Walking from school at night with deer and no street lamps?

Published

One of my classes is from 4:30pm to 7:20pm. I live in a very woodsy town with a lot of deers roaming around, plus there's barely any lit places at night (not enough street lights) so it can get dark to the point you can't see.

My home is just 2.5miles (50 min by walking and 5 min by car) from my college and I will probably have to walk home every Wensday unless the teacher let us out early since it's a 3 hour class. The last bus is always at 7:22, so that gives me about 2 min to try to make the bus, but if not I have to walk home. :banghead: I should've just did the dorms.

But I'm planning on asking my teacher to let me out at 7:18pm instead 7:20pm but there's no guarantee. I can't rely on a cab because sometimes they just don't show up at all and then won't inform you that their not coming.

My brother tells me I could do it because he has been hitchhiking and backpacking across Europe by himself, but I'm still nervous about the whole situation.

Does anyone have any words of encouragement for me or how to best deal with the situation? I'm hoping that I don't have to drop the class because I need it on my application by the time I apply to the nursing program, but it looks like I have no other option. :(

You're more likely to get run over by a (drunk/impaired/distracted) driver than attacked by a deer.

If I might put the deers problem into perspective for a moment.....

And yes, I know it's not mooses. Obviously it's meese.

I applaud your sensibility in being aware of the subversive nature of the nefarious trouble-makers of the Cervidae family, AKA They Who Must Not Be Named.

To protect yourself from these dastardly deer, I recommend the following:

- Deer are excellent swimmers. If you decide after a long arduous day of class that you would like to take a nighttime swim in the local watering hole, please be aware that you will not be able to outswim a deer - so this is probably a terrible idea. They're like sharks, but with fluffier tails.

- Deer are terrific jumpers. Do not try to climb a tree in order to get away from them, as they can jump up to heights of 10,000 feet on a bad day.

- The Chinese water deer have large upper canine teeth. With this in mind, I would recommend not taking an alternate route home, say, through China.

- Deer like to have you think that they eat leaves, grass, fruit, et al. Do not believe this, as their diet mainly consists of man-flesh, the tears of the vanquished, and the occasional stray nursing student.

Ways to combat these fearsome creatures of the dark:

- Watch old Chuck Norris films, in particularly pay attention to his roundhouse kick and fists of fury.

- Buy a pet mountain lion and let him loose in the wooded area to eat all the deer.

- Conjure up a patronus to walk you home from class. Bonus points if you can call up a scary bunny.

- Offer the deer a beer.

- Pack up and move (this should be your last resort).

All seriousness aside, I agree with others here in saying you should be concerned about walking home by yourself in the dark due to humans. I would catch a ride with a classmate if you miss the bus; or if you walk home, bring pepper spray and make sure your phone is always charged. Good luck!

As some other posters said, you can just leave class at 7:10 or 7:15. 5-10 minutes really won't make a difference. You can let the teacher know that on wednesdays you have to leave 5 minutes early to catch the bus because you have no ride home. I'm sure he/she will understand. If not, just leave anyway. It's not like they can hold you hostage. Just be discreet when you leave and sit by the door.

While I understand being afraid of wild animals, deer are pretty harmless as long as you don't hit them going 50 MPH on a motorcycle or in a car. I'd be more concerned about the ticks deer tend to host than the deer themselves.

Be careful if you have to walk home and if you want, you can get a can of pepper spray and a flashlight as others have mentioned. They make little cans that can go on your key ring. It will be effective against both deer and humans ;).

Excuse me if someone mentioned this already, as I have not read all 6 pages of this thread, but my friend took a self defense class and she told me that they taught the students to put your keys jagged side out between you knuckles wolverine style. That way if god forbid you are confronted by a wild animal or malevolent human you can use the keys as a weapon.

Two minutes (7:18 vs 7:20) isn't going to make a bit of difference. My hometown is in rural WI. Deer dart out into the road when they get spooked, such as by a car. Not very smart, but hey. Otherwise they cross the street at a leisurely pace. They do, however, total cars. One totaled mine driving hone from a 3-11 CNA shift, one totaled my grandma's car. I even had an ICU pt from a deer vs motorcycle collision last year.

They're much safer than hitchhiking though -- don't give that option another thought!

Many, many years ago, I sheared off a telephone pole with my parents' Volvo station wagon. That did not total the car.

A few years later, my mother hit a deer. That totaled the car.

OMG God bless your heart. You have some obstacles, how long is this class for? a month? a semester?

also even if the other students don't live near you I'm sure you can offer them money to give you a ride home since you say it's only a 5 min drive. You know money talks. I always pay people to do something for me because I hate struggling. I've driven for years but pay for other things I may need like when I move etc.

Don't drop the class unless there is an earlier class you can take, also see if the teacher can let you out by 715 because of your situation , she or he should work around on that unless their a jerk.

I'm giving good advice and hope this works out for you

Stay strong.

OP I'm so sorry there's plenty of jerks on this page giving you horrible advice. I mean they are judging you about you being afraid of deers, hell I wouldn't be around them either, These people need to understand that everyone comes from different parts of the country and not used to certain things.

Heck I would be afraid of them too so I don't blame you, ignore these jerks because instead of telling you how to fix your situation here they are criticizing about how you shouldn't be afraid of deer and how you should be afraid of people.

Like who are they to say that? That's not what you asked so people stick to the topic and offer help ONLY if you have it, DON'T criticize her simply because she may not feel comfortable walking 50 min around wildlife, I wouldn't either and NOTHING wrong with that!

Buy a second had bike, put a light on the front that flashes, a bell etc. Take a self defense class.

Yep, once again I wrote and deleted three responses because I don't feel like getting my hand slapped.

Problem is, OP WAS given some very good advise, and there are only so many times something can be said before people get bored and restless.

We also can get silly. Being silly doesn't make us jerks (not nice to name call, by the way). We just collectively have a slightly warped sense of humor.

It's not "deers" it's "deer".

I'm surprised so many educated people don't know the plural form of "deer" is also "deer".

I only graduated from high school and I know it.
