What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Life is difficult and challenging in Alaska at best.  This will be a tough Winter.

Sad.

Side note.  Never heard of a "subsistence use cabin" before.  Hope those miners at least found some gold.

Blue-chip stocks plunged to their lowest level since 2020 on Friday, continuing a bad slump that began in August as investors try to grapple with economic head winds in the United States and around the world that are only likely to worsen.

I get WP through a friend but if you can't view it, the first paragraph says enough.

I've always said that I had plenty of time to recover from 2008's crash but that if it happened again, I'll never retire.  Here I am 63 years old seeing my hopes dashed after such a good meeting last year with my financial advisor.  Time will tell.

I made the comment on the WP facebook post of the above article "Well deserved Sir Elton. The world is a better place because of you." and I mean it. The hundreds of millions his charity has raised changed lives and enlightened the world.

Anyway, I got this response:   "senile elites giving rich elites participation awards = the democrat way"

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I just can't with these people.

Not sure if he was dazed and/or confused.  But I thought the NYT headline was interesting.  They just can't not mention Trump.

Oh sure, much is being made about the return of performances of some celebrities that refused during the Trump years.

John declined Trump's invitation to perform at his inauguration.  Granted it's off topic in relation to him performing for Biden but perhaps worthy to be noted.

To be fair there was the pandemic during some of Trump's times so performances did come to a stop.

How a Hospital Chain Used a Poor Neighborhood to Turn Huge Profits https://nyti.ms/3fhuYnJ

Quote

More than half of all hospitals in the United States are set up as nonprofits, a designation that allows them to make money but avoid paying taxes. Although BON Secours has taken a financial hit this year like many other hospital systems, the chain made nearly $1 billion in profit last year at its 50 hospitals in the United States and Ireland and was sitting on more than $9 billion in cash reserves. It avoids at least $440 million in federal, state and local taxes every year that it would otherwise have to pay, according to an analysis by the Lown Institute, a nonpartisan think tank.

In exchange for the tax breaks, the Internal Revenue Service requires nonprofit hospitals to provide a benefit to their communities. But an investigation by The New York Times found that many of the country’s largest nonprofit hospital systems have drifted far from their charitable roots. The hospitals operate like for-profit companies, fixating on revenue targets and expansions into affluent suburbs.

Many of these hospitals have for years slashed staffing levels, leaving them unprepared for a flood of severely ill Covid-19 patients. Others, borrowing tricks from business consultants, have trained staff to squeeze payments from poor patients who should be eligible for free care.

Our health system is a slow but profitable failure when health outcomes are measured.

The market’s resounding rejection of the new British government’s plans for tax cuts and borrowing continued Monday as the pound briefly fell to its weakest level against the U.S. dollar on record.

After a historically bad day on Friday, the British currency plunged as low as $1.035 in the early hours of Monday morning, before recovering to about $1.08, down 0.5 percent for the day. It also weakened slightly against the euro.

On Monday, prices for British government bonds plummeted, and yields surged, sending borrowing costs to new highs. The 10-year yield, which influences mortgages, business loans and other types of debt, hit its highest level in more than a decade. It traded at around 4.15 percent on Monday, double where it was a month and a half ago.

As traders dumped British assets, analysts have said the government’s plan to quickly grow the economy through deregulation and tax cuts, which will require tens of billions of pounds in additional borrowing at a time of rising interest rates and high inflation, was a gamble.

Despite the breadth of new measures, the government did not have the Office for Budget Responsibility, an independent watchdog, assess the polices and provide updated economic and fiscal forecasts.

“It was perhaps the lack of reassurances about fiscal responsibility that tipped the market over the edge,” said Jane Foley, a strategist at Rabobank.

I wonder why they didn't have their trickle down strategies analyzed?

Tweety,

hear that St. Pettersberg hospitals, Tampa area SNF/Alfs are evacuating as last direct Hurricane to hit Tampa was over 100 years ago. Please take care and have your car in parking garage to save it from flooding.  Hurricaine Ian up to 100+ miles/hr gusts, now stage 2.

Hurricane Ian, a ‘potential historic catastrophe,’ takes aim at Tampa Bay

Quote

Ian, a strengthening Category 2 hurricane as of 8 p.m. Monday, has steadied its course and is headed eastward through the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida, where the National Hurricane Center tracks it to approach the Pinellas County coast as a major hurricane by Wednesday night.

While the storm’s current track would put the eye’s landfall farther north, near the Nature Coast area, the National Weather Service on Monday put Tampa Bay under a hurricane warning for the first time since Hurricane Irma in 2017. Experts said Ian could bring up to a foot of rain and as much as 5 to 10 feet of storm surge as it lingers off the coast, which could make it one of Tampa Bay’s most dangerous hurricane threats ever....

DeSantis: Tampa Bay could be hit with hurricane

Yes.  Fortunately my hospital even though I can see the water of Tampa Bay where I work on the 6th floor, sits high up and can take patients.  One of the HCA hospitals and some of the nursing homes must evacuate.  Most of them are part of larger organizations in the area and their sister-facilities probably can handle it.  We did have to take some patient's from from a Kidred Hospital though.

Where I live is under a mandatory evacuation order at 7AM today and I'm making plans to go to my brother in law's in Tampa since I'm not working the storm and he lives inward in a safe zone.  But I'm not leaving today since it's going to hit until tomorrow night.

We haven't had a direct hit in over 100 years and have been spoiled and complacent, but people are taking it seriously.  My big concern would be the surge since I live across the street from a canal that connects to Tampa Bay which is just a couple of blocks away.

This morning's 5AM update is a bit unsettling because it's has it going right at my neighborhood which under the "3" in the picture below.   But it's still a ways away and it can still shift to the east more but either way it's going to be a mess with a surge.

Thanks for thinking of me.

Thanks.

I'm waiting on the 11:00 update.  Rumor has it that it's making a slight turn to the south.  Usually these paths change as they get closer.  Either way it's going to hit a densely populated area.
