What can I do besides nursing?

Published

I lost my nursing license in 2015 due to school claiming I did not graduate. I had worked for 8 years as a nurse and loved it. And yes I posted things before. I would just like to know if everthing else fails what would be a good medical profession? I pray I will get license back but is has been 3 years. Please no negative commment I have been through heck. My story was on the news 4 so I am not making this up.

I was most programs don't require biology. Let's see I had 6 months to take class or I lost my job. No pressure just working 12 hours and driving 2 hours to class. I was a very good nurse helped a lot of people and held a lot of people who were dying. I passed nclex in 30 minutes 1st try never took biology.

You are correct, most programs do not require General Biology as a course for Nursing. However, in order to take Anatomy and/or Physiology, it is a requirement. I'm a bit older and know, as a fact, in order to take Anatomy, General Biology has been a prerequisite for more than 20 years. It has probably been a prerequisite for more than that.

I'm not sure how you were able to do Anatomy without ever taking a Gen. Bio course. That's the real mystery......

It does sound that perhaps your school is a bit "off" in general. Still, sign up and take a Biology course somewhere at the local community college. This will at least give you a leg up in you ever decide to seek counsel and get reinstatement at some point down the road.

Please speak to an attorney. You completed what was required at that time of licensure. This would be like revoking the ADN I received as BSNs are now required. The course wasn't required when you graduated, you should have been grandfathered in.

Sorry your not correct 3 colleges in this state don't require it. Anatomy and physiology do not require biology 101. When I graduated my college did not require it.

It's been two years!

A) Why havent you tried to take it again?

B) Why didnt you get an attorney?

C) Okay you had six months. So what? Its BIO101. It's silly easy.

Raven43, I guess I need to clarify my comment as I live in tiny, small California. I guess we do things different here. Here, in California, it is a requirement. It seems California is a lot stricter when it comes to graduating nurses. A lot more red-tape.

If only 3 colleges in your state do not require it, the question to ask is how come??? Why do the others require it then? General Biology usually is the first class you have to take (in a good majority of schools/states) whether it's human-related science, soil science, agricultural science, etc...

Besides, taking a Gen Bio class would actually be more helpful than detrimental for anything you choose to do, health-related in the future. The cell is an important part of life, after all.

Instead of pondering that umpteen years ago it wasn't a requirement at your school, just take the class and do the requirement. As a matter of fact, Fall semester starts in a little over a month in most places. Instead of typing on allnurses.com, type away at an online application for a local community college and get it out of the way. At least this way, you have it done and if you choose, you can pursue legal action later.

General Biology = Job = $$$ Think of it this way! More positive!

Sorry your not correct 3 colleges in this state don't require it. Anatomy and physiology do not require biology 101. When I graduated my college did not require it.

You take the time to reply to SOME posts (it seems you only reply to ones relating to how stressful this is (I'm sure it has been very stressful! No one should have to go through this), how you took bio like they asked but failed, and how it wasn't required when you graduated)

  • About the issue not being cleared up, but that you're license just says lapsed
  • What you used to work in (ICU) and how much you loved it, how old you are, and how you hate the idea of going back to school but "it's time to find something else."
  • How this is uncommon and you tell everyone you know to keep copies of everything
  • The nursing director signed the letter of endorsement
  • You're not a troll and you worked as a nurse for 7 yrs and this happened 2 yrs ago and you're still trying to resolve it. You took bio which was not a requirement when you graduated, but failed.
  • You retook bio and failed. You took it online and were under so much stress you did not pass. You were working 7 yrs at your dream job and it was taken away. Bio was not a requirement when you graduated. You owed a balance first and did not fill out the paper.
  • About most programs not requiring bio
  • Why you failed bio 101 (had 6 months to take it, pressure, working 12 hrs and driving 2 hrs to class)
  • How much the fee was you owed the school ($20)
  • Failing bio once not twice
  • How your luck has not been good and you want a backup plan

But that seems all you're willing to answer to.

First - I think where the confusion comes in is that you don't seem to really be answering any questions. It's more as if you are defending yourself. And, rightfully so, no one should have to go through this! This sounds like a horrible ordeal. However, as you said, "How would you feel if you worked 7 yrs at your dream job and had it taken away?" I would feel HORRIBLE. I would fight like h*** to get it back.

You said you only took bio 101 once (when they asked after they said it would now be a requirement even though it wasn't when you graduated). But then, you said "I did RETAKE it and failed the class." So, how did you retake it if you only took it once? They asked you to take bio 101 and you failed. So, have you retaken it since then?

You state that you ARE working hard to become a nurse again. How is that?

This happened 2 yrs ago. What have you been doing in those 2 yrs to get your license back? You haven't responded to anyone asking what you've done so far. So, it was found out that your school messed up - BIG TIME (in my opinion). Of course, they want to put it on you, and say that YOU didn't fill out paperwork and pay a $20 feel. That is ridiculous! They were responsible in making sure that you met your graduation requirements, which you had at the time, and they told the board that, which was why you were able to sit for the NCLEX in the first place. Now, they are saying because you didn't fill out 1 silly little form and pay 1 silly $20 fee that you did NOT technically graduate - a TECHNICALITY. This school should have to pay for what they are doing. They should NOT get away with this. They should be the ones that are having to deal with this and the stress that comes with it. You fulfilled your requirements and that time. The requirements yrs later really shouldn't matter (in my opinion). But, here you are. YOU are the one who has a lapsed license and can't work her dream job, so what are YOU doing about it? It seems like your not doing much of anything.

You are not responding to anyone about if you have sought out legal representation, and if not why. You don't have to say what the lawyer said or give any details, but you could say whether or not you've talked to one and found out what your options are in going forward. Why wouldn't you have talked to a lawyer right away or at least some time in the 2 yrs since this has happened?

You haven't answered anyone's NUMEROUS questions as to whether or not you can retake the class and if you can retake it why you haven't just done it and gotten your license back? Have even talked to the board to see where you can go from here? You took bio 101 as was asked of you, but you failed. Okay, now what? What can you do now to get your license active again? Will they let you retake bio again? If your license is only lapsed, I am sure there are steps you can take to get it back, which I am sure if you are working hard to become a nurse again you would have asked the board this already. Yet, you haven't answered anyone's NUMEROUS questions as to what the board has said about what to do since you took bio 101 and failed.

Honestly, when I first read this post, I felt so sorry for you. No one should have to deal with this. This just is so horrible and I can NOT imagine how stressful it would be. But, this was 2 yrs ago. If you were working your "dream job" for 7 yrs and had it ripped away from you, why does it seem like you haven't done anything to fight for it? As I said before, if this happened to me, I would be fighting like h***. But that's me. Maybe you retook bio, failed, and decided you didn't really want to fight for it. It was more hassle than it was worth. That's okay to. It's YOUR choice. But, you are on here saying that you lost your "dream job" and you are fighting to try to get it back and pray you get your license back, but you don't seem to be doing anything or saying anything you've done to FIGHT for it? So, when I first read this post, I felt so sorry you were going through this. I still feel sorry that you're going through this, but reading through the comments and you seemingly avoiding answering certain questions being asked, makes me think there is more to this story.

All of this!

I thought I read she took Bio twice but then she says she only took it once. What? It's all over the place. Glad it wasn't just me that was confused and noticing only certain questions are answered.

I'm starting to think that perhaps English is not her first language. There are some typos in some of her posts. I could be off base with this notion. I concur with KrCmommy522. She's on this website to gain sympathy but it would be considerate if she would just answer those pertinent questions... demonstrate that she is doing something about getting her life back. ICU nurse not able to CLEP BIO 101 sounds crazy to me (CLEP'ing the course was yet another suggestion not addressed).

LadyT618, I actually did see the video on this story. She is fluent in English. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess she was born and raised in the USA............but this is a guess and I'm basing it on hearing her speak on the TV news video.

CLEPing the class is an excellent idea!!

Oh well, was trying to see why she would mix up her words ("retake" when never took the course before). I'd love to hear from her to see if she thought of doing the CLEP thing. Inquiring minds want to know :)

I did fight the first year it happened called 762 lawyers no one could help. I have someone helping me now but it is a long process. I will know more in a few months. I have no more to the story. I will answer any question I can I have nothing to hide. Eventually you get tired of fighting and I need something to help me so I don't get so depressed if it don't work out. If it was a private college I think it would have been settled. No one wants to go against college or government.
