What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Mr Scott has a history with managing money... right?

Right - not to mention some very shady billing. We’ll never know how much he raked in for himself as CEO of HCA - he pled the fifth something like 75 times while being deposed during the investigation of his company for Medicare fraud.

Are they going to audit his committee?

Russia’s Unfounded Claims of Secret U.S. Bioweapons Linger On and On https://nyti.ms/3D27fSp

The United States secretly manufactured biological weapons in Ukraine. It trained birds to carry pathogens into Russia. It created Covid-19. It operated laboratories in Nigeria that engineered this year’s outbreak of monkeypox.

Of the many falsehoods that the Kremlin has spread since the war in Ukraine began more than six months ago, some of the most outlandish and yet enduring have been those accusing the United States of operating clandestine biological research programs to wreak havoc around the globe.

Over the last 6 years we've heard quite a few Russian lines of propaganda filtering through right wing media.  Has this nonsensical thinking hit our social media content sections yet?

No   From what I see there is widespread support for Ukraine and dismay at the lies.   Admittedly I don't follow right wing nut jobs. Some people though are tiring of the billions we keep sending them for what might be a lost cause and lost lives and property damage

That "lost cause" we are supporting with our money and military resources is democracy.  We either value and support democracy here and abroad or we don't.  When we decide that it's too expensive or uncomfortable or inconvenient to fight against authoritarian rule we will learn what it's like to live in something besides a democracy.  That tyranny is just around the corner for us if we allow the MAGAphiles to decide our political futures.

The Canadian authorities were looking for two “armed and dangerous” suspects after a stabbing spree in an Indigenous community and a nearby village in the province of Saskatchewan left at least 10 dead and 15 others injured on Sunday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Saskatchewan said in a statement that “multiple” victims had been attacked at random in several locations across the James Smith Cree Nation and the village of Weldon.

I'll confess to not knowing much about British politics, but given that they are one of our most important allies and a world power it is something to watch.   Apparently there is a non-public vote to pick the new Prime Minister and the one poised to win doesn't have popular support.

In addition to the war in Ukraine and the fallout of Brexit, the new prime minister will inherit a vast range of economic and political problems, including high energy prices, soaring inflation and a looming recession.

Florida voters voted to allow past convicted felons to vote.  DeSantis didn't like it, so he passed a law requiring them to pay their court costs first, then he went after people that the state registered to vote and then voted.

He's quite pleased with himself.

For a long time, you've heard me say that I don't comprehend the turn Christian Evangelics have taken recently in their embrace of Trump et al when I feel the opposite should be happening.bible.thumb.jpeg.0b1facdaf34d03ed5b8361e2fa3e820a.jpeg

Long, but good opinion piece.

Christians seeking social influence should do so not by joining interest groups that fight for their narrow rights — and certainly not those animated by hatred, fear, phobias, vengeance or violence. Rather, they should seek to be ambassadors of a kingdom of hope, mercy, justice and grace. This is a high calling — and a test that most of us (myself included) are always finding new ways to fail. But it is the revolutionary ideal set by Jesus of Nazareth, who still speaks across the sea of years.

Yeah … one commentator speculated that most, if not all charges would be dismissed because of the way the law was written.

Kind of reminds me of the drug testing for welfare recipients debacle a while back.
