8 Week A&P 1 with Edukan...what do you think?

Published

I'm thinking about picking up another class for the semester because the ones I'm currently taking aren't very challenging and don't require much outside work. Principles of Chem (less than 1 hr of homework), Yoga (no homework!), Brain and Behavior (no book=no outside work), Sign Language 1 (very little outside work). Edukan offers A&P 1 starting in March and running for 8 weeks. Do you think that's doable? I've already taken an A&P class a couple of years ago that isn't acceptable anywhere, so I feel like it won't be as tough as it would be for some people, but I don't want to get in over my head at the same time.

What do you think?

Also, they say in the syllabus that you should buy the books through eCampus, but do you see any reason why I couldn't buy through Barnes & Noble? They're quite a bit cheaper.

I haven't done anything this week! Guess what I'll be doing this weekend??? :)

1 more week!!!!

Good! I took the test last night and got a B! Just need to finish the labs and post everything.

How about you, Seemik, how's it going? And how about you, Lana?

Only one more week to go!

Yep, I will be at a B after turning in the homework and labs this week! Now I just have to focus on doing well on next week's test so I can hold on to it!! ;)

By the way, what are you guys doing in regards to classes during the 6 weeks we have off before AP2 begins? Are you taking any other courses? I'm going to be reviewing everything from the first half of the course and making sure I've got the vital stuff committed to memory! Also, I will be taking a 5 week course here at the local college. Then I'll have Intermediate Algebra at the same time as AP2 through Edukan.

Lana, doesn't your LPN program start real soon? How exciting! Seemik, are you in a nursing program yet or finishing up pre-reqs?

I'm still sitting at a B, with no way to raise it past that. I'll take a B for this, but I really want an A for AP2! I start my LPN program May 8th!!!!! I am SOOOOO excited! That is what I will be doing before AP2 starts, and am going to work on the ADAM labs so I don't have so many of those to during the actual class. Next week I have a final on Monday and one on Friday, so I'm hoping to get this done early in the week and be done with it and celebrate on Friday. Are you guys taking Micro through Edukan? I'm tentatively enrolled for fall with them, but will see how heavy my workload is with the LPN stuff, because I'm also taking Chem 1 here this fall.

Hey Everyone!

I will also be in the session 3 (Edukan) course this summer with you guys. I have to say, you guys are scaring me about Simmons.. What is his teaching style.. if you have any insight on how he tests, how to study for his exams, etc. I would much appreciate it.. If he is way off, I may just take it locally.. I do like the online format though..

Anyway, look forward to meeting you guys this summer!

Amy

I am also taking A&PII session 3 with Simmons. I agree with Cutienurse2be...you guys are scaring about the teacher. I am also considering taking it on campus now. Melanie

Beats me! If I'd figured out how to study for his tests I'd have an A! :) Just do the reading, homework and My A&P stuff. He doesn't have a "teaching style". Each unit you get outlines for the chapters (which are useless to me - how 'bout ya'll?), have a discussion topic that requires you to submit 1 original response and respond to 2 others (these sometimes take a little outside - usually quick online- research), do the multiple choice/matching questions at the end of each chapter, and do some of the labs on the DVD, which are really easy. The most frustrating thing seems to be the test (if you do the homework and discussion you automatically get all the points for those). You don't get to see what you missed on the tests or know the correct answer. I've had a couple of tests where I could have sword I had everything correct and then hit the submit button only to find out I got a D. For some reason though, the tests seem to be better here at the end. The only thing I worry about in taking the session 3 class is that there will be fewer units because it's only 5 or 6 weeks, which means each test will be more weighted than they have been with 8 weeks. Did I leave anything out girls?

Where did you do A&P1? Welcome to the class!

Hi Amy and Melanie, welcome to our AP group! Sorry if we seem a little negative and bitter, it's just end-of-semester frustration talking. ;)

Lana gave you an accurate rundown about the class...you get full points automatically for submitting the labs (basically, fill-in-the-blanks in the book utilizing the A.D.A.M. software, time consuming but easy) and completing the homework at the end of the chapter (multiple choice, no more than about 15 questions). The exams are the most difficult thing because there is really no way to know what to study...it was my experience that the things you would think should be on the test -- like things pertaining to key facts about the major body systems -- are nowhere to be found. The test seemed to focus on some of the more obscure facts found in the material, the questions seem kind of tricky, for lack of a better word. The tests are 25 questions, both true/false and multiple choice, with only 30 minutes allowed. I think part of the difficulty with the exams is having to worry about finishing on time so it makes it harder to really focus carefully on the questions and selecting the most accurate answer. I also agree with Lana that the last two tests have been much easier than the others, and we were told by a former student that the last one is better as well, which personally saved my hide!

Simmons seems nice enough but he's completely hands-off. The chapter outlines have no useful information; there's more information provided in the chapter summaries in the book than what he gives you. There is no access to the exams after they have been taken so there's no way to no what you missed or why. I think the main thing to remember is that this is a totally self-directed course, so if you're someone who needs interaction and/or feedback from the teacher, you won't find it here! I believe we started out with about 25 students in the class and now we're down to about half of that.

I'm going to end up with a B in the class but it definitely took a lot of work. And now that I know what to expect from Simmons, I have no qualms about taking him again for AP2 -- except, as Lana pointed out, this is a 6-week course during the summer and so the material will get thrown at us even faster than the 8-week course, probably at three chapters a week. If you can stay focused, stay on top of the reading and are not easily discouraged, it is doable. Inspite of Simmons "style", I learned a lot from the material and I'm looking forward to the second half.

Hope this info helps...and I hope that you decide to stay with us this summer. Keep in mind, you can drop the class at the end of the first week with no "W" on your transcript and for a full refund...that would give you one week to see if it works for you.

Keep us posted! If you stay with the class, don't hesitate to check in with us here. I know having the girls to commiserate with helped keep me motivated and sane! :lol2:

ok, so I feel better now ABOUT THE CLASS!! I look forward to meeting you guys in the class. I fractured my hand today so I cant type very well, more later!!

I fractured my hand today so I cant type very well, more later!!

Ooooo....sorry to hear about the hand! I fell on mine a few weeks ago and sprained it pretty bad, but thankfully it wasn't broken. It was just rotten timing - this semester 2 of my classes are yoga and sign language, and I missed 2 weeks of yoga from not being able to put weight on my hand, and was late for a sign language project because I couldn't do some of the signs correctly! Hooray for klutziness!

Hi,

Thanks Lana and NC_RN_2B for the heads up!! I feel a little better now. I didn't know that I could drop in the first week for a full refund. Does it say that on the Edukan site somewhere? I must have missed it. I took A&PI at my local community college. I'll make either a B+ or A- (the final is next week :uhoh3: ). I found out that I was accepted to start nursing school next semester and the advisors there said the more classes (esp A&P and Micro) that I could get done, the better off I would be w/ the nursing courses. That's basically why I am in the class. Don't want to get hammered with everything at once!! I've taken a lot of online classes before, so I kind of know what to expect. Thanks for the advice, Melanie
