What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

New policy for Venezuelans who enter US illegally

Venezuelans who enter US illegally at southern border points of entry will be returned to Mexico: DHS

Venezuelans who enter the U.S. illegally at ports of entry along the southern border will be returned to Mexico under the authority of Title 42, a public health statute invoked at the start of the pandemic by the Trump administration that allows for the rapid expulsion of migrants, senior Biden administration officials said Wednesday....

The agency also announced it will bring 24,000 Venezuelan nationals to the U.S. as part of a new policy aimed at encouraging lawful entries through airports into the interior of the U.S.

Citing the large increase in Venezuelan nationals attempting to cross the southern border, the DHS says Venezuelans will need a sponsor in the United States to enter the country legally. That can be done online, a senior administration official told reporters on a conference call Wednesday night.

"This program is meant and is intended to address particular acute issues that we're facing at the border and to provide an opportunity for vulnerable Venezuelans to seek means of entering the United States in a lawful way in the interior without showing up at the southern border," a senior administration official said.

Venezuelans who are illegally the United States currently will not be affected by this announcement, only those who are at the southern border after the announcement was made.

They did not go into specifics as to why they capped the program at 24,000....

Kind of strange plea for a peaceful protest in which people were invited into the Capitol.

It was Lachlan Rutledge’s sixth birthday, but as he mustered a laborious breath and blew out one candle, it was his mother who made a wish: for a pediatric hospital bed in northeast Oklahoma.

The kindergartner has a connective tissue disorder, severe allergies and asthma. Those conditions repeatedly landed him in the pediatric intensive care unit at Ascension St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, with collapsed veins and oxygen levels so low, he was unresponsive to his mother’s voice.

But in April the hospital closed its children’s floor to make room for more adult beds. So on a September morning, after coming down with Covid for the fourth time and with what looked like bilateral pneumonia, Lachlan was struggling to breathe in an overcrowded emergency room at the Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis — the only remaining inpatient pediatric option in Tulsa.

Two men opened fire on Russian soldiers at a training camp in the Belgorod region on Saturday, killing 11 and wounding 15, before being killed themselves, according to Russian state-run news outlets.

The Russian Defense Ministry called the episode a terrorist attack, according to the state media outlets RIA Novosti and TASS, which quoted a ministry statement.

The account of the shootings could not be verified independently.

The statement from the ministry said the two men were from an ex-Soviet nation and had fired on other soldiers during target practice at a firing range, RIA Novosti reported.

It was not immediately clear if the attackers were volunteer soldiers themselves involved in the training. Earlier reports suggested they were volunteers.

It is an easy assumption that Putin's draft is not going well.  We hear interesting stories from family in country. So far they are safe.

Interesting. I like to read and answer the poll questions myself. Here's some examples:

Quote

The Biden administration has subsidized electric cars,
subsidized college loans and pardoned marijuana offenders. They also raised corporate taxes and added 87,000 IRS agents. Does this appeal to you as
a program or not appeal to you?

Republicans want to close the border to illegal crossings, increase incarceration of criminals, reduce or freeze government spending. Does this appeal to you as a program or not appeal to you?

Quote

President Biden recently cancelled up to $20,000 of student debt for couples making up to $250,000, costing an estimated $400 billion, by an
executive order. Do you…?

Do you think it was right or wrong for President Biden to spend over $400 billion on student loan forgiveness
without authorization by Congress?

Interesting poll.

I went straight to the poll and skipped what the Daily Wire had to say.

It was interesting to see the 50/50 spilt on abortion and that most people support student loan forgiveness (except when you add the caveat of him doing with without congress) and the marijuana pardons even though most understand it was a mid-term election stunt.

Interesting too that immigration is a top 3 concern of voters.  How this affects the day to day lives of people in Iowa being concerned about it is a mystery to me.

Still Republicans are right to focus on the economy, crime and the border.  They are doing a good job.

All in all the survey has Biden kind of holding steady in approval ratings (not good though), but bearing the brunt of inflation and high gas prices, and Republicans making headway in convincing voters that they will handle these issues better.  Like Obama's mid-term some bitter pills are going to have to be swallowed.

I'm glad DeSantis gaining on Trump but still "if election was held today" Trump would win.  Also the percentage of people still believing the election to be stolen is boggling.  It should be maybe 1 or 2% not 30%.

Also in a few imaginary matchups it seems the "unsure" will decide the ultimate winner.

As I said, interesting poll. The questions they asked.  The responses.  The percentages.  Interesting.

We are simultaneously trying to save for retirement, pay for college and manage all the things that growing kids need on a paycheck being eaten away by inflation. We worry that a recession is going to wreck our financial plans or that taxes will have to go up — our taxes, mostly — to cover ballooning budget deficits. People who are already anxious and grumpy are probably the least likely to take bad economic news in stride. And while many of us may be ideologically outraged over the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, abortion is mostly no longer an issue that affects our own reproductive choices.

Also, we remember — if a bit vaguely — all the 20th-century horrors that now seem to be in reruns. (We remember reruns.) We remember how inflation and rampant crime and the threat of nuclear war loomed over our childhood. We are displeased to find these threats looming over our own children, too.

We are a charitable generation, we Xers, so perhaps we understand, at some level, that this is not all Joe Biden’s fault. The president did not single-handedly cause the inflation that is scourging almost the entire rich world, and he is not sneaking out of the White House at 3 a.m. to steal cars. But we are too tired to quibble about responsibility. We are a practical generation, remember; if someone can’t fix the problem, we’ll fire them and hire someone else.

It's interesting that people will vote for Republicans even though Republicans don't actually have a policy plan... they have a few general ideas written down that aren't actually a formal platform.  They are largely running on partisan grievance and election security fear, right?
