What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Sometime in the past year I read that Bolsonaro had already adopted tRump's tactics nearly verbatim, as an approach to his election. Good Grief!

His son has already claimed fraud before the election...that sounds familiar.  I was listening to BBC today and his supporters talking about "fake news"...that sounds familiar......apparently there are armed people ready for an uprising should he lose...that sounds familiar.

Those new Jim Crow laws not working so well.

"The president was among many Democrats last year who criticized Georgia’s Republican-passed Election Integrity Act as a right-wing attempt to suppress Black votes. In October 2021, Biden described the law as "Jim Crow in the 21st Century." In January of this year, the president described the law as "Jim Crow 2.0."

"After one full week of in-person early voting in Georgia, nearly 838,000 people have already cast their ballots in an election that is expected to shatter midterm records.

According to an analysis of absentee data from the secretary of state's office, turnout is nearly 60% higher than the same point in time in the 2018 general election, thanks in part to record voter interest and the increasing shift in voters utilizing the state's three-week early voting period.

Looking at the demographics of Georgia's voters so far, the electorate is older and Blacker than this time in previous elections, as tightly contested races for U.S. Senate, governor and other statewide offices is driving voter enthusiasm."

I think it's probably Republicans whom are having regrets.  What their actions did was mobilize the African American community and it backfired in their face.

I think a lot of it is Abrams.

Black voters, who typically vote for Democrats, broke records in terms of participation every day last week, exceeding both 2018 and 2020, according to state data. The turnout also featured an unusually high percentage of first-time Georgia voters, the kind of low-propensity voters Abrams has pushed for years to get to the polls, said Charles Bullock, a political science professor at the University of Georgia.

I don't know, what do you think might have inspired this fellow?

While I realized it's possible that he is in fact, to use your term, a MAGAphile, rather than baseless speculation why don't we wait until we know for certain.

Or, maybe Biden's lying and false rhetoric motivated them.

Arizona’s governor is stacking shipping containers along the border and defying a federal request to remove them

Stacked shipping containers are filling four border gaps so farDucey, a Republican, issued an executive order in August telling the state’s Department of Emergency and Military Affairs to use shipping containers to fill in gaps along the border. The first project: closing a 1,000-foot gap near Yuma, Arizona.

“Arizona has had enough,” he said at the time. “We can’t wait any longer.”

The 8,800-pound, 9-by-40-feet containers stand about 22 feet tall when stacked, welded together and topped with four feet of razor wire, the governor’s office said, while border fencing built during the Trump administration is about 30 feet high

and just in time for the mid-terms.  The people in Montana must be relieved.

Snark aside, arrests are at all time high.  2.4 million seems unfathomable to me.

There were nearly 2.4 million migrant arrests at the nation’s southwestern border this fiscal year — the highest number ever recorded, according to U.S. Border Patrol data released this week.

Officials arrested 227,000 migrants in September, a 11% increase compared with August, the third-highest number recorded this year along the U.S.-Mexico border after May and April.

Migrant arrests, or encounters, for the year were 37% higher than last year, and more than two times the number recorded in 2019. (There were about 458,000 migrant encounters recorded in 2020, but that number was likely affected by the global pandemic.)

I think right wing rhetoric and animus centered on Pelosi is the problem.  I think republican House candidates running against Pelosi, with animus, rather than running against their actual opponents is the problem.

I think that the distinctly republican notion that violence may be necessary to forward conservative political thinking in this country is the problem.

I also think that we know for certain that the attacker is far down that right wing rabbit hole and that's why he was looking to harm the SOTH. The fellow's social media fingerprint was a dead giveaway.

Eh, he started this in August.  He's not up for re election right now.  Even if he was, or if it's to help others in midterms,  it would only help if independents also think it's a good idea.  It seems CNN is only reporting on it because the feds are making a stink of it.  Not because he's seeking publicity over it.

And, it's the Arizona border, not Montana.  Big difference!

Yes. The numbers are staggering.

It sounds like this guy had mental health, and possibly drug issues, that went way back before his interest in right wing ideology.
