What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

U.K.’s New Leader Lays Out Sweeping Plan to Cap Energy Prices https://nyti.ms/3RETope

Quote

Capping energy rates, however, should take some of the steam out of the inflation rate, which economists had projected could peak anywhere from 13 percent to 22 percent by early next year. Consumer prices rose more than 10 percent in July from a year ago, the fastest pace in four decades. Ms. Truss estimated that the price caps could curb the inflation rate by up to five percentage points.

Ms. Truss has said that she will go ahead with a campaign promise to cut taxes, claiming that it will help lift the economy overall. But some critics said that such a move would only worsen the damage to Britain’s public finances and could exacerbate inflation by stoking more demand in the economy. Ms. Truss has insisted that the government could recoup some of its lost revenue through faster economic growth.

The new conservative PM is going to give that trickle down thinking a run for the money (so to speak). Does it seem like a bad time for them to reduce government revenue?

Trump Pushed Officials to Prosecute His Critics, Ex-U.S. Attorney Says https://nyti.ms/3Qsqt6H

There's a new book out that discusses Trump's efforts and interests in which cases federal prosecutors might pursue.  They tried to have Trump scrubbed from Cohen's charging papers.  Trump doesn't like being the unindicted co-conspirator.

Quote

A copy of Mr. Berman’s book, “Holding the Line,” was obtained by The New York Times before its scheduled publication Tuesday.

The book paints a picture of Justice Department officials motivated by partisan concerns in pursuing investigations or blocking them; in weighing how forthright to be in court filings; and in shopping investigations to other prosecutors’ offices when the Southern District declined to act.

Quote

The book contains accounts of how department officials tried to have allusions to Mr. Trump scrubbed from charging papers for Michael D. Cohen, his former personal lawyer, and how the attorney general later tried to have his conviction reversed. It tells of pressure to pursue Mr. Kerry, who had angered Mr. Trump by attempting to preserve the nuclear deal he had negotiated with Iran.

And in September 2018, Mr. Berman writes, two months before the November midterms, a senior department official called Mr. Berman’s deputy, cited the Southern District’s recent prosecutions of two prominent Trump loyalists, and bluntly asserted that the office, which had been investigating Gregory B. Craig, a powerful Democratic lawyer, should charge him — and should do so before Election Day.

“It’s time for you guys to even things out,” the official said, according to Mr. Berman.

The book comes as Mr. Trump and his supporters have accused the Biden administration and Attorney General Merrick Garland of using the Justice Department as a weapon after a judge authorized FBI agents to search his Florida house for missing classified records. Mr. Trump, who is a likely presidential candidate in 2024, has suggested without evidence that President Biden is playing a role in that investigation.

Quote

"However, Mr. Berman’s book says that during Mr. Trump’s presidency, department officials made “overtly political” demands, choosing targets that would directly further Mr. Trump’s desires for revenge and advantage. Mr. Berman wrote that the pressure was clearly inspired by the president’s openly professed wants."

"Overtly political"

"Desires for revenge and advantage"

"Clearly inspired by the President's openly professed wants"

Meanwhile we can point to Republicans and their voters projecting Trumps attitudes and actions into others.  Trump should be indicted.

Trump’s Post-Election Fund-Raising Comes Under Scrutiny by Justice Dept. https://nyti.ms/3TWEoVg

Quote

A federal grand jury in Washington is examining the formation of — and spending by — a super PAC created by Donald J. Trump after his loss in the 2020 election as he was raising millions of dollars by baselessly asserting that the results had been marred by widespread voting fraud.

According to subpoenas issued by the grand jury, the contents of which were described to The New York Times, the Justice Department is interested in the inner workings of Save America PAC, Mr. Trump’s main fund-raising vehicle after the election. Several similar subpoenas were sent on Wednesday to junior and midlevel aides who worked in the White House and for Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign.

Is it possible that Trump (guilty of treating his charity like a piggy bank) might misuse PAC monies?

Quote

The new subpoenas appeared to have been issued by a different grand jury in Washington than the one that has been gathering evidence about the so-called fake electors plan, which has focused on questions surrounding pro-Trump lawyers like Rudolph W. Giuliani and John Eastman.

At least one of the new subpoenas bore the name of a veteran federal prosecutor in Washington who specializes in fraud cases, suggesting that this avenue of inquiry is devoted primarily to examining the spending and fund-raising at Mr. Trump’s super PAC.

There are so very many fires for team Trump to put out.

I predict that as the weeks progress fewer and fewer people will publicly suggest that it would be terrible precedent to indict a former president while more and more will come forward saying that it would be terrible to not indict simply because of politics.

Politics is not a shield for criminal conduct.

It caught my attention when I turned on my laptop:

The Queen of England is dead at age 96.

(long live the King?)

"Most Americans still believe Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop from hell is an “important” story — nearly two years on from when The Post first broke the news, according to a poll published Tuesday.

Of 1,000 US voters polled by Rasmussen Reports, 63% believe the story of the first son’s abandoned laptop is important and 44% think it’s “very important.”

And it’s truly sobering to be seeing the reactions of the British people up close and personal. I’m currently in the UK myself. King Charles III now has the reins.

Conditions at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Get ‘Worse and Worse and Worse’ https://nyti.ms/3Rx1vV4

Quote

While the reactors themselves are designed to withstand a plane crash, power is needed for essential cooling systems that are much more vulnerable. And since Monday, the plant has been running in what is referred to as island mode, using one “hot” reactor pumping out 140 megawatts of power — less than half its normal generation — to provide energy for essential plant equipment.

Mr. Kotin said that the reactor’s technical specifications do not envision this mode being used for more than an hour.

Quote

On Aug. 25, the plant was completely cut off from external power for the first time in its history, briefly plunging it into blackout and forcing the emergency diesel generators to be switched on. Engineers raced to repair the lower-voltage reserve line and reconnected the plant to the grid 14 hours later.

On Monday, that reserve line was severed again. Mr. Kotin said engineers made the difficult decision to keep one reactor running to supply power to the plant rather than switching immediately to the generators.

Quote

Ukrainian officials fear they could be forced to cycle down the plant’s last running reactor anyway, because it was not designed to work this way indefinitely.

“The continued deterioration of the situation, the prolonged lack of power supply from an external source of electricity will force us to deploy standby diesel generators,” Oleh Korikov, the chairman of the Ukrainian agency responsible for nuclear and radiation safety, said at a news conference.

Shocked me.  I hadn't even turned on the tv yesterday morning.  The last thing I remember was the coverage surrounding swearing in of the new PM.  Went into my patient's room on 2nd shift and saw the Queen was dead on her tv and I froze.  I blurted out "huh we just saw her.."...... Oh I'm sorry, hi my name is ____ and I'm your nurse today LOL. I was shocked, couldn't even focus.

The U.S. military is facing a major crisis in terms of personnel and readiness. The pool of candidates willing and able to don the uniform is actively shrinking; fewer than 30% of Americans between ages 18-24 are even qualified to join the military without a waiver, and the Army, specifically, is roughly 50% behind on its recruiting goal so far this year. So with a shrinking pool of volunteers, the military needs to consider adjusting some outdated entry standards: in particular, those relating to cannabis use.

Potential barriers for applicants are numerous. Things that can prevent a person from joining the military include certain tattoos, physical fitness, medical limitations, criminal records, and a history of drug use. While all military branches have adjusted some entry standards, a significant number of potential recruits are still being kept out because of their past drug use.
