Published

I want to become a nurse but I'm not really good at math and my written has become really bad. I graduated from high school about 3 years ago. i was suppsed to join the marines..but my parents wanted me to Reserves but i want to join active duty,So out of respected for them i took 1 year off to think about it spend time with family. Then the 2rd year my step dad died in our house right next to my mom and a few other family members....so it was a very rough time for my me and my family. Look i dont wanna give you my life story here my point is the last 3 years has been **** for me, i spent the last 3 years doing nothing but playing video games. I guest it was my way of caping with everything i ended up meeting someone and Experience so many new feels and things i never thought were even posible. so too make a long story short i find that the more new things i experience in life the more i questioned joining the marines...so now i wanna be a nurse. Why??? Because i truly enjoy hoping others thats what makes me happy more then anything in the world, so this spring i plan on enrolling into community college. Im not 100% sure what Type of nurse i wanna be but i im thinking i wanna work in a icu , but im just not sure i have what it takes anymore. I'm not that great in math my written sucks now in fact this is the longst thing i written in a while and I'm afarid i just dont have what it takes to make it into the nursing field. I always done pretty well in anything having to do with science or History... But i guest when you spend 3 year being sad n sitting on the your ass this is what happens. And like i said i wont bore you with all the details but.lifes been a ***** to my family but i learned you cant let every lil thing in life stop you o yea also i have a learning Disability

Thanks you for the reply I been worried about it a lot...I'm somewhat a shy person...I I'm hoping once in school I can keep at least a 3.0 then I'll be happy. As for not know what area in nursing I wanna work.. all I do know is I truly enjoy helping others so what else but nursing can I do??? A cop, fire man maybe??? I was told because I have a very kind heart and I'm afraid of losing someone while I'm a nurse that I should work in a icu.

I've struggled with math as well, not so much writing. I have been out of high school for about 6 years now (wow, hadn't thought about that!) and have finally decided to go after my dream of becoming a RN. I went to my community college to talk to someone about what all it takes as far as pre-reqs and am currently brushing up on my math to take the required placement exams. I thought I was horrible at math, but after committing myself to study for a couple hours a day or so, it's starting to slowly come back! If you really want something, you will work for it!

I guess what I forgot to mention is go to your school or where ever it is you're wanting to attend, and they will surely have resources to get you started! I went to tutoring for math at my school, and was SO nervous, but everyone was so welcoming and helpful!!

Best of luck!

Thats one of my main problems right there i can never seen to focus when i'm alone. Ill be honest the most i have ever study was 2 hour for 2 days then done. when i was in high school my math was never really bad or my writeing but when you spend 3 years playing video games this is what happens. i know if i can get in school then lll be ok since i learn better in class then by myself. but maybe tutoring would be fun i'm not really use to studying.

Yeah, you're probably going to have to put the video games aside for a while. If you really want to do this, or any career for that matter, you're going to have to be disciplined and dedicated. I was able to sign up for one on one tutoring, so I could ask any questions I needed right when I thought of them. And I also learn better in a classroom setting rather than on my own, which is why online classes are out of the question for me.

Yes i argee i gotta put my ganes to the side for awhile i most just watch Netflix now but my plan is to her into the habit ir studying 1 hour every sinlge day. So you were lucky enough to her 1 on 1 tutoring is this from a student or teacher???? Yes same here online studying is out of the question for me unless its hisory or sceai which i love learning about Science.

Lol how did her n it her in their?? Too her into the habit of studying 1 hour a day

I looked at some paperwork my advisor gave me and found some study tools as well as a link to the tutoring page for the school. On it I found you could reserve an appointment for one on one tutoring with a professor in whatever subject you need it. They also have peer led study groups, and one on one student tutoring. It's a really great service. You will have to ask the advisor at the school you are wanting to go to.

Specializes in ICU.

First step is to go into a college and talk to an advisor. I agree, that you are not so hot with the writing skills. I don't know about your math skills as I have never seen those. I hope they are somewhat better than the written skills. Look into a community college. They may have you take an Accuplacer or Compass test to see what you would test into in college. I had to take some remedial algebra classes before I could get to college level math. They also have remedial English classes. Community Colleges are more interested in having their students succeed. They offer more resources for math and English help than a 4-year college does.

Once you get all of your prereqs in, you can apply to a nursing program. I see you are in NYC. That is a difficult area and I would check into what your chances would be of finding a job once you graduate. Look at different hospital websites and research the job postings. See how many their are and what kind of degree they require. Most hospitals in that area may require you to have a BSN, if that's the case you will have to look at 4-year schools.

You will have to take some kind of entrance exam that will test you on your math, science, reading, and writing skills. This test tells the nursing program whether you need more remediation in the areas before you can attend nursing school. You have to be competent in the basics. Do well in your prereqs which means putting away the video games and limiting Netflix. Prepare yourself to study hard over the next few years.

There will be lots of dosage calculations. On my last test, there were many 4 and 5 step problems. It's a matter of being able to break down the information, get rid of the information not needed, do some conversions, and multiply and divide. It's not mega hard math, but it can be lengthy, and it can be confusing. They are very strict on their math there is, and it is on every test. Every test must be 10% math. It's important because a wrong dosage can kill someone. It's why it is drilled into our heads from day one.

As a PP stated, there are many, many jobs in the healthcare field. Take some time and research what you would really like to do. You are young, you have tons of time, so explore and pick the correct career for you. See what the job market looks like in your area. If you decide to go into nursing, be prepared to study, study, study.

Wow that sounds really good

Lol way to let a guy down easy like i said i have been out of school for 3 years and have a disability. Anyway out here in nyc you can work as a rn with out your bsn but with in 24 months you most be inrolled for some Type of school to her your bsn. My plan is to work as a rn while attending a nursing school that does rn to bsn in 1 year its a fast track Type of thing. And yea sadly you are right i gotta study study study but i learn 100% better in class then at home or online do studying is out of the question for me. So i plan on just focus in school like i always do n join after school study groups.. the problem with math is its just very boring to me even more so when im learning things i want need but i plan on keeping at least a 3.0 in college which i know i can do if i put Mt mind too it.

You'll learn that you need to set aside everything, and just study. I learned this just last week when took my first anatomy test. When I got back my grade it was a 62... And from there on I have started to study really hard. Atleast three hours a day or until I understand the subject I am learning about...
