I noticed there was not a thread created for Vanderbilt pre-specialty nursing for 2021, so I created one. Is anyone already preparing for this upcoming application cycle?
Thank you guys! I was joking with my friends about my answer...
"I am single and child free. I am prepared to lead a pathetic life and study my *** off."
If any current cohort students are still around this thread, I'd be really interested to hear more about how you are matched to clinical sites during the specialty year. I'm going for midwifery where you spend Spring semester at a site w/in 4 hours of Nashville, and Summer/fall each placed potentially anywhere in the country. It also states everyone will have *at least* one placement outside Nashville.
I know Vandy finds the sites for you, but do they consider your personal constraints in making the placements? I have school-aged kids which makes it all really complicated because I can't easily shuffle them around mid-school year. Do they perhaps minimize non-Nashville placements to just one for students with these types of constraints? I could make multiple distant placements work if I absolutely have to, but it would be infinitely easier on my family if, for example, I had one non-Nashville placement during the Summer term, or if in the fall I was placed in my previous hometown where I intend to return post-graduation. (Absent having kids in school I think it's great they expose you to a diverse range of clinical sites and I would welcome the opportunity to travel a bit and see very different care settings).
Coming up with a response to
"Describe how your personal qualities and personal and/or professional experiences have contributed to your academic success. Explain how they will contribute to your success in our rigorous graduate nursing program and a career in nursing. Include challenges or obstacles you have overcome."
has been very difficult for me. Which question did you stumble over?
I approached those questions by thinking about which personal and professional experiences and traits I wanted to highlight about me and after some reflection, I was able to see which question each of those aspects about me seemed to fit into. I answered the more obvious ones first, and that helped me to see the overall picture I was painting. I did the Statement of Purpose last and used the other essays as a warm up for the larger one.
I am incredibly late to the gate with the application process, only changing my mind to go for it a few weeks ago instead of waiting for next year. My application questions are poor, but complete. I can't decide if it would benefit me more to apply after the priority deadline allowing for more time to edit/rewrite or submit what I have before the cutoff and hope for the best?

Hey there!(:
If you already feel like they are poor than I would take the extra couple of days or weeks to prepare after the deadline. It is awesome that you have decided to apply this year instead of next!
Remember, it is the quality of your application that counts.

I said similar things as stated above and also mentioned that my husband is very supportive and will be taking over full-time parenting, and I’d be relocating to Nashville by myself if accepted allowing me to focus solely on the program.
