I currently have my BA. However my GPA in college was a 2.5. After some thought I decided that what I wanted have a career in wasn't for me. I discovered nursing. Here's my dilemma. I plan on applying to nursing school this fall. My plan is to obtain a ADN. Then I realized I could just go for my BSN Accelarated Degree. I just found out though that 2 of the schools that offers the BSN program you must have a minimum of a C+ in pre-req sciences courses to get it. I got a C in A&P I. I'm currently taking A&P II. Honestly, knowing that I have a C, should I apply anyway to the schools that require a C+?
Does anyone know anyone that's ever gotten accepted in nursing school with a grade lower than what the school requires?
My back plan is to still apply to the community colleges which would accept my C. But if I can apply to someone that would look past my C in lieu of a C+ , I'm aiming for it.
Please advise!!

At my school, you cannot even apply unless you achieve the minimum grade. They have requirements for a reason. I would recommend either repeating the class or applying to the school with the lower standards, even if it means an ADN program. Most universities have an accelerated program for RNs, so going back wouldn't be hard.

Getting into nursing school is so competitive that I would say you might as well retake it now. Chances are your competition will have very high GPAs. Going for an ADN is just as difficult..at least around here..so I am not sure if those schools have "lower standards" as the previous poster mentioned. I have a BA and am applying to an ADN school and without almost a 4.0 you can't get in.

I would try to retake the class again to show that you can improve your score.
On a side note, never be too discouraged to try anything, including applying to nursing school regardless of how low you might think your gpa is! Anything is possible. And remember, statistically speaking, 100% of the shots you don't take never go in!
Good luck.

If the school has a formal, written policy of what the grade must be, then yes, you would need to retake the course in order to apply and have your GPA competitive.

Check your local community colleges.
I had below a 2.5 in my BE-EE degree. What I did was enrolled at my local community college and took the pre-reqs. I have a 3.7 in pre-reqs and obtained an excellent score on the NAT. Because my school only uses the pre-reqs and NAT scores, there is no doubt that I will be accepted to start NS in May!
You should retake the A&P I to improve your chances...and kick butt on that A&P II.
Initially, I wanted to do the accelerated BSN as well, but I would never have been accepted! This is a different route. You get an RN anyway, just with an ASN/ADN instead. Then, because you already have a bachelors, you follow up your RN with an RN-MSN program!
You can do it!
Thanks everyone. I agree I am going to retake A&P I this summer. Considering I did come from a different side of the spectrum (initially I was on the law school path) and this being my first science course in years, I'm happy I got a C, but I want better in order to get where I need to be in Nursing school. Thanks for the support and encouragement!!
Are any of you taking A&P II? How are you liking it so far?
Good luck to you.
I am a total fool for school so I loved both A&P I & II. But I love everything, even chemistry.

you can do whatever you put your mind to :) If you do not get accepted you can always retake classes. I know that the Science classes are the most important! Also some community classes have fast track classes that you can take and there like 4-6 weeks some 8. Its intense but you can do it if you motivate yourself! Good luck :)

You should check the school you're applying for and the school you attended (school where you got a C in A&P). Usually, not every school go by the +/- grading system. Do both of these schools (the one you're applying for, and the one you got a C in) go by the +/- grading policy?
My school did the whole +/- on grades, but didn't necessarily have A-, B+, B-, etc. on the nursing application because different people from different schools (that doesn't do +/-) would apply. So then, they just left the nursing application to A, B, C grades.
Maybe the school meant that if you took the class there (school you wanted to apply for), that you needed a C+ but not necessarily a C+ if you took the class elsewhere?
I don't know if I confused you.. but if I did, let me know. I'll be more than happy to rephrase some wordings for you.
But anyway, good luck!

Retake it. Some schools, like mine, will not even consider your application if it is below the minimum, and you really need to know that stuff for your nursing courses.

I'm not sure what YOUR A&P is like, but my A&P1 was hellish. I was lucky enough to take a 1 credit Medical Terminology class beforehand and it helped me tremendously! I hadn't taken a college course since I gradumutated waaaay back in '97....so it was a bit of an adjustment, especially with all the youngsters....they need to BAN cellphones in college, too, by the way!!!
Anyway, A&P 2 is much harder for me, since it's a lot more DETAIL oriented. Lotsa little fine points and WAAAAAY too much information to take in. I suggest you check out ratemyprofessor.com to see what other people are saying about you're next potential professor....ignore the haters!!! Don't miss class, for any reason, especially labs, never be late, ASK QUESTIONS and for you own sake, do the freakin' extra credit if given a chance! I'm half retarded and the last person who WANTS to study (unlike miss NOVARN!) and I managed an A....if I can do it.....ANYONE can do it!!!!! Good luck! - Jim
