What field of nursing are you interested into going into?

Published

I always wondered what fields of nursing most pre-nursing students were interested in. Most of the time, I hear ER or CRNA because they make the most money. Personally, I am more interested in the N.I.C.U and labor and delivery. What area of nursing are you interested in and why?

This is going to be my second career and I've been a volunteer EMT for 25 years. Some sort of emergency care like medivac or air ambulance would be cool. I've also been a cancer patient so oncology I would not rule out.

How do you become a volunteer EMT? I would be very interested in doing that. I think emergency experience would definatly beat-out volunteering in a hospital gift shop and waiting for the right nurse/doctor/HR to walk along and hear my pleas for a job.

Specializes in Geriatric (the best!).

I would love to do geriatric! There will be lots of needs for that :)

 zzzzZZZZzzzz - huh? Hah? Oh!

Sorry - 3 a.m. here!

As for me - well, looks like I'm going to be taking the long way. CNA -> LVN -> RN, primarily so I can get (a) experience, and (b) moolah! Far as interest, well for me it's just one thing - hospice. It's a very special part of the nursing field, where you work not only with the patients, but their families as well. Having been through the process of losing a loved one recently, I feel that my having "been there" gives me a slightly different "take" on the field; here, it's not so much about sending them home so much as making their final months more meaningful and fulfilling. And, when they've left this existence behind, to help their loved ones to heal from their loss as well. My :redbeathe really goes out to these folks.

Other than hospice - working with the elderly has it's own appeal as well, and frankly just about any field has something good about it. About the only area I'd likely stay away from would be working with moms & kids - not so much because I have a problem with either one (let's face it, at family gatherings I'm invariably the one under a pile of young'uns - moms tend to appreciate me 'cause I'll keep the kids entertained as well as keeping an eye on 'em) but more because of the potential issues pertaining to perceived impropriety.

I love the idea of someone being so interested in hospice. It can picture it being a difficult field to work in and can see professionals shying away from the field due to the heart ache so it is so nice to someone who has the compassion to be there for the patient and the family when they need it the most.

My dream is to work in the N.I.C.U or Pediatrics! I plan on going all the way to get my masters as a Neonatal Practitioner :-) So many areas to go into, I wouldn't mind assisting with Labor and Delivery for the experience.

My dream is to work on the helicopter.

Despite the aforesaid comment about CRNA, thats exactly what I'm getting into nursing for. The money is great, although for what they do I still don't think any monetary value suffices. My primary reason for choosing anesthesia is because I'm fascinated with the way the body functions. I want a field that challenges my critical thinking skills. At my age I feel going to med school is a waste time, considering the debt I'll acquire and the time it will take to pay it off. As mentioned earlier the money is great, and anyone getting into anesthesia shouldn't have to apology as no one in healthcare is working for free.

I don't think anyone should apologize for wanting to be a CRNA. It sounds like a long, hard road to get there. I don't believe in dream crushing but if someone struggles in pre-reqs, struggles in nursing school and then their only job interest is CRNA due to the money, then there might be easier paths to obtain the type of money.

I think surgery is fascinating but not sure I'd be the CRNA type. I make 6 figures in a non-nursing job now so going into nursing definitely isn't about the money.

Flight Nurse is an awesome career to go into!

Pediatrics for me! :)

I am very itnerested in actually getting into labor and delivery, or with Pediatrics. But at the beginning i would like ER just because i will gain a lot of experience.

Well yeah, if you're struggling in pre-reqs and in nursing school, then either you gotta find a way to get the material or reevalute your goals. Anesthesia is prolly the only field in nursing I'm interested in as of now. I work in a hospital and nothing appeals to me. I'm not saying something else wont peak my interest in nursing school, but for right now its anesthesia. If not anesthesia I would be a PA in cards.

My dream is to become a school nurse after I get enough experience! I used to be the "always sick kid" in school and I was always inspired by how kind and patient school nurses are. Also love to help kids :)

Before that though, I'd like to try a lot of kinds of nursing... One of the reasons I'm trying to get into nursing school is the sheer amount of different things to learn and the variety of jobs to do.
