Nurses General Nursing

Published

Im not a nurse, but im considering it.(18 years old)

I know that in nursing school you only have time for studying because of the intense work load. But how does that change once you have a job?

I personally have a passion for drawing, and after not drawing for about 2 years, im slowly getting back into it and realizing how much I love it. A small percentage of me would want to go to art school, but it doesn't seem to offer much stability. I definitely want to have enough time to draw, perhaps do freelance work, take art classes, etc and basically still enjoy life. I wouldn't want my life to revolve around nursing, and i'd be broken hearted if I couldnt do art as much as I'd like to.

So...what do you guys like to do outside of work? How do you manage a work/personal life balance?

I am in nursing school, almost done, and I mountain bike almost every morning. There's plenty of time for real life.

Is there any other?

I think we might have just become best friends. At least on my end. Not in a creepy way.

You guys and gals are lovely :) I love how this thread has just taken off, and im glad to see that it is possible to have a life outside of nursing school/nursing itself! Im not a partier, in fact im rather introverted, but I am into playing video games(and I plan to play well into old age :p), drawing, reading and things like that, and this is really comforting. I've been reading some horror stories about nursing and not having much free time, but this thread has certainly calmed me down a lot

Oh, forgot to include things I enjoy. Hopefully, after becoming a nurse, I'll still have time to make for these: video games, watching movies, knitting/crocheting, attempting to cook/bake, playing guitar and piano, stalking AN, and eating.

Googled it. I don't own a 3DS, so nope, never heard of it. Nerd alert. Some of my favorites include: Chrono Trigger, Tales of Fantasia, Secret of Mana, Pokemon (the originals on Gameboy), Breath of Fire, League of Legends.. oh man, I could go on for ages. This is what happens when you have brothers who only play video games all day.

Balance is not only possible, but recommended.

I love nursing and have been practicing for nearly 40 years.

I work to live, I do not live to work.

I take my paid time.

I try to provide as much food for my table as possible from hunting, fishing, and gardening. When I shoot a moose I trade some of that meat for other things, like pork or beef or chicken, etc. Sometimes those pursuits take up quite a bit of my time.

I cut and prep wood to heat my home.

I hike and ride a mountain bike.

I play the guitar and draw to satisfy my creative urges.

You will find the time to do what you want and need to do, or you will burn out.

It's up to you.

Good luck.

Its not that difficult to maintain a balance. I think people hype-up the extent of how busy your life will be once you start nursing school. You wont have to study 6 hours a day. You'll hardly ever pull all nighters. Its definitely not as serious as people like to proclaim it is. I hang with friends, drink on occasian, binge watch my favorite shows on Netflix, have/had a boyfriend & a healthy sex life. Nursing school isn't as challenging as some would like you to believe. Good luck! You'll do fine.

You must be gifted. I myself have a genius IQ and pulled many all nighters. During my OB rotation, I had the text book open in the car so I could read during a stoplight.

I found nursing school to be an exceptional challenge. I knew I could flunk out during any given 4 week time frame, I was not going to fail.
