What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

The U.S. budget deficit was sliced in half for fiscal 2022, the biggest drop in history following two years of huge Covid-related spending.

Though still large in historical terms, the budget shortfall declined to $1.375 trillion, compared to the 2021 deficit of $2.776 trillion.

The decline would have been steeper had it not been for the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness program. Education spending totaled $639.4 billion for the fiscal year, $408 billion higher than estimated.

The 2022 fiscal year saw $4.896 trillion in revenue against $6.272 trillion in outlays. The outlays number represented about a $550 billion decline in spending but an $850 billion increase in revenue. The revenue total is by far the highest ever for the U.S. government.

We were talking about the deficit earlier.  These numbers are staggering to me.

"But crucially, both policy shifts framed these crises, however unintentionally, as things the Biden administration sought — more illegal immigration and higher gas prices, just what liberals always want! And then instead of a dramatic attempt at reframing, prioritizing domestic energy and border enforcement, the Biden White House fiddled with optics and looked for temporary fixes: handing Kamala Harris the border portfolio, turning the dials on the strategic petroleum reserve and generally confirming the public’s existing bias that if you want a party to take immigration enforcement and oil production seriously, you should vote Republican."

Yeah I want more illegal immigration and higher gas prices.  It's the liberal wish list.  What could possibly happen at the mid terms?

I believe you.  However, there are those further left of you who do.

Perhaps but I've never heard that idea, but I don't read left wing rhetoric.

To me it makes zero sense for the Biden administration, whom the article is talking about, to want more illegal immigrants and high gas prices when clearly these issues are costing the mid-term elections.   The writer could have left out that rhetoric to make the point.  I don't have any more free views of the NYT but if I'd have clicked it on I would have probably stopped there.

I would tolerate the idea, as congressperson Steve Scalise pointed out on Fox News, that Biden created record high gas prices and the worst border crisis in history (I don't think Biden is fully responsible for creating these problems, but it is happening) than "it's just what the liberals want".

Countries face a pick your poison cup:  inflation or recession.

The UK is a mess.

Right now in the U.S., the government's doing a bit of both: Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is raising interest rates and the White House is also doing what it can to keep fuel prices low, cancel student debt, and get aid out to people in various ways. Right now, inflation in the U.S. isn't spiraling and the economy is looking fairly solid. But if that changes, which it could very quickly, we could find ourselves picking our poison and feeling the consequences of it for decades to come.

While DeSantis has been busy playing footsie with actual neo-Nazis, Florida’s insurance providers are fleeing the state faster than New Yorkers under Cuomo. I, for one, love owning the libs by getting dropped from my insurance carrier because it was “declared insolvent.”

On top of this, Florida is literally “the least affordable state in the country.” At the same time, we also have the most vacant homes and the third largest homeless population. In other words, Florida is becoming its worst nightmare, Sean Hannity’s version of California.

I think that most of us have made up our mind here in Florida who to vote and that DeSantis will win a 2nd term.  But I did find this endorsement somewhat amusing in how it's presented but also agree with most of it.  This caught my attention because after my insurance rate going up $900 a year my carrier was declared insolvent and I had to scramble for homeowners/hurricane insurance.

I've talk before about the public enemy:  Drag Queens

In Florida the governor is all about "parental choice" when it comes to things like masks, book banning, vaccines, etc.   Apparently for some people this does not include the choice to bring your children to Drag Queen Story Hour and they needed to cancel a reading due to threats.

Re: Drag Queen Story Hour:  Just let the kiddies view the American version of The Bird Cage, with Robin Williams. I think the original French film is much better, but the kids can better relate to Robin Williams. Lotta laughs, doncha know. (Oh dear, something more for deSatanis to shake his head about the movie and BAN it!)

OMG this is intense. You know I never actually thought about how I would feel about this. On one hand it’s just a volunteer taking time out to give back to children by reading a story  which is always admirable, but then children are inquisitive so then there’s the part of would they ask about the story or the volunteer being in drag, would they even notice IDK.  It’s just not black and white and I understand the parents concerns but weapons, absolutely uncalled for, never a good outcome when there are children around. Just sad

This guy is in no way fit to serve 6 years as a US Senator.  His priority should be getting himself well.

"Fetterman was aided by a closed captioning system throughout the debate to help him understand the moderators’ questions, but he still struggled at times to form clear sentences.

Republican critics were quick to pounce on Fetterman’s performance, pointing out that he opened the debate with “Hi, goodnight everybody.”

Fetterman particularly struggled to answer a question about whether he supported fracking. Pressed on how he squared his past comments in 2018 in which he voiced opposition to the practice with his current support for it, Fetterman offered a halting response.

“I..I do support fracking…and…I don’t, I don’t…I support fracking and I stand and I do support fracking,” he said, in a moment that went viral."
