This week, I have learned...
1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR
2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.
Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.
3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.
4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.
5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.
6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.
7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.
Sarcoidosis sucks.
8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.
9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.
My list is boring this week.
What have you learned?
My eye lid specialist told me I need ptosis repair & biopsy. I don't want to know how much it will cost.Oh & update! My mom is a actually going to get her eye checked out.
How does one even begin to specialize in eye lids??
Congrats on your mom going to the doctor. One thing I learned about my dad-sometimes he has to think about things for awhile before he does what I've already suggested. It's like he needs me to remember that HE is the parent and I am the child.
Doesn't help my digestion, though. Lol

Lol. I don't know, I really don't. He does though.
I know I was happy to hear it because he face was really swollen this morning & it was really disconcerting. :/ Lol. I know how that feels!

It starts with cranio-facial-maxillary surgery. A dear person I know has had EXTENSIVE unbelievable amounts of reconstructive surgery after MRSA destroyed her facial muscles, nerves and surrounding tissues. Her most recent surgery was eye lid.

Ok, now I see it. I just had a mental image of someone doing a Surgical residency of eyelids ONLY lol.
Is it 5:00 yet? It really needs to be 5:00 lol.
I'm glad you're not leaving! I have learned so much from you & several others while I've been here on AN & I still have tons to learn. :)It's like they opened the flood gates to crazy! All of a sudden these crazy posters & topics have been coming, not good. But I agree, I even had to adjust my posting habits. People can get ugly when they post online.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's related to the beginning of a new semester- seems like part of a cycle that every so often, oddly enough coinciding with the start of a semester or high school graduation time, that there's an influx of new posters. Hopefully with a little bit of time, things will calm down as the workload of being a nursing student takes some of those… overzealous/overly sensitive/overly odd.. posters away from spending time on AN.
In fact, last September the same things were happening, and I took a week's break. By the time that break ended, things had calmed down a good bit.
Then stop reading good threads!!!!lol I kid, I kid.
In other news, on the surface it looks like the deers thread was closed because TPTB are just as grammar obsessed as we are. :)
Anyone object to next week's thread starting today? The argument spilling into this one is a total buzz kill.
I was TRYING to learn some nursing hacks and be brilliant in clinical.
Geez
