What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

So, the NYT found a expert who disagreed with a expert who appeared on Carlson's show?  Shocker.  I wonder why the NYT cares so much about Tucker Carlson?

It certainly is feasible that the food supply chain is vulnerable.

It's estimated that nearly 400 million people rely on Ukraine food supplies which the Russians have disrupted.  Russian grain isn't getting out either due to sanctions.  It's a mess.

Tucker Carlson according to the NYT fuels extremism and fear.  Not sure what their obsession but Carlson is sometimes newsworthy.  He was spreading the lie that it was not Trump supporters on January 6th causing trouble but by anti-Trump foes.  He mentioned replacement theory many times, then back pedaled.

But like others before him, he knows the more outrageous he is with this "they are out to get you and control you" theories, the more views he gets and the more money he makes on his side projects.

He's from a wealthy background and makes about $35 million a year from Fox and is extremely popular with viewers. Apparently one of the highest paid hosts in the world.

Other news organizations cover him like they did the long forgotten and never talked about Rush Limbaugh and other outrageous people.

For me, even though there might be some truth in his shows, the fact that speculates in conspiracy will make me never watch him or listen to him ever.

I think when a huge amount of people hear speculation about things that aren't possibly true like Trump is doing currently with his encouragement of Q-Anon and that he won the election puts us on a course that can't possibly be good for the country.

And, about the agency the NYT expert works for:

Anyway, I wouldn't bet a beer one way or the other on which one is right.

We should all care about liars who spread propaganda (Russian or otherwise) to gullible American citizens.

I would bet a beer that lots of conservative FOX viewers would defend Tucker without an extra thought as to whether they should.

Re food supply:  My oldest son is insistent that their is a global food shortage partially due to Ukraine war and countries hoarding food for WW3 after watching mostly Youtube videos.  So he has amassed 4-6 mo. food supply.

While Chef son who orders food 2-3x week disputes this fact.   I keep shopping list and stockup during sales and seasonal change items -- like I have for past 45 yrs.  I bought 10 boxes Beef and Chicken stock as only $1.00 each and use several/month only to be told no room for them on basement shelves --go figure, so sit on my kitchen counter.

I've also thought about sticking up, but haven't ever made serious strides to doing so.

More than an actual shortage of food, I worry about something that keeps me from having access to food and/or my money, like a massive cyberattack that knocks out the grid.  I think I need to stock my basement with food (and TP) and bury cash or gold in the yard.

That is actually the reality in some countries.  China is hiding the fact that some banks are failing and people can't get to their money.  It's also happening in Sri Lanka and Lebanon.  We have a strong banking system and other countries put their money here because it's safe so that scenario might not be likely, but one like you said could.

‘A Crisis Coming’: The Twin Threats to American Democracy https://nyti.ms/3Ul6SbN

These are perilous times.

A couple of things, I’ll work backwards

First, the US IS transforming into something else more diverse to include all of its peoples and not just whites.  I don’t see an issue here besides the fact that this should have been done decades ago.

It is hard to call attention to widespread inequality in this country when many people are content to accept the status quo of their living wage.

All I can do is throw up my hands in regards to the recent policy changes yea, we groan and gripe but clearly they pulled it off.  I’m hopeful for handful of states that are understanding of the foolishness of this and standing their ground.

And the alleged election rigging. .. “no man is allowed to be judge in his own cause, because his interest would certainly bias his judgment, and, not improbably, corrupt his integrity”

A federal judge in Texas just ruled that requiring employers to provide coverage of HIV meds is unconstitutional. Go to npr.org - the article was published on Sept.7, 2022.

Not sure what I think about it yet. My first reaction was oh, goddess, it’s starting again. I was a staff nurse at a college health service in Boston during the middle 80s at the beginning of the epidemic. I went from there in ‘87 to the only dedicated HIV inpatient unit in New England and stayed until ‘98.

Whooping cough, Covid, measles, polio … all have all started popping up again since prevention, especially vaccines, is getting less accessible or utilized effectively. Trust me … you don’t want untreated HIV loose again. The butcher’s bill is growing exponentially. Something tells me that we going to be seeing some fancy cost shifting going on.

On the other hand, I’m not at all comfortable with having healthcare tied to employment or the government. I don’t think it’s fair to small businesses and it totally reeks for employees.

I think I might be a little confused here. Why shouldn’t the jobs health insurance pay for the HIV meds? They pay for everyone else’s meds. Or am I reading this wrong

I'll admit that I'm biased because as a boomer gay man that lived during a time when there was no treatment for HIV/AIDS or prevention and tens of thousands of young vibrant gay men my age died.

Also my attitudes for sex is not tied to a religious dogma.  I've always had a libertarian view in that consenting adults should be able to do what they want to include prostitution, Media, orgies, open marriages, hang from the ceiling upside down.  I don't care.  It has no affect on me what you care to do.  Like wise what I do isn't affecting your religious practices.

But I look it at like this.  A person goes to the doctor and has high cholesterol (not hereditary) but because he likes Taco Bell and McDonalds and there is no  hesitation, he gets the medication.  Yes he's asked to change his lifestyle some but he still gets the medication provided by an employer covered health plan to prevent a heart attack.  But what if I employed you and took you to court and said "it's against my morality to eat animals and to provide you with medication you got from eating animals and you need to follow my lifestyle which is a whole foods plant based diet to lower your cholesterol."

Vaccines were free to people that didn't social distance or wear a mask.

A young gay man that wants to be responsible and protect his health from a what still is a deadly and costly disease, and religious people name a disease a moral failing and lose their minds to the point they take it court.

I will admit that gay men probably are having a lot more sex with different people and multiple people again like we did in the 70's than your average heterosexual, monkey pox spread is showing that.   But so what?  Is that a moral failing.  It's only sex.

STDs like chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis, and trichomoniasis are preventable, but you don't see these organizations going to court to stop prevention and treatment.   You don't really hear much about the moral failing of young people having sex.  Health Departments even provide treatment and information for free.

I don't get it.  Oh wait.....

It amazes me that those who say "f-your feelings" are so offended by what I do in the privacy of my bedroom.  You're free too feel that way.  No problem with me.  Idf it is a against your religion, fine, but that's where it ends, f-your feelings is you want to take it court.

I do think that we are getting to an age where "religious freedom" is going to make it's mark.  It's no coincidence that Christianity is loosing it's place as the dominant religion at a time they want to legislate us.

I hear you Tweety and totally agree with you 1000 percent.

but know this. There is a difference between religion and living a Christ like life.  He had compassion for ALL!

The link doesn't work and besides I've used up any free views and can't read NYT anyway when I searched for it.  Can you elaborate what Tucker Carlson has said?

It is well known that disrupting "the bread basket of the world" which is Ukraine has had devastating effects on the world's food supply.  Russia can't deny that.

Same! I can’t read TMB’s  NYT articles either so I just wait for the synopsis.

I heard you should always have 5000 cash on hand but I’d never say this to anyone close to me. I watch the news and ID channel.

Wait you have gold? LOL.. I don’t know if I’d bury anything in the backyard. LOL
