What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

"Democrats want a do-over on “Defund the police.” But Americans aren’t dumb. They heard the left wing of the party demand defunding, and they saw the supposed centrists meekly go along under the guise of repurposing funding from police to social workers. Now they say they want to be tough on crime, and we are actually supposed to believe them? As the president might say, “C’mon, man!”

It's important for conservative leaning outlets distract from the current GOP calls to defund the FBI now that several of their political and social leaders are facing legal troubles and Trump has been caught ignoring laws and subpoenas to hoard federal secrets.

While some Democrats have joined calls for a radical shift in police policy, including a reduction in police budgets, top congressional Democrats and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden have not supported calls to "defund the police."

Around here there have been calls from activists groups not to defund but reallocate funds.  Funds have increased.

In true DeSantis fashion in his bill to go after protestors he included provisions banning defunding of the police.  It's being challenged in court in an ongoing suit.

It's very important for the right to protray the left and as anti police and "Dem Run Cities" being riddled with crime.  Yesterday or before Fox News websites top story was crime, I believe this time in St. Louis and had about six stories as their top news of the day about crime in dem run cities.

Back in 2020 and 2021 polls consistently showed people didn't want to defund the police.

But it is interesting that crime waves have occurred in the wake of defund the police and now it's "refund the police".  Can't blame the NY Post or conservatives for mocking it.

Twice is better than once in this case! Thank you.

I heard this on NPR's podcast today and couldn't believe my ears.  A felony??

I can't imagine the topic really comes up all that much that a professor is "promoting abortion or contraception" so it's baffling that this would even be an issue they felt would need to address.

But in classes, say a philosophy or history class a professor has to be neutral if the topic comes up or risk being arrested.

Off topic.  It kind of baffles me that people against abortion are also against helping women from getting pregnant in the first place.

The University of Idaho sent a warning to employees Friday that promoting abortion or contraception while on the job could be a felony — and stating the university will no longer make birth control available — multiple outlets report, citing state laws that prohibit public funds from being used on abortion and the advertisement of any contraceptive or abortion-related drugs.

It sounds like the conservative perspective is trying to even control speech as related to abortion.

Quote

The guidance, as published by Boise State Public Radio, states employees cannot promote abortion, perform an abortion, counsel in favor of abortion, refer patients for abortions, dispense abortion drugs, provide facilities for abortions, dispense emergency contraception (except in cases of rape), contract with abortion providers or advertise or promote “services for abortion or the prevention of conception.”

The university staff must be very careful about their speech when speaking to their female students about personal matters.

Doesn't it make you think about Atwood's book?

Maybe come up with an alternative word as a code for the "A"-word? (Wow, this whole censorship is over the concept is so weird!) I'll probably think of something to call it, may come by later to suggest a word or two.

Somehow I just don't believe that Congress will fix immigration issues when immigration is such a good campaign topic for the GOP. It's unfortunate because we do need the inflow of new citizens.
