Published

Well I put up a good fight but I give in I am going to quite ! I am not going to recount all the details but due it all hit the fan today :crying2: Two weeks or so ago I was in an car wreck on the my way to work I hurt my shoulder and ended up with disks pressing on my spinel cord causing me to lose some felling in my hands and legs .

I work on the 2nd floor and my office has no elevator so yesterday after almost killing my self on the step trying to more or less craw up them at this point it I had had anuff and told my boss it was hard for me to walk up the steps . today I was called down to HR and told that they where going to fire me today for messing up ( due to a medical problem I have control of ) but because they "love me" they are going to give me a job down stairs :yeah: sounds good right ? the problem is I have to take a pay cut ,I am also being made to work 40 hours when I olney work 32 now and I have to be there at 7:00 am (i have no ride at this time ) I also am NOT soppiest to lift anything heavy ,use my bad arm ,or stand up for to long ! I am in quite a lot of pain and the idea of having to be up for 8plus hours a day is killing me . they also told me I was in bad standing and would never be rehired ? and they cut off my health care with 4 days notes  thank god I have medicare as a backup .

well thats my vent ,please not cracks on the spelling today :)I always said I would go back to school if I lost my job but how in the world am i going to do that now ??

I know you can't be getting Medicaid and SSDI and working as a nurse at the same time. Your SSDI and Medicaid should have been history when you went to work as a nurse and don't be surprised that's the decision when the system catches up with your activities. As far as I'm concerned, you're disqualified from benefits since you're already on Social Security's benefit system, dude. Get real! You either get benifits under SSDI and do NOT work or work and sacrifice your SSDI!

1) The OP is NOT a nurse.

2) People on SSDI are allowed (and even encouraged) to work. http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10095.html

SSI is disability too. It's for the poor and those that didn't put enough work time into Social Security to collect SSDI. They are both disability. Anyway, you're really pushing the tax payer to demand SSDI, Medicare, AND a job with Benefits. You're on the border there and I think you're crossing a line, personally. I think greed is the order of the day in consideration of claiming double benefits and paychecks. I can't believe the taxpayer tolerates you doing that. They shouldn't have too!

People on SSDI and work have their benefits reduced if their income goes over a (comparatively low) cap.

People on Medicare who are able to obtain private insurance are encouraged (by the system) to do so, Medicare becomes secondary.

The entire system is set up so that a disabled person is able (and encouraged) to reduce their 'burden' on the system.

I know!:lol2:

Truly not wanting to make fun of OP and recognize that eyesight is an issue, but I just cannot figure out what "coriander" should have been!

Coordinator....she PM'd me.

I do orders for the VA and gov. and mil. and more or less 90 % of the stuff on a base but I do not work at a VA hospital (all though come to think of it I may be able to put in A call or two to some of my contacts ) think more of sub contract .

I can not get FMLA tell dec. at least . and they will not give me LWOP what is EEO ?

I'm assuming you've been working via the Ticket to Work program.

You should have a vocational rehab person assigned to you, I would contact them about the recent issues with your employer. I'd almost bet they (your employer) got some sort of perk or points on their government contract due to hiring people in the Ticket to Work program.

That's pretty cold-hearted. How is a cut in pay and a change of working hours "accommodating"?

It's not (accommodating).

If the situation the OP describes is even close to accurate her employer is violating the ADA. Esme posted an excellent overview of an employers obligations under the ADA in this post. https://allnurses.com/emergency-nursing/nurse-with-disability-621045.html I hope the OP is able to find someone to help her navigate the system and file a complaint. As I said (above), I'm willing to bet her employer got some sort of perk on their government contract due to employing Trekkfan (and others with disabilities).

Wow! You are very cold hearted! Where is your compassion and this for a fellow coworker! I don't get these unkind comments from fellow nurses, isn't compassion supposed to be one of the qualities of a good nurse?

Never mind nurse compassion. How about just a fellow traveler having compassion? The OP sounds half dead.

Sorry, she just sounds really badly off and she is playing right into her boss' hands by quitting and by not getting a lawyer to jump on the boss' head and go "cock a doodle do" (to quote from a great movie I once saw).

I hope the poster you quoted gets a taste of real life soon so her eyes will open.

Fine I'll take in the attitude. However, I've collected unemployment from the West Coast to the East Coast and have a good idea what I'm talking about so...

i had plan to stay tell they fired me for just that reasion but i am now told i would not be able to get unemployment due to the fact i get ssdi. So taking that into acount quiting seems better then being fired on a new job app.

As for the health benefits they tell me it has to do with a contract they signed with the heath care compunty and having to work so many hours i have worked there 5 years and have had my benefits cut off and given back to me maney times i have lost count . I turned in one set of doctors note and was sent home . I was told i have to bring in custom notes from the surgen i have no idea wwhat help it will be

get a lawyer. Now. Stop typing and wasting time going on about it on the board here. Get a lawyer. Get a lawyer. That's a workers' comp lawyer. Do it. do it now.

Quite the resume' , eh?

I'm getting the feeling that the car accident and related injuries were not documented or reported to HR as a reason to put you on light duty.

I'm just not sure why you didn't address the problem right away...I would have presented the documentation from your dr telling of your work limitations and asking to be moved to the first floor due to the fact you can't walk the stairs. I cannot believe that the VA doesn't have an elevator though...that's crazy. Talk about discriminatory toward the disabled..and at the VA!!!!

Anyway...I just get the feeling that you have been letting this all happen to you rather than take charge and make your needs known. they can't help you if you don't tell them what you need. I do agree that the healthcare issue needs addressed...I wouldn't quit either but I would talk to someone further up the HR chain to get some answers...after you have all your documentation i a row.

They don't want to help her. They want to either have her work and quit complaining or fire her. Plain and simple. That's the hard, bitter truth.

Being legally blind, it's not always easy for Trek to see the computer screen well.... it's not always in someone's control. :)

Don't they make special systems for blind folks? Being at the VA, she could probably find out how to get something to help.

what is EEO ?

EEO is the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which is the agency that enforces Federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination.

Here is their page about disability discrimination.

I have posted here when i was in a very bad place and it was the middle of the night. I sounded like a total nut case. Probably because I am a total nut case, but I function well on the job and it is a problem that can be covered up. I am fortunate to have recieved very kind responses and some good ideas. Trek I hope you can take what you need from the posts here and leave the rest. I have a friend who has been blind since birth (prematurity, long stint on O2, retinal damage) She is a musician and I met her when I was a camp counseler at age 18. Living with her for 3 months was an education. She was very willing to answer all my questions and considered herself differently abled. She deals daily with more roadblocks and frustrations than I do in a month. The getting a ride thing is big. Buses do not always run on time esp in bad weather, may pass you by if full, and take double the time to get anywhere. Everyone here who is single and has no back-up has had to take a cab to work at sometime or other. Cost me 50 bucks the last time I had to do that. I'm lucky, it hurts my budget, but I still get to eat and pay my bills. Wish I had some advice, just see that you are struggling and could use some emotional support. Best wishes. (prayer won't fix things, but it helps me.)
