I was just curious to know what schedule all the RN's out there work? I would like to do 3 days on and 3 days off myself, but will take whatever comes available. Please no negative comments- there seems to be a lot of rude people on here for some reason who love to argue for no reason whatsoever. God bless!

Correction on date from I am an RN but not practicing. I meant to say sinceJan 2009. thanks

You can't really work 3 on, 3 off if you are working 12 hour shifts, because that is only 6 days total, and since a week is 7 days, this formula doesn't really work.

You can, however, work 3 on, 4 off. When I was younger, I liked this best. Now, for a variety of reasons, I like working 2 on, then 2 or 3 off, then 2 on, 2 or 3 off, repeat, repeat, repeat. My complaint with 3 in a row on nights is it felt like all I did for 3 days straight is sleep. I felt like I missed too much with my kids, my husband, my friends, and my house. Working just two days doesn't feel like full time work to me. It's all mental mind games, but the 2 in a row on makes me feel like I get paid full time wages for part time work.

Nice thing is that there are many options for scheduling, even within facilities, so it shouldn't take you too long to find what will work for you.

Dear nurses everywhere,

I am not worried at this point what hours I should work. I am a new grad RN, have been looking everywhere for a job since Jan. 2008. If I do not get a job by the end of this year , I am leaving nursing completely to pick up my broken life and spirit. I would like some input from all of you out there. Thanks. From: I am an RN but not practicing.

Anurse,

Where do you live? I think you probably need to move to find a job if it's that bad in your area. I did it, and so did a few of my classmates. You have to do what it takes to find something. Start applying all over the country. You can move back to your home after you get a year of experience.

I work weekend option, every Sat and Sun night 18:45-07:15. I get paid for 3 days. I also get full benefits. Alot of these positions are no longer available due to the recession.

I get M-F off every week. However, because of bordem, I work two-three 8 hour shifts in the GI lab. I like the fact I'm not commited to working the overtime. I do it because I want to.

I like my schedule because I can travel during the week and not have to worry about using PTO time. I am sorta a stay at home mom, but the kid is at school during the day. I am still available for my son in the evenings and at night.

Work in a Children's hospital. We self schedule and mostly get what we sign up for, with a few minor changes to cover what is needed. I work 7a-7p which is really 0645 to 1930. Every other weekend is required or 4 weekend days a month. Will do three in a row if it is a weekend otherwise I work 2 on 1 off 1 on for my week. Getting too old to work 3 days in a row during the week...

To the new grad that has not found work. Can you move? It may be what is required to get a job. I'm in TX and there are jobs down here. Our hospital does an internship with new grads, it lasts 3mo of class/floor then preceptorship then on your own after 6mo. You are required to sign a 2 year contract. Otherwise new grads are a big expense to train and many hospitals are not willing to put out the investment in this economy.

I work weekend cadre. I work 7a-7p Saturday,Sunday,Monday.

I work day shift - 7:30am-8pm. We self schedule, but sometimes the manager has to shift us around based on staffing. They try to accommodate if there are certain days we REALLY want off.

We have to work 3 weekend days a month (sat or sun). Once a month we work a 4th shift one week.

3 in a row is exhausting, but sometimes it pays off, like when you work sunday, monday, tuesday 1 week and then thursday, friday, saturday the next week, so you get 8 days off in between without using any vacation time. (I'm doing that next month and going to Italy!)

The shifts are 12's: 6a-6:30p, or 6p-6:30a. Right now i'm on days, and then in a few weeks i'll be switching to nights. There isn't a set pattern to it, but it's 3 days on, 4 off. Usually it's been 2 on, 3 off, 1 on, 1 off. We go by a 2 week pay period, so actually as long as we work 6 days out of 14, we can do any combination of on and off.

I work in ICU. in a two week pay period, I work six 12's (7:30-20:00) and one 8 (7:30-16:00). I don't have a set work schedule, each pay period is different.

I work evenings, 3-11:30 - 5 shifts/wk, 30 minutes for lunch, every other weekend. I really love my shift; when I worked days I would go home and do nothing, now I am productive during the day and then go in and work 8 hours. I also don't have to set an alarm :)

I work 7a-7p which is nice but I would have preferred 8-hours shifts.
