After reading the thread from the nurse manager, I can honestly say I am discouraged about becoming a nurse...

I am one who has ALWAYS ALWAYS wanted to be a nurse, I have never really had a passion for anything else... kinda sucks to know that there is a good chance that when I graduate I will not get a job... sucks!!!! I have been applying at all the hospitals near me for a PCT position and have no bites.. I use to be a MA about 5 years ago, but clearly doesnt matter.

Oh well, sorry for all the complaining, just had to get it off my chest somehow... Thanks for letting me vent! and if you feel the same, vent away :)

You have to look at it in a positive way, things may change when you graduate and if there are still no jobs when you graduate, home care nurses I find always have jobs available!

keep your head high, you never know how things will go, and if anything you may be that New grad a hospital is looking for.

This person doesn't speak for all nurse managers so I wouldn't worry about it. I read that same thread and I thought it was pretty ridiculous. Don't let someone ruin your dreams of becoming a nurse because of what they claim to be looking for. Where I live, I was told that most of the hospitals are not hiring new grads unless the job posting says it's specifically for new grads.... I found out that was false.

I agree with CRod. That was one nurse manager. I didn't even give it much thought. Every area/hospital/state/etc. is doing something different. No need for you to be discouraged by one thread.

It was one person, and if it's what you've ALWAYS ALWAYS wanted to do, as you stated, then do it. Don't be dissuaded by someone else. I haven't always wanted to be a nurse (at all!), and I'm doing it.

I really take the "new grads can't find a job" thing with a grain of salt now. It could just be people discouraging individuals from pursuing nursing because it's so rampant on this forum, yet on the other nursing forums I visit they don't have so many posts about new RNs not finding jobs.

I think new grads not finding jobs is all about location. Hospitals in my area are actively hiring new grads and running awesome orientation programs for them, but I live in an area with a few major hospitals, plenty of small doctors offices, outpatient clinics, specialty care clinics, etc etc, so there are enough jobs to go around. If you are in an area that's dry on jobs, but you are willing to get a license for another state and relocate, your job search may not be so rough.

Which thread are you referring to?

if you live in CA it couldn't be more accurate, maybe and hopeful not in your area, but here it is the reality

It's happening in NY too. It won't last forever. It happened when I graduated. it was very discouraging, I wanted to go back to school for another major. But I survived.

IMO, the thread was meant to be a reality check and to provide some harsh advice. No one wants to hear the truth. Yes, this all varies from state to state (and I would not advise anyone in the NYC area to go the LPN route, there are no jobs other than nursind home positions here).

I think what you guys (students) need to focus on is getting through nursing school, and croos the bridge when you get to it. IMO, it's like picking out a wedding dress before you have a man to marry. Focus on the here and now. Unless you are graduating this month, it's should not be your main concern. And there is NOTHING you can do about it right now. Remember, you gotta pass NCLEX too.

I agree with everyone else here; this is just one nursing manager speaking so you shouldn't let it take such a huge effect on you. She is just saying it to shock a little reality into the people who think that nursing is a bulletproof, "recessionless" job that everyone makes it out to be.

You need to first focus on actually GETTING through nursing schools because many have very high attrition rates (people who drop out or fail) but once you get your RN, no one can take that away.

Nursing school is hard and stressful enough; don't stress yourself over things that you can't effect or change

Don't be discouraged. I have to agree with everyone else here. That was only the opinion of one person in a specific location. It may or may not be difficult for you to get a job in your area. But there are so many different venues to work in and your dreams are only limited by how far you're willing to go to achieve them. I've met literally dozens of new grads who can't find jobs only because they refuse to apply to anything other than acute care and within a 45 minutes driving distance. Don't be one of them.
