What are your favorite meals/snacks for work?

Nurses General Nursing

Hi friends! I am a relatively new nurse. Now that I'm starting to get my feet under me at work, I'm turning my attention toward being more healthy. It's hard - sometimes I can't eat until 11 hrs into my shift and then I pig out when I'm home. I want to start packing multiple clean and healthy snacks/meals that I can eat throughout my shift....instead of the cookies and candy that's always lurking around the breakroom!

So I'd love to know - what clean, healthy filling snacks and meals work for you? Also what is a good packable breakfast I could have to keep me filled up in the morning? Thank you!!

Vodka.... Just kidding

Jello shots are easy to transport and store. :)

Thank you so much!!! I am absolutely inspired to snack healthy. The last few days at work I ate smaller snacks more often during the shift and felt so much better at the end. I really appreciate the healthy ideas!

When I did 12-hour shift work I ate salads with grilled chicken, deviled eggs, cheese sticks, roast beef cold cuts, cottage cheese, and baked chicken drumsticks.

My workplace diet was purposefully designed to be high-protein, moderate fat and low in CHO. Due to insulin resistance, I'll be ravenously hungry if my carb intake is too high. However, protein and fats are filling and satiating.

Frozen chicken tenders and baby spinach. I nuke the tenders and make a yummy salad. That, and protein shakes. Sometimes I only have time to drink my meal at work.

ANYTHING! During a long shift you would seriously want to hug the person that brought in the about to expire and nearly stale pretzel chips they got on sale for 25 cents at the bent and dent! You might even hate pretzel chips but during these moment its like eating gold! One thing is for certain, nothing lasts on the break room table for more than a day. Whatever it is, it will generally be picked clean within 24 hours!

On a non walking dead scavenger style day, peanut butter clif bars, deer sticks and cheese, smoked deer bologna, anything with mainly a protein base, carbs only make you sleepy!

smoothie that includes a protein power (meal replacement powder). Hummus with pretzel thins or veggies. I know a nurse who eats a yogurt or small soup before leaving work so she won't overeat when she gets home.

Mmmmm...deer sticks!! Love me some deer sticks! Never had deer bologna, but sounds better than Oscar Meyer

My new favorite smoothie (if you have a high end blender):

1/2 H20

1/2 Granny Smith apple

1/2 peeled red grapefruit

1 mini banana, or 1/4 standard banana

Small handful of blue grapes or frozen blueberries

1 cup fresh greens

4-6 ice cubes

If you want sweeter but still no added sugar, you can sub peeled clementines for the grapefruit, Fuji or Red Delicious apple for Granny Smith, and add more banana and/or a handful of frozen pineapple/mango/blueberries. I like tart, but I make this version for my kids who aren't watching carbs. Even my picky ones drink it up

As an avid hunter, deer meat is a steady part of our diet. We eat venison at least once a week in various forms. Deer bologna is similar to the sticks, we also smoke it for the flavor. Its very good. Too bad you arent closer, Ide hook you up with some!

Baked chicken, rice and beans and plantain.

Greek yogurt with Chia seeds, almonds, cashews, cheddar cheese slices, apples, bananas, Kashi granola bars. I eat 2 scrambled eggs before work, then have the yogurt with chia around 10-11, which helps me stay full until 2 or 3 if necessary. The rest of the snacks PRN after lunch.
