:angryfire Gotta love em....can't shoot em'....(teehee...kidding):chuckleWhere DO these people come from? I'd like to meet the parents. The "no-common-sense" sub-division of civilization.....another planet?
Had a patients wife ask me if I could put a new colostomy bag on for her...
Mind you, this woman late 60's, perfectly able-bodied. I asked her who does it for her at home, and she says...."well I do, but I thought since I was already here, and you are a nurse trained to do it......" OMFG
Now ain't that the sheeeet for ya.
My instant uncontrolled response was that I was up to my elbows in poo on an hourly basis with patients alone, but thanks for the offer.
And could I run to the cafeteria and get her some dinner, as she didn't want to leave her hubby's bedside....(to transfer to floor that day and probably home tomorrow) Um yeah, if you don't mind watching over my balloon pump/vented guy next door.....and could I rub your feet with lotion when I get back?
W-hack-o.
Where DO these idiotic visitors get their nerve????
H-E-L-L-L-L-O-O-O-O-O!!??
We are not there for them - it would seem any moron would have enough sense to know this. These must be special morons.
Just have to say I really admire you hospital & LTC nurses, and thank you for showing up to care for the patients in spite of all the "merde" you have to put up with. I think you really do have huge hearts to put up with what the patients, families, administration and physicians put on your plate. Thanks for all you do.:balloons:

Ahhhh Crunch....that was so sweet!
Thanks for the atta girls and boys....we never get enough of that!
I don't know what type of nursing you do, but I am sure you could make a list of
your own woes.....
.....so here's a big hooray for you too!!!!:balloons: :)
Actually I have so easy compared to you guys. I am doing research and prior to that did 10 yrs. of office OB/gyn. I may have had some trying days, but nothing like you all deal with. Before I became a nurse I worked in hospitals for 10 years so I do have some vague memories! You all are heroes to me.
Part of our problem here is nurses have a way of doing the impossible everyday and making it 'look' easy to those ignorant to what our job entails.
We tend to put a smile on our face and look unhurried (for our patient's sakes) when our brains are working on overload, we need a brerak but can't get one, etc. People tend to think we 'really do have the time' because we portray that.
Most understand the concept that we're here primarily for our patients, and I remind them of this frequently. I'm NOT here to take family/friends' BP's and counsel them on their health problems in my ICU and no I do NOT have an obligation to turn you into a nurse in 30 minutes. They really don't 'need' to understand all my monitors, etc in ICU...its my job to worry about them. Hold your loved one's hand...reassure them...and let me do my job please.
Can you tell I hate 24 hr visiting...ARGGHH!!!! LOL!!!
Get ready for this one. This happened today... A lady came to the floor (an adult Med-Surg unit), with a very small infant, I'd say app 2-3 months old. She asked for Mrs. X room. I pointed her in the direction, and then proceeded to rell her that only children 12 and up can visit. She PLEADED that she be allowed to visit Mrs. X, because this was her grandchild, and Mrs. X was dying. I allowed, and said, "ok, but take the baby to the room, and don't hang in the halls, or stay too long, as the rules are for the protection of the baby..." (the immune system not being developed, and serious diseases of other patients here). She said she understood, with thanks. ( I am not an ogre). A few minutes later, she came to the desk, and asked for a diaper. I went to the back, and came out with lg adult diapers. She said, no, for the baby. I told her we did not carry that supply, as we have adults only. She said, "well, don't you have a nursery, or a kid unit SOMEWHERE in this hospital????" Meaning for me to go to another unit, and get a diaper for her baby, in whom which is not even allowed on our unit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAHHHHH! I then said nicely, "No, I am not going to another unit to get you a diaper, you will have to leave now." She said, "I am going to call administration, I said, don't bother, I have called them, and security. They will be here in a few minutes. She left. The GALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!
This is my theory regarding call lights.....
Call lites should be programmed w/ a q min lockout, just like a PCA. If you are well enough to push a button more than the programmed lockout time, you will have to get out of bed and do what ever it is yourself. You are OBVOUISLY too well to be in a hospital.
