VCU ABSN Summer 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Hello everyone!

I know it's somewhat early to start a topic, but the threads from the previous years have been extremely helpful to look through. Especially seeing the stats of the previous students who have been accepted.

I am currently a student at VCU who will be graduating in May, and I am majoring in Health Science. My current GPA is 3.45. I have completed all of the pre-requisites except Anatomy and Physiology, which I am currently taking at a community college. I am about to finish part 1 of A&P with an A. I am a little worried about this course because I took Anatomy at VCU and didn't finish with the grade I liked, so I am retaking it now. I was wondering if anyone knew if retaking a class could seriously impact a decision?

I have a pretty average SAT score. (I was thinking about taking the GRE in hopes of getting a high score and submitting those instead of the SAT, but I'm not sure if I should?) I have volunteer experience at the ER at MCV, and plenty of volunteer experience outside of the health field. I have also participated in several clubs. I have a CNA license, and I worked as a CNA for about a year before entering college.

I am also applying to Bon Secours, but I am researching other programs as well. I am hoping to hear from former and current students and any advice about the application process!

Hi all! I am sorry I am so late in my response. I had no idea this page existed, but I am so glad it does! I received my email of acceptance this morning at 8:01. I am so happy and cannot wait to start classes! To all still waiting to hear back on a decision, don't give up! Keep the faith! Best of luck to all of you! Can't wait to see you all in May

vcu17, Yeah a lot of people do end up working as care partners or doulas! As for summer being the hardest semester, I can't say that it turned out that way for me. The summer semester is busy, but the classes are very manageable. It just depends on who you ask!

Is it your understanding, as well, that we have to meet with our advisor BEFORE we accept our offer?

I'm in the same boat guys. Trying to hold on to the dwindling thread that everything happens for a reason. And asheeng, I'm so sorry to hear about dad, my condolences.

@v777, I applied to Jefferson College as well, but it's very expensive. Right now I'm just hoping that I get pulled.

Has any put any thought into the second degree traditional program ?

Has any put any thought into the second degree traditional program ?

I have. Although I'd prefer the accelerated program, I think I would do the traditional program if accepted. Did you get in to any program?

I got wait listed to the accelerated program and the second degree traditional program begins next spring so I'm going to apply to that and just do that one if I get in.

Same as well! It seems as though they typically pull 25-30 people off the waitlist each year, so hopefully that continues. Either way I'd be happy to get into either of the programs at VCU, it's such a great school.

I believe that there were people from my cohort who were waitlisted at around #18 and did get pulled. For me, the second summer semester may have been the most difficult. For our cohort, the second summer semester was crammed into just 8 weeks worth of time, based on recommendations from the previous class. I believe that we had to complete 90 hours of clinical for Adults II and around 90 for Leadership. However, our leadership professor realized that the number of hours was not as feasible given the abbreviated time frame and ended up allowing us to cut down the hours a bit. It may have been more difficult for me because I had an evening clinical for Adults II. I did not leave the hospital until midnight and did not arrive home until about 12:30 AM. I had lecture the next morning at 9 AM, which proved to be a bit of a struggle for me. Again, I will do my very best to answer any questions that you guys might have. Congrats and best of luck to all on the waitlist! :)

Thanks so much! Will it be difficult to get a decent schedule if pulled off the waitlist late? Also, do you recommend purchasing textbooks? I've heard different opinions on this.

Hey vcu17,

I believe that for the first semester you will have the same lecture schedule as your peers. The only thing that will differ will be your clinical section. Unfortunately, students have no control over their own schedules and are randomly placed into clinical sections. Perhaps this is good news though, as being pulled off of the waitlist late will not have any impact on your schedule. As far as textbooks, I bought all of them the first semester. I do remember thinking that the assessment book was helpful. However, after the first semester, I was able to find most of the textbooks online in PDF format. I only bought two other books during the program; the patho/pharm book and the critical care text for Adults II. I suppose that it depends on your personal learning preferences.
