VCU ABSN Summer 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Hello everyone!

I know it's somewhat early to start a topic, but the threads from the previous years have been extremely helpful to look through. Especially seeing the stats of the previous students who have been accepted.

I am currently a student at VCU who will be graduating in May, and I am majoring in Health Science. My current GPA is 3.45. I have completed all of the pre-requisites except Anatomy and Physiology, which I am currently taking at a community college. I am about to finish part 1 of A&P with an A. I am a little worried about this course because I took Anatomy at VCU and didn't finish with the grade I liked, so I am retaking it now. I was wondering if anyone knew if retaking a class could seriously impact a decision?

I have a pretty average SAT score. (I was thinking about taking the GRE in hopes of getting a high score and submitting those instead of the SAT, but I'm not sure if I should?) I have volunteer experience at the ER at MCV, and plenty of volunteer experience outside of the health field. I have also participated in several clubs. I have a CNA license, and I worked as a CNA for about a year before entering college.

I am also applying to Bon Secours, but I am researching other programs as well. I am hoping to hear from former and current students and any advice about the application process!

Thanks so much! It's nice to know people are starting to get pulled! Congratulations!!!

Thank you @vcu17!! Hopefully you get pulled next round! :)

You should feel excited! I just got notified I'm #6. The past few years they've pulled around 25 people! And looking at the previous threads, they do pull a few rounds. The first round of people just got pulled, and the second usually doesn't get pulled until about a month later (don't quote me on that though). Don't stress, I am confident we'll here back soon :)

Hi everyone! I have a B.A. in Psychology (3.7 GPA) from CNU and am a certified professional coder through the AAPC. I have worked for a year as a coder and received A's in all of my preparation classes relevant to coding. I am on the verge of applying for the ABSN program, hoping to start during the Fall 2017 semester. Does this program take applicants who are wanting to start in the Fall? I was confused about that... The application itself does not give me the option to select any semester other than Spring 2018. Does anyone know about this?

@coder24, you sound like an awesome candidate! The ABSN program is summer entry. Fall entry is just for the traditional program. Spring 2018 is for the second degree traditional program!

To anyone who who is currently in the accelerated nursing program -- I am curious about when/if people are still getting pulled from the waitlist. I know that in threads from previous years, there were students in the program who had information or knew ahead of time if people were getting pulled. If anyone has any information, please share :)

Hopefully we hear something soon. I just find it hard to believe that they haven't had any open spaces yet. I would like to find out before next month so I can have time to find a place to stay.

@marie1995 I know! I emailed the SON on the 27th of February to see if there had been any movement or if we would be notified soon, and they said there has been no further movement on the waitlist :( I've been looking through the old threads though, and number 19 on one thread didn't find out until April 27th. I was originally number 18, so I'm starting to expect I'll ~hopefully~ hear back around then, even though that's really late.

Where have you been looking to stay? I have no idea what I'll do for living arrangements if I get notified that late. Did you apply anywhere else?

@vcu17 Wow, that makes me even more nervous. I went to VCU for my first two years of undergrad so I'm pretty familiar with the area. I'm considering living in the fan. My friend who is doing her graduate program at VCU is looking for places now, so I'm hoping she'll find a place. This way if I get pulled, she'll already have a place for us and we'll split the rent. I've applied to GMU, Marymount, and a couple of schools in Florida. I really want to stay in state and I love VCU so much and I would love to go back because of how short the program is, how quick it starts, and the cost is cheaper. I hope we'll hear back soon!

@marie1995 That's great you have a plan for living arrangements! My boyfriend just told me today that he's moving back to Richmond, so that's one thing less I would have to worry about as I would be able to live with him. Have you heard back from other schools? I applied to GMU as well but VCU is my top choice for sure, have you put any thought into the 2nd degree traditional program?

Has anyone else emailed the SON to see the status of the waitlist? I'm getting very anxious as the weeks pass by í ½í¹ I've emailed them twice since January about it and they've been very helpful/informative, but I didn't want to do it again within such a short period of time... lol

If any waitlisters are still following this, check your emails! I was just accepted this morning!!!

Congrats to everyone on getting into the program! Me and two other girls in the program just rented a house in Church Hill and are looking for a froth roommate. We are super close to the nursing building, rent is super cheap, and we are all super cool. If anyone is interested, please let me know! Thanks and congrats again!
