What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Objecting to the COVID vaccination doesn't necessarily indicate lack of sanity or intelligence, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

While this was obviously pushed by the Republicans, if the Democrats hadn't agreed, however reluctantly it might have been, it would not have passed.

As an aside, the military has struggled to meet its recruiting goals with the Marine Corps being the only branch to meet them.  The Navy recently began a trial accepting recruits that previously would not have qualified.  And, over the past year both the Army and Navy had offered enlistment bonuses of $30,000 - $50,000 depending on immediate  or near immediate shipping to recruit training.

It seems they don't have much choice.  From the original source in @Tweety's post:

The House Ethics panel received the matter from the nonpartisan Office of Congressional Ethics in June and said it plans to “announce its course of action” in the next Congress [emphasis added].

[...]

The House Ethics Committee typically has 45 days to review a matter referred to it by the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent entity that initially examines allegations of misconduct against lawmakers and other House employees.

I'm hoping, this won't be round 1 of the investigations **** show that the Reoublicans are planning.

I can't speak for the poster but I would understand her saying that sane people are the ones that take the vaccine and it was a sarcastic pro-vaccine statement.

Also the poster said nothing about political party.  I'm against mandates myself.

Otherwise I agree with you.  I understood the mandate when it was clear that the vaccines were saving lives.  But with this variant I think letting it go is a good idea.  No need to hold up very healthy 18 years olds that don't want the vaccine from joining up when recruitment is an issue.

That's the reason that the organization I work for never required vaccines.  Why lose healthy young staff that are really needed?

On the other hand, my military father had to get a slew of vaccines and boosters, and so did we when he was transferred to Thailand for two years.  I don't think he gave it a second thought.  Mandates aren't a new thing.

The end of a Trump-era border expulsion policy later this month is expected to jack up migrant border crossings by as much as 40%, El Paso, Texas, officials say.

The city is currently ground zero for the border crisis, and El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego said Monday the end of Title 42 on Dec. 21 will only worsen the deluge.

“Once [migrants] see that it’s happening, more people will come in,” he said during a public meeting.

"Embedding reporters and photographers with agents while they patrol the 1,951-mile southern border with Mexico has traditionally allowed us to report on the dramatic rise in migrants from Latin America and other places who try to cross illegally into the US. It offers journalists a firsthand glimpse of the obstacles faced by the federal agency in dealing with the historic flow of migrants, many of them escaping violence, political repression and dire economic disparities in their home countries. This fiscal year, migrant border crossings topped a historic high of 2.76 million people.

I have been embedded with Border Patrol at least half a dozen times over the years. This time, I was told Wednesday by a local US Customs and Border Protection spokesman in Texas, “I have some bad news for you: Washington said no. There’s nothing we can do.”

There's only speculation that it's about the Met Gala tickets.  But she should know rules about accepting gifts.  Getting free tickets is against the rules apparently.  If she's wrong, she's wrong.  And her dress was ugly.

Sort of related, we got an email saying we are only allowed to have pot lucks around the holidays.  We are not allowed to have someone give us any gifts, food, or pay for a party.   Remember back in the day when we would get pens from reps?  Can't do that anymore either.

Chavez is focused on logistics: communications, transportation and coordination between federal agencies and area nonprofits.

"I feel that our agents — as long as we give them the resources and the tools to do the job and balance it out with a consequence delivery that shows their efforts are not being undervalued — we are going to come up on top," she said.

40% surge is a lot when they are already short staffed and beyond capacity.

I'd be interested to see what my friend's friend that lives there says in a few months.  She has said the border situation doesn't affect much of the city and life is pretty normal.

Off topic.  When I was in Costa Rica, our guide said they are having a huge problem because Nicaragua is requiring migrants to pay a fee which many can't afford.  He said most of them are Venezuelan and if they can't pay CR has to find ways of dealing with them, including shipping them back to Venezuela.

Since I didn't imply nor state that doxing is only a tactic of the right wing your statement seems unnecessary... but you do you. What we do know is that it IS a front and center tactic of Trump and his followers.  It's not infrequent or subtle or hidden in anyway most of the time.

History suggests that the new republican House will spend lots of time and money on investigations with the hope that they will damage their political opponents...just think in terms of Benghazi type hearings with different names. In fact, McCarthy has made some promises about partisan investigations.

The big question might be will Republicans shut down the government before they take full control of the House or will they make a sincere attempt at governance and pay their bills?

In your unsourced opinion... nothing new or interesting there. Why not link to the right wing media rhetoric and reporting that has you believing such silliness.

Yes, he tweeted "Our investigations are just getting started.”

I know they've been itching to get after Hunter Biden and his father's connection for a while.

CNN speculates on some others.   If they are fair and just investigations the cards should fall where they may.

This is far from a complete list of the investigations various Republican-led committees will embark on over the next two years. But it does give you a sense of the breadth which they plan to investigate the Biden administration, and how that will complicate efforts to get anything done on a bipartisan basis.

As did I.  When I was in deployable units, once a month during group formations, everyone not current on vaccinations was called out and marched to sick bay.  And in those days everyone was vaccinated.  There were no religious exemptions and very few medical exemptions.

One possibly that is going to come from complication from this is compliance with the status of force agreements with some of the countries where we have service members stationed that require COVID vaccination.
