What field are you in??

I need to know what you guys think is the best field in nursing and why you think it is. I recently lost my job and now I am searching for another one. I'm not sure what to pursue now. I have been lucky enough in the past to have jobs presented to me and they each were an increase in pay as well as responsibility. It's kind of hard to swallow knowing that I probably will not make what I am used to making, but I can live with that.

So, tell me what you guys are doing and what you love about it. I need some direction right now and I definitely do not want to get into something that doesn't fit. I have done Med-surg, psych, Case Management, LTC.

I work in acute rehabilitation as a staff nurse / house supervisor at a small, freestanding acute rehab hospital. Our job is to take debilitated patients and attempt to restore them to the highest level of functioning possible, whatever that may be.

While I don't love this field of nursing, it does carry a greater sense of purpose. It is cool seeing a sick bedbound patient roll onto the unit while laying on a stretcher upon admission, and even cooler to watch as the same patient walks out of the building upon discharge with modified independence a few weeks later.

Thank you for your post, Commuter! I can see how being a Rehab nurse can be rewarding! My question to you is, if you don't love the field you're in, why not make a change?

I do couplet care(postpartum and nursery) and love it! I really enjoy watching new parents learn their baby, teach them to care for the baby and everything is all entails. 98% of our patients are stable! self sufficient, and don't require a ton of care. Majority of my job Issachar g which I love!

Why, Emergency Nursing, of course! I like being a calm presence for people who are scared, and I like starting IVs!

I am in Emergency Nursing also, its my first RN career. As an LPN I loved Hospice, I am on burnout from driving all over and the pay was great. I made more then than I do now. Why the change?I want to become a travel nurse :).

I'm in corrections (I'm an LVN). I love it, sometimes. Lol. :p It's just a LOT of paperwork that is soo redundant & could be cut down if it was on the computer. But other than that the nursing part is great. You never know what could happen, we have a doctor & NP come for clinics so we always have labs to draw. We are always soo busy, especially since we are super short staffed right now. Oh & the pay is really great. I'm making the most I've ever made at the facility.

I spent 15 years in maternal child (primarily L&D, and one year in NICU). I love working with new parents. And no matter how many deliveries I was in (I stopped counting at around 2,000), they never ceased to amaze me. Now I do home visits with first time moms who are low income, and I feel like I'm in the best job in the world. I really get to develop relationships with my clients, and the perks of the job are great (I schedule my own day, I have weekends and holidays off).

I've tried several fields of nursing and never particularly loved any of them. I've had multiple non-nursing jobs and never loved any of them, either.

The problem is not nursing. The problem is me. There, I said it! My personality is not exactly compatible with nursing because I am not a people person. My work ethic is not well-developed, either, so I dislike waking up to report to any type of job. However, I will stick with any position I deem tolerable rather than jump from the frying pan into the fire.

Commuter...I laughed at this, even though it probably wasn't meant to be funny! :roflmao: I do not like waking up to report to any type of job either, but I do love nursing!! I understand about not wanting to jump into the fire. Maybe you should consider becoming a writer? Your blogs that I've read so far are entertaining, and full of information!

I have worked in LTC, sub-acute and now psych. I greatly enjoy psych but sometimes miss the some of the other aspects of nursing that psych does not involve. Good luck to you!
