What field are you in??

Nurses General Nursing

I need to know what you guys think is the best field in nursing and why you think it is. I recently lost my job and now I am searching for another one. I'm not sure what to pursue now. I have been lucky enough in the past to have jobs presented to me and they each were an increase in pay as well as responsibility. It's kind of hard to swallow knowing that I probably will not make what I am used to making, but I can live with that.

So, tell me what you guys are doing and what you love about it. I need some direction right now and I definitely do not want to get into something that doesn't fit. I have done Med-surg, psych, Case Management, LTC.

Thank you in advance for sharing your ideas!

I love what I do, which is legal nursing and life care planning. But enough about me. Have you checked the Specialties section at the top of the page? There are bazillions of choices. Go cruise through them and see what appeals to you. Alas, you will probably still have to get up to go to work (although there are many mornings I check my email on my laptop before I get up and stay there in bed and work all morning. Ahhhh.)

Specializes in Psychiatric/ Mental Health.

I'm a psych nurse, I enjoy it alot, can't imagine doing any other kind of nursing.

People say ignorant things like "Psych nurses aren't real nurses." As a psych nurse, you refine your assessment skills, as pts most often times don't JUST have a mental illness, they have multiple ailments that must be addressed. I've seen pts come to the unit with fratures, unstable glucose levels, high fevers, liver failure, etc, and as a NURSE, we address ALL issues, not just psych issues. I enjoy providing comfort to this population, hearing their stories, and treating them like human beings, not outcast. I just love psych nursing. This job reminds me that at anytime, you or I could be on the other side of the nurses station , asking for help. I love this population.

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.

worked in rehab and now ortho with 20-30% gen med/surg. I love ortho.

Perhaps music, perhaps is an art, I love this two project, I also enjoy they bring me joy.

I have a part time job in the community as a elderly daycare nurse.

I LOVE IT!!!!

No holidays, no weekends, no evenings, and virtually no stress!

We do little field trips and as the nurse, I'm required to go along for the ride... this is fun!

I'm amused by our bus rides because these folks are excited to hop on the bus and go for a ride.

They can be like kids (no disrespect intended) because they save seats for each other, ooh and ahh over the pretty houses we pass and squeal over suicidal squirrels in the road, crack jokes over the bus driver's driving and they are all so funny.

I'm lucky I got this job because the nurses who do it love it and never leave until they are ready to completely retire.

I'm treated with respect as the nurse and as a professional.

However, as easy peasy as this job is, I would not have gotten it with no prior nursing experience because they need nurses who can recognize trouble and experience in knowing what to do.

I was told my geri-psych experience landed me the job because it entailed dealing with medical and psych (and there is a huge psych aspect to this job).

All clients must be able to get about on their own and feed and toilet themselves.

What a nice break!

Some days I hand out 2 pills, some days I hand out none.

Charting and vitals is once a month (unless there's a problem, which is rare).

Otherwise, I'm participating in activities, teaching staff or doing an assessment for a new client.

The secretary takes all the phone calls and they are almost never calls for me.

I might fax a doctor's office for a med order or an H&P but that's it.

Best nursing job ever... now if only it could be full time with benefits...

:D

Specializes in Geriatrics, Transplant, Education.

I started in subacute rehab, now in transplant med-surg. Have loved both!

Specializes in Hospice.

I work on a Progressive Care Unit that is also stroke certified. I love the cardiac patients the best. We see a wide variety of disease processes and I am constantly honing my critical thinking skills. I am a little adrenaline junky, not enough to work in ICU or ER though. This unit works perfectly for me, I've been on this unit for over 14 years.

Specializes in Psychiatric/ Mental Health.

Sounds super fun Hygiene Queen! I would just love to have that job.

Specializes in kids.

School nursing is the best! They make me laugh every day!

Specializes in Allergy and Immunology.

I am in Allergy/Asthma. In the clinic. I like it. I still learn something new just about everyday. I was also in Detox which was very interesting.
