What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Nikki Haley, or her social media manager need to do some fact-checking before tweeting:

https://www.newsweek.com/historians-correct-nikki-haley-after-george-washington-tweet-1569489

She tweeted: George Washington turned an army of ragtag troops into an unstoppable force that defeated the British & secured America's independence. As President, he oversaw the creation of our Constitution & showed the world what it looks like to govern by the people and for the people.

But the continental army was not unstoppable and Washington lost more battles than he won. He didn't become president until after the Constitution was created, because the office of president didn't even exist. And the phrase of government by the people and for the people was coined by Lincoln.

This is why history needs to be taught accurately.

Well she did mess up the years but I think I am more worried about the current (and hopefully not the next!) President who gets many many things mixed up.

But I do agree that History should be taught accurately including civics etc, seems like kids these days have little appreciation for the Country they live in and the people who have fought and died for their freedom.

She messed up how we elect a president, how the war was fought, and mangled a quote from another president. And she is a 51 year old woman, not exactly a kid.  I don't see how this applies to kids these days having little appreciation for a country that refuses to keep them safe from shooters.

Well I would say that the army was unstoppable since we (USA) won the war. I didn't take it that Haley was attributing the quote to Washington, just using it to make a point. How did she mess up how we elect a President, she messed up the dates. I obviously didn't mean she was a kid. I was agreeing that our schools should be teaching the basics. Kids are not even getting the basics like they should be IMO. And you are right that we are not keeping kids safe and not just from shooters but other things like human trafficking and drugs. Too bad that the Democrat policies are not doing that. I assume you mean gun control, but that is not going to fix it, we need people control (ie enforce the laws we already have).
Again, not so sure why you are so worried about her gaffe when Biden just continues to make gaffes and not protect the Country and he is the President!

How we fund education is a good topic that deserves discussion.  Here's a start.

States currently own the majority of the funding for public education.  The political leadership of each state basically determines that per child funding. More federal funding would balance the field. What do you think?

Is there a specific Biden gaffe that you'd like to compare?

We won the war because of our French allies.
I am concerned that a candidate for president has such a loose grasp of history and seemingly the constitution. My grandchildren attend a pubic school and are well versed in the basics. They are strong readers and excel in math and science. They are also kind and caring.
Yes, I am in favor of gun control. Gun owners should have control of their weapons and not shoot kids. Or anybody. My grandkid's school principal and her dog should not have been shot by her husband.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-russia-suspends-participation-last-remaining-nuclear-treaty-with-us-2023-02-21/

President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia was suspending its participation in the New START treaty with the United States that limits the two sides' strategic nuclear orificenals.

Putin stressed that Russia was not withdrawing from the treaty but the suspension further imperils the last remaining pillar of arms control between the United States and Russia, which between them hold nearly 90% of the world's nuclear warheards - enough to destroy the planet many times over.

"In this regard, I am forced to announce today that Russia is suspending its participation in the strategic offensive arms treaty," Putin told lawmakers towards the end of a major speech to parliament, nearly one year into the war in Ukraine.

Putin said Russia's nuclear energy company Rosatom must also ensure the country's readiness to test a nuclear weapon, if needed.

"Of course, we will not be the first to do this. But if the United States tests, then we will," he said. "No one must be under any dangerous illusions that global strategic parity can be destroyed."

Will some Americans also believe this propaganda?

The LDH article above was refreshing in the sense that someone out there is proposing rational educational policies.  I'm sure that some posters here will dismiss her for being a Democrat.  The poorest states often don't have enough choices.  However, let's look at Missouri as one to actually keep education in the 19th century.  It wasn't until 2018 that they raised the age of marriage to 16.  They also added that anyone 21 or older can't marry anyone under the age of 18 ( how progressive of them!).  They also, just weeks ago, voted down a ban on minors carrying weapons in public.  The only thing I can deduct from these facts is that they are OK with young children remaining in poverty (and the girls barefoot and pregnant) and don't mind paying the medical bills incurred during gang wars with automatic weapons and the trauma induced on the public by having to watch children carrying weapons almost anywhere (schools and churches are exempt).  Both of these policies just perpetuate the poverty in which these people live.  The circle of karma isn't going to be kind to residents of Missouri.  And that's only one state.  We know that per capita gun deaths are higher in states that are red and poor.  What lesson are we teaching our kids.  Stay alert and duck fast?

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg raised eyebrows on Tuesday when he refused to answer a reporter's questions about the crisis in East Palestine before oddly asking to snap a photo of the journalist.

Reporter Jennie Taer approached Buttigieg while he walked outside in Washington, D.C., identified herself as a journalist from the Daily Caller News Foundation and asked what he had to say to "the folks in Ohio, East Palestine who are suffering right now" in the aftermath of the toxic train derailment that leaked dangerous chemicals into the air.

"Well, I'd refer you to about a dozen interviews I've given today, and if you'd like to arrange a conversation you should reach out to our press office," Buttigieg said.

[...]

Aside from asking/taking Ms. Taer's picture, which I thought odd, I think Mr. Buttigieg's response appropriate.

I never thought about how many people were actually shut out of the benefit of the $35/month insulin.  Thank you Martin Shkreli for your business model of jacking up prices.  The FTC is still on his case so it's possible he will be back in prison.  Meanwhile, Whitmer will start insulin manufacturing here in Michigan.  More jobs for Michiganders and less charges for the patients; a twofer.

There should of been a public private partnership for manufacturing generic drugs a long time ago.  Detroit could certainly use the jobs this would bring, if you can keep the local corruption out of it.

Sure. But the GOP members of congress won't support that.  They keep trying to repeal parts of passed legislation that would increase health and pharmacy costs for Americans.

Former President Donald J. Trump's daughter Ivanka and his son-in-law Jared Kushner have been subpoenaed by the special counsel to testify before a federal grand jury about Mr. Trump's efforts to stay in power after he lost the 2020 election and his role in a pro-Trump mob's attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to two people briefed on the matter.

The decision by the special counsel, Jack Smith, to subpoena Ms. Trump and Mr. Kushner underscores how deeply into Mr. Trump's inner circle Mr. Smith is reaching, and is the latest sign that no potential high-level witness is off limits.
