Hello everyone!
I know it's somewhat early to start a topic, but the threads from the previous years have been extremely helpful to look through. Especially seeing the stats of the previous students who have been accepted.
I am currently a student at VCU who will be graduating in May, and I am majoring in Health Science. My current GPA is 3.45. I have completed all of the pre-requisites except Anatomy and Physiology, which I am currently taking at a community college. I am about to finish part 1 of A&P with an A. I am a little worried about this course because I took Anatomy at VCU and didn't finish with the grade I liked, so I am retaking it now. I was wondering if anyone knew if retaking a class could seriously impact a decision?
I have a pretty average SAT score. (I was thinking about taking the GRE in hopes of getting a high score and submitting those instead of the SAT, but I'm not sure if I should?) I have volunteer experience at the ER at MCV, and plenty of volunteer experience outside of the health field. I have also participated in several clubs. I have a CNA license, and I worked as a CNA for about a year before entering college.
I am also applying to Bon Secours, but I am researching other programs as well. I am hoping to hear from former and current students and any advice about the application process!
Hey Alyssa!
I recently graduated JMU and was accepted into the program in December, as well! I am looking into the living situation and primarily looking on the vcu off-campus housing site for roommate/apartment listings. It is a little early to actually lock anything down but I am just browsing for now. I am, however, looking for a place within walking distance from the nursing/mcv campus.
I hope I helped a little!
Ashley
Regarding housing- most students live in apartments in the city. VCU has a pretty good bus network so some neighborhoods that are popular include Shockoe Bottom, Church Hill, the Fan, the Museum district and Scott's addition. There's a great Facebook page called VCU Housing, Sublets, & Roommates that has numerous listings everyday. Many apartments will become available in May when the rest of VCU graduates and it's good to start looking in March or so once people give their notice. Some apartment complexes that are popular include Cedar Broad, Canal Lofts, and bunch of ones from Legend Property group. If you live farther away from campus you can drive into the city and park at the 8th Street parking deck, which is two blocks over from the school of nursing.
Hello everyone!
I just wanted to offer myself up to try and help answer any questions any of you may have regarding anything about the ABSN program, nursing, or Richmond in general!
I'm a part of the graduating December 2017 class (my first degree was biological anthropology from JMU '16) and I remember exactly how I was feeling when I was applying.
Besides that, best of luck to everyone!
Hey anbrennan09 and richmondliving,
Most of my friends and peers lived quite close to campus and it seemed to work very well for them. I was a bit of weirdo in that I lived (and live) out in Short Pump, VA. My commute to VCU SON was approximately 30 minutes or so, but factoring in the time to park and walk to the nursing school I would say approximately 37-40 minutes total. If going straight to clinical at the hospital, I always left my apartment at least 45 minutes prior to my scheduled shift. Granted, I was always pushing it a bit.
Hey @vcu17! I was #8 on the waitlist and got the email yesterday. I think they pulled 9 people from the waitlist the first round because the email I received had 8 other people included in it. We got the email at 7:30 yesterday morning and we have to submit our deposit by February 17 if that gives you any indication of when the next round will be pulled!

Hey guys! I was accepted in December and I cannot wait to meet you all. I am currently a student at James Madison University studying health sciences. I was wondering if anyone knows about the living situation? Like do most students live walking distance to MCV or do they commute? I'm very unfamiliar with Richmond and trying to look for places to live but not getting very far...
Thanks!
Alyssa
