (they get a lot of use)
Lots of index cards (I prefer 4x6, I laughed when I bought the package of 500 @ staples, but I only have 100 left!!!)
Pens with soft grips/highlighters
Penlight
Littman Lightweight steth (cheapest of the littman's;can hear really well and it's not heavy or bulky)
Palm Pilot (I have a Zire 31, with drug guide/lab test/medical dictionary installed)
Some extra money or change for coffee/tea
A good attitude
An open mind
MOTIVATION (nursing school is something you have to want to do, you can't just show up to class and expect to be successful)
Some good friends/classmates who have motivation also to help through rough patches/discouragement at times.
Good luck to everyone who is starting out and good luck to those who are almost there!:)

I agree! I couldn't live w/o my printer/scanner & the ability to print out my index note cards (I tk nearly all printers can print in the index card size though... I have already gone through 3 paks of paper & 2 sets of printer cartridges...
