i wanna be a nurse but...my math sucks

Published

I want to become a nurse but I'm not really good at math and my written has become really bad. I graduated from high school about 3 years ago. i was suppsed to join the marines..but my parents wanted me to Reserves but i want to join active duty,So out of respected for them i took 1 year off to think about it spend time with family. Then the 2rd year my step dad died in our house right next to my mom and a few other family members....so it was a very rough time for my me and my family. Look i dont wanna give you my life story here my point is the last 3 years has been **** for me, i spent the last 3 years doing nothing but playing video games. I guest it was my way of caping with everything i ended up meeting someone and Experience so many new feels and things i never thought were even posible. so too make a long story short i find that the more new things i experience in life the more i questioned joining the marines...so now i wanna be a nurse. Why??? Because i truly enjoy hoping others thats what makes me happy more then anything in the world, so this spring i plan on enrolling into community college. Im not 100% sure what Type of nurse i wanna be but i im thinking i wanna work in a icu , but im just not sure i have what it takes anymore. I'm not that great in math my written sucks now in fact this is the longst thing i written in a while and I'm afarid i just dont have what it takes to make it into the nursing field. I always done pretty well in anything having to do with science or History... But i guest when you spend 3 year being sad n sitting on the your ass this is what happens. And like i said i wont bore you with all the details but.lifes been a ***** to my family but i learned you cant let every lil thing in life stop you o yea also i have a learning Disability

If you have a learning disability I recommend seeking out a college advisor at the school you are thinking about attending and ask about their resource center for students with learning disabilities.

If if being bad at math were that big of a deal there would be a lot of us that would not be nurses right now... Including myself. ;)

Where there is will there is a way.

Best wishes.

Yes true but my writteing skills are lacking as well now ....im still thinking of joining the marines partime or maybe something else in not 100% sure but always find i always go back to thinking of joining...but still i wanna be a nurse as well.

Wow thats a lot of memebers and yea i plan on retake both math n english class so hoping that will help tks for the tips.

I encourage you to also explore other healthcare professions - in case nursing doesn't work out for you. Many people automatically think "nursing" just because they are unaware of all the other options. HERE is a good site to look at them.

Best of luck to you on your educational pathway

Whenever I get frustrated or feel like I am not going to ever understand or be good at a skill, I always remember this...

Everyone who is an expert at something, was once a beginner at that very same thing.

Even Albert Einstein had to learn that 1+1=2.

So don't give up! Hard work ALWAYS pays off in the end.

Good luck!

I will admit I spent 1 year thinking about it and right away I just say what else can I be other then a nurse??? I enjoy helping ppl so nurse was just kind of like yea lol ....but I wanna try something else as well so I can gain experience...been thinking of trying cnabut ill keep looking around.

Your 100% right about that I guest I just learn better in class and because I had a very had yea ...I just can't really seem to think, I didn't even study for my cna test just want in and expected to past.

I have learning disabilities as well. My writing skills were not that strong before I went to college, but that is why they have what you call "pre-reqs". Many people think these classes you take before nursing school are a waste of time, but in fact they are the building blocks for your foundation. My advice would be to never put yourself down and always strive for the best you can be! Trust me you'll go far with a positive mindset.

Good luck!

Very true that's why I planned on retaken math&English to get back up too speed. Btw I can see your a cna I'm thinking about taken class for cnaas well can you give me any advice about that??? And how long did you take your pre-regs class for?? also if you had to choice from emt or cna which would you pick??? I live in NYC

Any class you are weak in, you can get a tutor or help through the school. Who knows, you may even find math easier now than 3 years ago too. Writing skills are something we all need to work on. My dyslexic son excelled when he was taking classes that he wanted to take and he enjoyed taking.

Also, you don't need to know what area of nursing you want to work in at this time. You will be exposed to many different areas and you may find out during school what you are good at and what you like.

Getting your CNA and working mow can be a confidence booster too. Just remember that the nursing part of things is different than the CNA part of things.

It has taken me almost a year to complete all my pre reqs for nursing, but this varies between schools. Honestly, I am so glad I became a CNA because I get to see so many nurses and work beside them. I have gotten to know exactly what nursing is all about. Definitely go for your CNA because you'll learn so much, and you will know after being one if you really want to be an RN. That is why I chose to follow this path so I knew for sure nursing was my calling! Nursing school is challenging from what I've heard, and it will test you to see how many times you will get up after falling on your face a hundred times. Like everyone is saying make sure you truly want to do this because you don't want to get into this field, and put all the effort in it only to find out it isn't really what you expected.
