Just saw a thread from a fairly distressed RN who fears losing her first nursing job. The very first response was from someone who stated "while I am not a nurse, I think ...."
It made me stop and think - I wonder what draws non-nurse, non-medical people here? And to give advice? I can't imagine being interested enough in an engineering forum, for example, to hang out on it, let alone offer advice in an area in which I have no experience or training.
Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with anyone posting on any forum. I just find it curious. Perhaps my worldview is too limited and I need to expand my Internet browsing beyond AN.com?
Who is this Boratz fellow? Does he speak Jive?
you kill me.....! and I do speak Jive!

I didn't read the thread that you're referencing. I'm making general observations. If a nurse has a nursing situation & is asking for other nurses' perspectives, that's what she's seeking. She doesn't need/want non-nursing input because it's not relevant.
Non-nurses aren't necessarily unwelcome. They just don't have the perspective of a nurse regarding nursing situations.
I have to agree. Its not being mean, rude or unkind. This is a forum for ALLNURSES. I know when I post I am looking to interact with fellow nurses.
Oh NOOOO...you're making this MUCH more interesting...it's keeping the fans around...
Only trouble is, sometimes the more interesting the thread, the more likely it is to get closed down because it's "run its course". Which is too bad, considering blowing off steam is vital to the person blowing and entertaining to the person downwind :)

I believe I stated that I recognized that this was the nature of the board. I was merely expressing what my preference would be. I never suggested there should be any violation of the privacy of the members.
Sigh...I think it's time to find another thread to read.
But...but...I'm not an ER nurse! Would I be welcome there? I couldn't give useful advice to ER nurses!
:) Come work at my hospital. Rural nurses have to be "Jack of all trades; master of none". (ER, L&D, Surgical, Wound Care, Med-Surg, etc.).

I'm a firm believer in having some times of blowing off some steam to divert folks from getting so P.O.'d in the midst of a thread that is headed towards conflagration. It helps to laugh and RNsRWe's posts were hilarious and it helped to laugh. . . . . .but you are right. That usually causes some to complain about veering off-topic and the thread can get closed.
As to the OP's question, Google is definitely one of the ways folks end up here . . searching for a medical/nursing question usually points them here.
I came as a new nurse from a recommendation from another nurse who funnily enough doesn't come here anymore.
