this week has been CALL BELL HELL
Get ready for this one. This happened today... A lady came to the floor (an adult Med-Surg unit), with a very small infant, I'd say app 2-3 months old. She asked for Mrs. X room. I pointed her in the direction, and then proceeded to rell her that only children 12 and up can visit. She PLEADED that she be allowed to visit Mrs. X, because this was her grandchild, and Mrs. X was dying. I allowed, and said, "ok, but take the baby to the room, and don't hang in the halls, or stay too long, as the rules are for the protection of the baby..." (the immune system not being developed, and serious diseases of other patients here). She said she understood, with thanks. ( I am not an ogre). A few minutes later, she came to the desk, and asked for a diaper. I went to the back, and came out with lg adult diapers. She said, no, for the baby. I told her we did not carry that supply, as we have adults only. She said, "well, don't you have a nursery, or a kid unit SOMEWHERE in this hospital????" Meaning for me to go to another unit, and get a diaper for her baby, in whom which is not even allowed on our unit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAHHHHH! I then said nicely, "No, I am not going to another unit to get you a diaper, you will have to leave now." She said, "I am going to call administration, I said, don't bother, I have called them, and security. They will be here in a few minutes. She left. The GALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!
This is my theory regarding call lights.....Call lites should be programmed w/ a q min lockout, just like a PCA. If you are well enough to push a button more than the programmed lockout time, you will have to get out of bed and do what ever it is yourself. You are OBVOUISLY too well to be in a hospital.
i second that motion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ER I work at only allows 1 visitor per pt, and sometimes that's too much. Last month we had a distraught pt brought in by EMS who had just witnessed their spouse having killed themselves. Needless to say the whole ER could hear what this poor person had been through. The rooms have no doors, just curtains and are arranged around the nursing station so it's easy to hear what's happening next door if people are speaking loudly. Anyway a lot of resources were being spent on trying to calm and assist the pt, when the son of another elderly pt came up to ask for a drink of water for their parent. They were told that there was an emergency right now and that it would be a moment. The son replied that his parent was thirsty and that is an emergency. I for one am sick and tired of the bad behavoir of patients and families. If people behaved this way at stores or other places, they would be escored out. People are way too entitled. I feel I am obligated to provide competant and safe care to patients. If I choose to find you a pillow or get you another warm blanket, then it's because I choose to not because this helps in any way to assist in your diagnosis or treatment of whatever brought you in. don't get me wrong, I'm always trying to make my patients feel better but I can't stand obnoxious people and they don't get extra TLC.
One of our residents FINALLY got a private sitter. Now she can make the sitter's life miserable. (honestly, though I feel for her)
Of course, we'll still have to deal with her at night--MY shift. "Oh, I didn't mash the call button...can I have my pain pill?" "I need a drink of water" You know the drill!
I was the triage nurse one day..31 year old male wrote that he was having severe excruciating CHEST pain 10/10..underneath the triage paper he wrote.."CALL MY CELL PHONE DIRECTLY WHEN ITS MY TURN (443XXXXXXXX), IM EITHER AT THE CAFETERIA OR IM TAKING A SMOKE BREAK"
I KID YOU NOT!!!!
OMG!
Hey, that gives me a new thought: Maybe we should hand out those light up coasters like they have at restaurants!
wait, another thought - we should add the gratuity to the bill!:chuckle:yeah::chuckle
(sorry, it's late and I'm getting a little silly)
g'nite :zzzzz
You wouldn't happen to work at the Cleveland Clinic would you? They get Saudi Arabian princes coming in for whatever top of the line treatment. As these people have $$$$$ and no insurance then the Clinic gets paid the big bucks. They will close down an entire floor for ONE Saudi Arabian oil King!!! Plus these pt's give the nurses really expensive gifts! I heard one gave the staff Rolex watches! At my hospital, had a pt demand to leave AMA! But the family member refused to pick him up! I called the On Call MD about this and he said (while laughing), "oh, so this is a hotel now. Make sure you turn his bed down and put a chocolate on his pillow!" Yeah, like the hospital has THAT kind of money!
Have had pt's stay for weeks, such as the one I mentioned in an earlier post, he's still there, the doc switched the antibiotic BACK to IV! So the wife got her way!! His wife has had her mail forwarded to the hospital!!! He's been there over a month now!
Another has his own private caregiver, a very wealthy patient he is, family wants to make sure that the staff is doing our job!!! He's been in the hospital for over 3 weeks!! I mean. come on, this is a hospital, not a respite home for the aged!!!!
Sounds like something similar that happened to me in a rather large hospital in St. Louis. Had a "Saudi Prince" show up for a liver transplant for alcoholic cirrhosis (I thought Islam forbid alcohol ). Took it from a pt. on the waiting list for years; there was quite a scandal about it for some time. Of course, that pt. wasn't able to pay cash for the procedure, plus donate mega-bucks to the Research Foundation. Anyway, an "aide" showed up at my apartment (I was travelling at the time and just filling in on the Transplant team) with a very expensive watch , too, and a request for the kind of car I was interested in! Of course, had to refuse (almost killed me!) and got all kinds of attitude from his "people" because I refused ("as if you are too good to accept a gift") and then had to explain to them that it wasn't kosher (or halal) to accept gifts. Leaves me wondering if the other staff did, since they were so put out that I did:stone. :argue:
Fran...*LMAO* YES...exactly like that!!! *snorts*Here's another one that I ran into today...this one was a REAL winner!
I get a mother on the phone. Her precious baby boy (mind you, "baby" is 23 years old and quite capable of using the phone...*L*) had surgery on his hand (tendon laceration) on 10/21. The doctor told him his ONLY restriction was that he cannot drive, so long as he is on Percoset. So, we write him a note...patient cannot drive so long as he is on narcotics for pain post surgically.
Mom calls me today and says...I need a note for my sons college, stating why he hasn't gone to school. I asked her...well, why hasn't he gone to school? She said, because he cannot drive on narcotics. I asked (tactfully) wasn't there someone available to give him a ride? She said (nastily) NO. She also wanted me "backdate" the note to BEFORE the 21st (pre-surgical) for the days he was having pain. I told her I could not do that because we have no documentation of him being seen prior to the 21st. She said (and I quote here)
"Well, you KNOW he cut his arm open on the 19th!!! You KNOW we went to the emergency room...you KNOW he had his arm casted there until we came to the surgery. Don't you also KNOW he would have pain???"
(Yeah lady...he has pain. YOU, as a mom) :angryfire
Yes ma'am, I understand all of that, however, perhaps it would be better to get that particular note from the ER. I will be happy to write you a note for your son for the 21st forward that he could not drive to school.
Mom is now ******...and puts dad on the phone (like it really matters to me whose angry voice I hear...the answer is still NO! *L*) I explain the same thing to dad, but did at least acquiesce to putting "Patient was having post surgical pain and could not attend classes". I ask dad...is that agreeable to you? He states, yes it is...and when can we pick up the note?
I told him...I will write it now...you can pick it up as soon as you'd like.
He says to me...now get this...
GREAT!!! I will send "Frankie" up there right now to go get the note.
*long pause on my end*
"Um, Sir? The reason we were writing this note is because Frankie is not supposed to be driving, remember???"
Click. Phone went dead in my hand...dad hung up on me.
Can you say "BUSTED????" :rotfl:
Where oh where do these people come from?????
Apparently there STILL isn't enough Chlorine in the Gene Pool!:angryfire
