What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

No, your logic is flawed.

Flawed in many way, but once again, I'll go for the low hanging fruit

According to the plaintiffs of the lawsuit, the guy defending the indefensible got the money to do so by scamming others.

No kidding? He was another millionaire that made his money by fleecing the working class? And then he was going to spend some of that  ill gotten money defending the indefensible Trump sychophant who was busily trying to fool the American people to benefit Trump (in part using Russian propaganda)? Instead of giving it back to the people he scammed?

So one wealthy conman spending his corrupt money to defend another wealthy (but indefensible) conman isn't logical evidence that the wealthy should be taxed more?  Trump supporters likely think those wealthy folks should pay lower taxes and have more money for shenanigans. Trump suggested he will lower their taxes again.

Trumpian logic is that the wealthy should pay less in taxes, regardless of how corrupt the method of acquisition of wealth.  Do you suppose the wealthy conman paid any income taxes on his illegal gains before he donated to the indefensible Giuliani defense fund?

The conservative politicians who are fleeing the republican party are sometimes very forthcoming and honest about the lunacy and dishonesty in the crazy caucus that currently controls their politics. Buck had a clear rebuttal to McCarthy's notion that MTG is a serious legislator.

"My experience with Marjorie is, people have talked to her about not filing articles of impeachment on President Biden before he was sworn into office, on not filing articles of impeachment that were groundless made on other individuals in the Biden administration,” he told Erin Burnett in a CNN interview Monday.

"And she was never moved by that. She was always focused on her social media account,” Buck continued. "And Moscow Marjorie is focused now on this Ukraine issue and getting her talking points from the Kremlin and making sure that she is popular and she is getting a lot of coverage.”

Her gerrymandered district gets what they asked for; shameless attention seeking, crazy commentary, and little legislative effort that would benefit them.  MTG represents the Trump era of conmen, grifters and charlatans well.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. Chairman Stephen Hemsley and three senior executives netted a combined $101.5 million from stock sales made over four months leading up to when the public became aware of a federal antitrust investigation.

The sales occurred between Oct. 16, a week after the largest health insurer in the US reportedly received notice of the Justice Department probe, and Feb. 26, the day before Bloomberg News and others published stories about the investigation. The stock dropped after the investigation was widely reported.

Hemsley made tens of millions of dollars in wages and compensation from UHC until he stepped down in 2017. For a spell, he was considered one of the highest paid executives on the country.  It's so typical that he would use his inside knowledge to protect his wealth that was tied up in stock that he knew was going to take a hit.  He sits on the national board for the BSA, as an interesting side note.

The Bible belt seems to have a good lead in divorce rates.  That seems out of synch with their messaging.  Many of those same states also enjoy some of the highest child poverty rates and highest maternal morbidity and mortality rates.

What does this story have to do with how much taxes the wealthy pay?

Perhaps the part about the $0 real estate purchase .  How does one evaluate property taxes when the buyer pays $0?

Ummm...property tax assessment and payment isn't related to the sale or transfer of a property.

Besides, TMB is suggesting the wealthy pay more taxes because some of them have too much money and do unscrupulous things with it.  Do you agree this is a good reason for the wealthy to pay more taxes?

Depends on what you qualify as "wealthy."  People with an income over $609,000 plus are in the highest tax bracket of 37%.  That doesn't mean they actually pay that amount.  Jeff Bezos paid a true tax rate of .98%.

Bezos, chief executive of Amazon and the owner of The Washington Post, paid $973 million in taxes on $4.22 billion in income, as his wealth soared by $99 billion, resulting in a 0.98 percent "true tax rate.”

Wealthiest Americans, including Bezos, Musk pay little in taxes, IR...

I am only familiar with NY and Michigan but our property taxes are based on the selling price of the house.  So yeah, when a person buys a house for $0, that's a problem for the town.  Especially for the Trump properties in NYC.  Banks tolerated him because they were afraid to say no to such a wealthy client but they had to know they were on shaky ground.  The irony of Trump proclaiming that he can shoot someone on 5th Ave. and get away with it, is that if a NY'er shot Trump on 5th Ave., no jury would convict!

People who have been convinced that our American institutions are not to be trusted, like Trump tells them consider tax evasion brave.

Maybe you could tell us why the wealthiest individuals and corporations should pay a lower tax rate than the working class.  Give us a good reason.  Explain how the decrease in the tax rates for the wealthiest has benefited We the People, if you can. The income inequality that follows the failed Trickle Down ideology is toxic to our society and I'll be interested in your take on how we remedy that.

Yeah, when people have so much money that they feel comfortable throwing it toward destructive and dangerous pursuits, they won't really be hurt by revisiting an earlier tax rate.

I think lots of Republicans in lots of positions of authority or influence are afraid of Trump and his angry cult.
